Live Blogging Nationwide Series From Gateway (7PM ET on ESPN2)

It's been a long, hot day in the Greater St. Louis area. The heat is on and the afternoon Camping World Truck Series race is over. Now, the Nationwide Series gets on the track to complete the day with qualifying and the race.

ESPN will show qualifying at 4:30PM, the pre-race at 7PM and the race coverage at 8PM. Dave Burns will lead the announce team of Rusty Wallace and Ricky Craven. On pit road will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Shannon Spake and Mike Massaro.

While there might not be a Kyle Busch this weekend, there are still some Sprint Cup Series cross-over drivers that will challenge the field. Nationwide driver Brad Coleman will be the ESPN in-race reporter.

The action is fast at Gateway and much of it takes place on the wide backstretch. Tight shots are impossible as the flat track does not offer a lot of grip and slipping and sliding is often the order of the day. The pit road is narrow with a wall on the outside and the race out of this area may indeed provide most of the passing.

Burns said that the opportunity for him to call a NASCAR race on ESPN was something he really wanted to try. Well, there is no bigger stage than national TV.

This post will host your comments about the telecast from Gateway on ESPN2. To add your comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

Dave Burns has been a great announcer for quite a while and certainly deserves his shot in the booth. I am sure he will bring a refreshing edge to the broadcasts and keep the motormouth Wallace and Craven in check. Burns is a pro announcer and that is what is needed rather than some old time drivers that have axes to grind on the air.
I really need Race Buddy as I cancelled cable for internet TV (Hulu, Netflick) and will miss the race tonight. Bummer!

Dave Burns did an OK job on Q's with Rusty & Ricky with his natural gift of gab ......My only gripe in the past has been that Dave tried to impress e'body with his limited set-up & mechanical knowledge (which often fell short,so much so that CC's would trick him into misleading info at times,as a jest) I haven't noticed it nearly as much recently & he does a better job nowadays .... He is already better in the booth than Adam Alexander ....He's a nice guy , I wish him the best .....

Dave in OKC said...

EXCELLENT feature on Justin Allgaier! Please, can we see more of these involving the NNS regulars?

Martin Vincent said...

@Anon 5:55 - I noticed the mentions of the S&P teams during qualifying, instead of the regular "he has a fast car, he was fast in practice"...

The announcers may have a hard time keeping track of the S&P teams tonight. Counting Morgan Shepherd's deal which can't be predicted just yet, I came up with 13 teams that will most likely S&P tonight.

09, 21, 26, 27, 36, 37, 43, 49, 56, 89, 90, 91 and 92.

Let's hope this isn't what the series is going to look like if they make new rules to keep the Cup drivers away.

Daly Planet Editor said...

13? Holy cow...

Vicky D said...

I like Mike Massaro on pitroad and the booth seems to be doing a super pre-race show.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, if you watched the qualifying show, Rusty kept saying which cars only made one lap runs in practice.

Not the script Nascar wanted.

i dont think 27 is S&P and maybe Johnny Sauter is not a start and park, but the others except the 09 are a lock imo.

Anonymous said...

Do you know if ESPN's top motorsports crew is here in St. Louis or with Marty and the Indycars this weekend?

Martin Vincent said...

@Ryan - Just saw the interview with Kelly Bires, so the #27 is probably just a maybe.

#36 Sauter is most likely a S&P.

#09 Cassill could be a maybe, but I'm leaning toward S&P.

Anonymous said...

MV, the #21 & #27 will race tonight. Still a load of bull to see McDowell & Clements go home, when they could be racing. Instead we get the #90 & #91 pulling their usual garbage.

Martin Vincent said...

Anthem is decent, but what's with the guitar?

Vicky D said...

Anthem singer is a little flat!

Anonymous said...

Dismal crowd - gotta think Gateway may not support two races this year - OR NEXT.

Martin Vincent said...

Nationwide sweepstakes codeword is BLEEDERVALVE?... Is that what cost Travis Kvapil 150 points at Pocono?

The Loose Wheel said...

MV, there are many different types of bleedervalves lol

Great pre-race. Love Craven in the booth!

Martin Vincent said...

@Buschseries61 - If you're right, that still puts us at 11 S&P tonight.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I think Rusty Wallace looks a little off-balance with Craven.

Two drivers in the booth is not usually the best deal.

Dave in OKC said...

Rusty in the booth and all three Wallaces have in-car cams tonight. This must be St. Louis.

Anonymous said...

