Pocono On Monday: Take Two

Rain has delayed the Sprint Cup Series race from Pocono, PA until Monday at noon ET. SPEED will provide the pre-race show with a one hour version of RaceDay at 11AM.

John Roberts will host for SPEED with Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace alongside. Wendy Venturini and Hermie Sadler are the reporters.

ESPN finds itself in a very interesting position. The Tech Garage is closed and Tim Brewer is in Bristol, CT for the Monday NASCAR Now program. Also, the Infield Pit Studio is vacant. Allen Bestwick, Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty are also back in Connecticut for the studio show.

This leaves Jerry Punch alone with his analysts Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Down on pit road will be Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Vince Welch. This is a very different dynamic than ESPN usually has in place, so the coverage will also be different.

Usually on Monday things are a little bit more relaxed as everyone is really concentrating on getting the race done and moving on. Punch actually had some fun on the Sunday coverage and lead the group in telling some great stories. Hopefully, that relaxed attitude will carry over to coverage of the live race.

This is a long grind at a track that does not lend itself to TV. Without an aggressive approach to the directing, Pocono can become something that drives the viewer to the remote control. It will be up to the ESPN director to keep the pictures interesting and the producer to make sure the stories are told.

This post will serve to host your comments on RaceDay on SPEED and the live race coverage on ESPN. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

The camera shots kill the excitement of the restarts. No matter how many times it is called a DFR SOS, the camera work kills it for us.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Going in-car during a big restart with cars all over the place is insane.

Anonymous said...

@Holmes - you are so very right

@Sophia glad you didn't get the flavor coffees they are awful. Cheap imitation flavors. rather make my own at home

Now we get up close on 48 & commercials.

Video is even more useless as the race progresses.

The Loose Wheel said...

Going in car before turn 2 on a restart is insane. wide shot of the FS on a restart, then go back to the wideshot for the first lap after the restart. its not rocket science. Today they actually HAVE fanned out on these restarts and the action is furious and intense. ESPN keeps missing it and only has replays. Cryin' shame

Charlie said...

I know, lets have roof cam going on the lead car so we can see how he does for the first lap during this restart.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Horrible....lost....angry....ridiculous..

Holmes said...

At 2:21, bevo said...

"We need to organize a raid on the production truck and smash the damned board for the in-car cameras"

Where is Tonya Harding's boyfriend when you need him:-)

Martin Vincent said...

That was a better job of showing the restart (except maybe for that shot of the #7 and the #12).

Charlie said...

Now that was better.

TexasRaceLady said...

I can't believe it --

we didn't have an in-car camera for that restart! Off with the director's head.

The Loose Wheel said...

There really wasn't a point in showing the 12 and 7. The 9 and the 11 had a battle, and there is alot more going on in the middle of the pack that still got missed

Daly Planet Editor said...

ROFL..I think they read my Tweet for no in-cars on restarts....too funny.

Patrick said...

Another caution. #7 involved. trying to hard to get back at the other guy?

Holmes said...

Those people in the ESPN promos must be the production crew for the NASCAR races:-)

Jo

I saw a Tweet last night that McCafe Mocha fancy deal tasted like "chocolate cough syrup" from a local food blogger :) So I stay basic, no sugar and add sweetener

@Bevo

I would LOVE to see somebody take a bat and clear out the truck of in car cams as well.

I am hearing SUCH CLOSE CALLS ON MRN. Dang it, wish we could SEE IT on TV. L(

JD I know NASCAR needs ratings but the singular fact of BAD Camera work truly needs addressing. It really does. :(

Wish we all had MRN for ALL races. This house is thinking of scaling back on digital boxes in another month or so after VS & F1 is ovaer. NASCAR no longer worth watching the extraneus shows or the races. Sad times

First time we no longer care about tv

Andrew said...

I just got my cable fixed for *this*? No excitement in the broadcast, cautions called without emotion, passing barely noticed by the announcers or the cameramen? Bad, bad, bad.

Martin Vincent said...

Gordon and Stremme might provide the most excitement we've seen all day, not that you could tell by listening to Jerry Punch.

Anonymous said...

From Dot: What happened to Marcos?

The Loose Wheel said...

TONS of excitement over the PA...Sad.

The Loose Wheel said...

Caution before last Marcos pitted for tires. Was dropping back before he came in.

Andrew said...

@Anon 3:24 - It looked like he had a bad restart.

Patrick said...

How did they not see Robby's infraction under the yellow? Aren't they there? at the track? with a window facing the track?
wha...?

Holmes said...

Jerry said 'luck dog'.

I didn't think 'lucky dog' was in ESPNs stylebook.

NorCalFan said...

Would have been nice if Shannon would have asked Chad what the problem was with the #48. Asking too much I guess.

Andrew said...

Ugh. The bumpers are back?

Steve L. said...

I just turned off the TV, can't stand it any longer. WAY TOO MANY IN CAR SHOTS for me. I don't need to see in- car shots on every pass and I especially don't want them on restarts.

JP's voice is like fingernails scrapping on a chalk board! I can't take it!

I'll watch the rest on the radio.

Patrick said...

NCF, its pretty obvious chad didn't want to reveal what the prob was. maybe he told her not to ask prior to the on-air interview. ???

Andrew said...

@Patrick - I couldn't tell if he was making a comment on it being a phantom call from NASCAR, shoddy ESPN camera work, or if they really all missed it.

The Loose Wheel said...

Johnson probably had an issue with the carb dumping fuel and it fouled out a plug or two. Doing both changes cured the problem or perhaps it was a plug wire that may have been grounding out.

Shannon probably just did a Shannon and spaced out asking what happened.

Anonymous said...

Thanks David.

Think JJ will get back on the lead lap? One more caution to go.

Dot

Holmes said...

At least she didn't ask Chad how he felt about it.

Anonymous said...

Wow. With the amazing amount of different pit strategies and little passing on the race track, you could not have scripted a better situation to expose the bare cluelessness of Jerry Punch.

Gonna be a fun ending here boys. #9 first car with new tires of any sort and plenty of 2 tire takers there to screen out the cream of the crop in this tough-to-pass environment.

NorCalFan said...

@Patrick
If so, it ended up as a useless interview? I learn more listening to in-car radio.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yes Dotty I do. Championship teams come up big in big spots and they are showing what they are made of today. Odds are with 30 laps to go and the way the restarts have been, someone else is bound to wreck before its over. We're due for an Epic Scott Speed Failure or a Mikey engine meltdown.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Never even noticed Junior. Punch must have been looking at the monitor.

Holmes said...

jone1981, you are nominated to replace JP in the booth! Good assessment.

The Loose Wheel said...

Its a shame even without listening on the radio I can see this has been a GREAT race. And even worse knowing ESPN dropped the ball incredibly here.

Daly Planet Editor said...

jone, they have never been able to reference the different pit strategies in the entire event.

Just bad coverage at the basic level. I feel bad for DJ and Andy. Don't you wonder what they say to each other privately after an event like this is over?

Sophia said...

I really feel sorry for those with NO MRN access for the end of this race.
Even IF you had a good booth you would NOT know what is going or nor will you "SEE the race on tv"

in car cams on DFR!!#%!^#%!^#%

Anonymous said...

@ David, you are much too young to call me by my real name :). But, you are probably right. Chad & JJ are the best at coming back after adversity.

Holmes said...

Anon 3:38: best remark of the day!

Andrew said...

Why on earth would you switch to KyBu's in-car camera when he's careening across the track?

Anonymous said...

Funny thing I noticed while watching here at work. The cautions have lasted 5 laps each. Is this by design?

Dot

Sophia said...

MARCOS and REUT crash

Sophia said...

^%#!!&#^!&^

Sorry dot

Charlie said...

Will they not learn, don't do tight shots.

The Loose Wheel said...

Lol, did not know that was your real name.

Ummmm Reuty and Marcos involved in wreck. 11 got into back of 00 and got him out of shape, 00 got into Marcos...Marcos is probably done.

Holmes said...

Hamlin to the penalty box. If it is good enough for 7 it is good enough for 11.

Anonymous said...

^$($&, @*$^&*, #()$&*%^, $*#^#(.!!!!! DANG IT DANG IT DANG IT.

Now I know what to watch for.

Dottie (don't call me that).

The Loose Wheel said...

Holmes, different situations. The 7 retaliated as did the 12. Denny was racing hard late.

It sucks for Reut and Marcos but I don't think thats a penalty for Denny

The Loose Wheel said...

Sorry Dot. Lesson learned.

Martin Vincent said...

Jerry just said "if you're enjoying this, and we gotta believe you are"... He was getting excited because a graphic was about to come on the screen for him to promote.

Anonymous said...

@ David, Well JJ's back on the lead lap. There you go.

Dot

The Loose Wheel said...

JJ back on the lead lap...

Holmes said...

David, I realize that, but I think Hamlin was doing more than just hard racing, too.

Anonymous said...

This is the reason I hate the lucky dog. A guy needs to race his way back into contention and not have it given to him. I can't count the number of times I've seen drivers who were a lap or two behind, but then they're given the lucky dog and come back to win.

BTW, what's all the talk of great pit strategy for Montoya. He was LUCKY that they got a yellow. This was not great strategy by the crew chief

The Loose Wheel said...

If Montoya wins today, he still wouldnt have a win on an oval ;)

darbar said...

Hi Everyone. I agree. I can't stand the lucky dog. If you can't race to a win, they should not give it go you. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would think Nascar set this up for Montoya to apologize for the speeding penalty last week.

Holmes said...

There went the last MWR car.

Sophia said...

Mikey again in a wreck and others! CRAP..multi car ..Labonte, Joey, Reed S :-(

Daly Planet Editor said...

Just freaking ridiculous...these guys are lost.

Sophia said...

WOW. that stinks for everybody but it was 4 or 5 wide and JPM had to drop way back..felt crash coming...intense on radio level!!

The Loose Wheel said...

Hard hit for B-Lab indeed.

Big wreck right there

Sophia said...

Labonte NOT HAPPY...looking for somebody...having to be escorted to the ambulance

darbar said...

Bobby is not too happy and I don't blame him.

Sheesh, these booth guys just stink, plain and simple. They are making up excitement just for the heck of it.

The Loose Wheel said...

Man, Juan has REALLY matured since he first started in NASCAR.

Charlie said...

At least the replays are showing us the race.

darbar said...

David, Juan finally took a sip from the Nascar "make the Chase" Kool Aid. He understands you have to points race and not race hard. And that's one of the reasons I can't stand the Chase. As much as I don't like him, at least Kyle Busch races to win every week and doesn't points race like the rest of them do.

Patrick said...

#47 back in the race

darbar said...

Well, DUH. Of course Bobby got taken out by the 6. How did they not see that from the beginning?

MikeC said...

Poor JP.....dead silence, and then "Clint Bowyer is in the lead".....yes, Jerry, we know that, you just said that a minute ago.

The Loose Wheel said...

I think there is more about the sponsor staying with Ganassi then anyone is talking. Target probably said "make the chase or we walk"

Anonymous said...

@ Patrick, thanks for the good news, 47 back in. XOXO

Dot

MikeC said...

Kyle picked up a lot of those spots from 30th to 19th because of that caution!

Patrick said...

Dot, maybe I missed it, but I haven't heard them say it yet. He'll probably only get a couple more positions though

darbar said...

I think we need to start calling these guys "Reporters of the Obvious". I'm starting to think that they call these races, not for the real Nascar fan, but for the first time watchers. They are always saying the obvious like "Kyle is trying to salvage his race". No kidding.

OK, I'm taking my deep breath just like JP, aka Mr Excitement, said.

NorCalFan said...

In response to earlier questions, during the caution had time to do some research on the meaning of the "PDX" on the #11. From FedEx racing website:

FedEx Express Portland “Along for the Ride" at Pocono
In recognition of the Portland (Ore.) market’s outstanding commitment to safety and superior customer service, the #11 FedEx Express Camry will feature ‘PDX” on the wing caps during the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 this weekend.

Jr and J Gordon bumped together but sorted it out.

Charlie said...

If they had auditions for a PxP announcer, would Jerry Punch win.

Sophia said...

crap jr back to mid 20s!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Getting tons of email about how bad this race is, guess lots of folks found a TV at work.

MikeC said...

Wow.....lots of silence....and you can guarantee when there's seconds of silence, it's going to be DJ and Petree that'll chime in and share calling the action.

Patrick said...

Sophia, Jr. quiet on the radio, but I think when the 39 put him in the wall he bent something in the rearend and took away what little handling he had

Holmes said...

let's not blame pocono for the bad race...this is squarely on ESPN's shoulders.

Sophia said...

JD Marty could not save this race with the HORRID cam work.Nother in car ^$%#^!

MikeC said...

The way I'd describe this broadcast, DJ is the play by play guy, Petree is the analyst, and Punch is the statistician....it feels like to me DJ has called the majority of this race.

Sophia said...

I really wanted JPM to win darn it

rich said...

MikeC, you hit the nail on the head.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well folks, it looks like we are in for another very long season of ESPN.

In two weeks, ESPN will be doing the MIS Nationwide Series race with no play by play announcer.

That may be an audition for Dale Jarrett to take over the PXP role for next season. You heard it here first.

JD

Sophia said...

Aw, did not know Denny lost his grandma! congrats Denny

Congrats JPM for 2nd place.

Stupind bowling heads gotta go.

ALONG with worst camera work.

Holmes said...

They just couldn't stay with the finish line shot until all the cars crossed, could they.

MikeC said...

Nice to see them showing the cars crossing the finish line, but would rather seen them stay with the pit lane lower level camera they were using to show the cars crossing.

The Loose Wheel said...

Gotta say Pocono impressed me this season. Great racing both times.

Sophia said...

No OFFENSE but great booth is minutia when you can't SEE the race on tv due to over abundance of CAR CAMS.

The End.

Kasey K and JPM having talks on PRN and JPM saying don't worry about it as KK tried to help JPM. such a mature JPM. Love this guy

Holmes said...

I didn't hear much evidence that we had a play-by-play guy today.

The Loose Wheel said...

WOW! JPM THREW ESPN RIGHT UNDER THE BUS!

Sophia said...

WOW. JPM CALLING OUT ESPN and shaking head saying you guys get it wrong. KK was trying to apologize not start something.

Just wow.

Anonymous said...

not for nothin' but plenty of championships were won on 'points racing' long before the Chase. The only way to change it is to give more points for winning. Personally, I didn't think there was anything wrong with the old system except for that.

Daly Planet Editor said...

How funny is that with JPM? roflmao

Charlie said...

Now JPM knows why Dale Jr. and Tony don't like Espn pit reports.

The Loose Wheel said...

YOU GO JUAN!!! TELL IT LIKE IT IS!

Man, this is cool for Denny. Been a long last year and ahalf. Hopefully this gets something good going for them.

Sophia said...

Aw, poor Denny...I am having emotional day anyway and that has me going....too bittersweet! :(

The camera choices were stunningly terrible.

bspn managed to completely ignore racing in any way shape or form. In car shots during restarts, bumper cams roof cams used in place of wide shots.

Disgusted by espn the worldwide leader ...in wth is happening.

Thank heavens for MRN & their coverage, thru the fields & reporters reporting - except that chick.

I ask myself - why did I rush thru my job, rush thru traffic to get home for this? I get MRN in the car

Congrats to the 11 team, Denny is just toast. I feel happy yet sad for him.

rich said...

JPM is my hero.

TexasRaceLady said...

I wanted to reach out and slap someone for that attempt to create trouble for KK and JPM.

The Loose Wheel said...

Like KK said, good think JPM is one of the best in the world because he should have been wrecked there in T1.

Wish TNT was covering this race instead. Just amazing action on the track, man those folks that went back got their money's worth!

The Loose Wheel said...

Good thing* Dont have a laptop excuse lol

glenc1 said...

I am SO not a fan of the arrogant JPM, but it's always good when someone calls out ESPN for shoddy reporting. I guess I have to give him some kudos today (I probably won't see that on Sportcenter, though, eh?)

Holmes said...

JPM said: you guys always take things the wrong way. I am very impressed with you. (Pats him on the shoulder, laughs, turns and walks away.)

Sophia said...

INDEED! somebody get a youtube of JPM throwing ESPN UNDER the bus.

I heard the REAL STORY and JPM's demeanor on MRN..he was not upset at all..KK was apologizing and a few seconds later ESPN called it a fight?

WOW.

NASCAR TPTB should mandate that all major cities carry MRN on one station for races or make available online!!

The dichotomy of opposing "interpretations" was astounding isn't it?

Sophia said...

WOW, is ESPN off the air???? already.(sarcasm) Glad I have MRN on..but I guess it is a short race day.

Wow, that was a rough ending. Nice to see Danny get some time but those were lame questions.

I just have to say that girl from Sprint, with the rediculous smile on her face after the race, was totally stupid. Here we have Denny Hamlin, very emotional from winning the race and after his grandmother's death, and she's standing there looking like a total fool with her constant silly smile on her face. She should have gotten out of the way and let Denny have his moment. I know she represents Sprint, but that happy silly smile was way out of line, imho.

I haven't read anything here yet, but from what I saw today (about the last 75 laps) it seemed to be a pretty good effort from ESPN this week.

Of course, it was the best Pocono race in years too. ;)

Labbie said...

Wow, after reading thru the posts, I guess I really wasn't paying attention to the race.

The Loose Wheel said...

Spencer on VL...boy SPEED has to do something with him. At least the overly opinionated Robin Miller actually has a clue what he is talking about at times...

Kenny Wallace seems to be doing a good job though.

Labbie, ESPN blew it big time today but I still thought it was an awesome race!

JD, and update on TWIN?

Slater said...

From the pit reporters, besides pissing off JPM. "This is a tough place to have a tough day" huh? And after the booth guys going on and on about Jr's handling problems we get "I talked to Jr's crew chief, he said their cars have to start getting better, some of that is happening today". Genius.

Sophia said...

David I missed the first part of VL. what did JImmy Say

labbie you must NOT have been paying attention (multi tasking were you?) Tv was MADDENING..I turn to MRN and for an hour was away from tv and the rest of the time, TV on MUTE and in and out of the room with MRN blasting thru the stereo.

ESPN stank to high heavens with camera work. Nary a lap without in car cams/roof cams/bumper cams so much, it was nauseating

The Loose Wheel said...

Said David Ragan needs glasses and that something needs to change with that #07 because it just isn't working.

Did hear some on the radio during lunch in the car, different race entirely from what I watched on TV so far.