Hey guys . . . . Andy Petree was a tire changer, even did it some while owning the cup team.

Daly Planet Editor said...

bobpockrass: For those wondering, Gateway track bleachers seat approximately 54,000.

And the estimated crowd is ??

Lucky if they have 20,000

Patrick said...

2 laps to 1st S&P. 49-M.Green. Sad.

Anonymous said...

This pair of drivers in the booth is interesting because they had very different levels of success in their driving careers.

Martin Vincent said...

@Patrick - 9 cars went straight to the tail of the field prior to the green flag, all of them included in my S&P prediction.

Patrick said...

3 laps for 2nd S&P (92-Setzer)
4 laps 36-Sauter
6 laps 89-Chapman

The Loose Wheel said...

Craven > Rusty IMO

Anonymous said...

Rusty comes from the same mold as DW. He is too hyper and a little over the top. He also has a conflict with his two race teams competing.

Also - how did he get off with a mere handslap and apology for his on air comment last week?

The Loose Wheel said...

And BTW, 2 drivers has worked in the booth before. Parsons and Ned Jarrett being a perfect example

Patrick said...

MV, any of the non-qualifiers want to race?

Anonymous said...

David . . . I know you didn't start the string, but Kyle and Wally both drivers too.

Anonymous said...

The Legends Race is great - car spins, faces the wrong way and no caution is thrown. Great stuff !

Daly Planet Editor said...

Has Burns mentioned the S&P cars?

Martin Vincent said...

@Patrick - Lawson probably would have parked, but Cope, Clements and McDowell would have likely all run the distance.

Anonymous said...

Don't think so JD

RWar24 said...

Daly Planet Editor said...

@RyanMcGeeESPN: Whoa...apparently there's a car show in the @GatewayRaceway garage tonight. Holy start & parks!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Couple of tracks on the sched for 2010 went bye-bye.

Anonymous said...

David Ragan qualified for the Legends Million - I bet those guys will be gunning for him. Imagine that - a Sprint Cup driver doing a friggin Legends race !

Martin Vincent said...

@Anon 8:29 - Yes, Nationwide is going back to Gateway on October 23 and it's the first time they'll go twice in a season.

Anonymous said...

I can't see this track supporting two stand alone events. May go bye bye like Memphis track did. Nice unique track but from a pure business standpoint it doesn't look good.

Vicky D said...

Glad Dave mentioned the S&P's too.

Daly Planet Editor said...

From what I understand, Ragan came from the Legends series, has been doing the TV commercials for the event and was encouraged by the promoter to participate.

Nothing like driving against 12 yr. olds in something you did waaaay back when.

Anonymous said...

So if Ragan wins it - Bruton has "a deal" with him?

Anonymous said...

Is Childress bankrolling Morgan Shepherd in the #21 ?

Anonymous said...

Rusty just talked over Craven. Anyone got the muzzle?

panwal johnson said...

Rusty Wallace seems to have a memorized little snippet that he repeats about all drivers every single time they are featured. I guess he gets away with it because he has different combos of partners everytime in the booth. He's also the most annoyingly, flagrant shill, (Ok, well besides Michael Waltrip), for sponsors on TV.

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 838 - The deal with Shepherd originally: Shepherd would run his own car with a #21 in the races the #21 had no sponsorship. This would keep RCR in the top 30 in owner points. NASCAR shot this down and basically said Shepherd simply couldn't run the number on his car and get the points. The car had to be from RCR.

Anonymous said...

FOX refuses to listen to the concensus of the fans about DW and put him out to pasture.

Doubt they will listen to us and take any action about Rusty.

Panwal Johnson said...

So, is Jerry Punch truly personal friends with Brad Keselowski, or is he just trying to appear more in the know through his unprofessional nickname games he's pulling with him and other drivers?

RWar24 said...

Speaking of sponsors, what's the point of putting an in-car camera in car when they're going to put up a wall of sponsors in front of it to the extent that you can see the action in front.. Shameless.

Patrick said...

35 should get 'Kaboom!' as a sponsor

Vicky D said...

After that exploding brake there ought to be debris all over the track right now!

Martin Vincent said...

@Patrick - Those bursts of flame looked kinda cool, if there wasn't any debris to bring out that caution, there is now!

Anonymous said...

anon 8:32-- @DNewtonespn @graygaulding on racing @david_ragan in Legend million: "u know how much publicity I'd get if I took him out?"

Craven made a strong point about brakes in the pre-race show that is already being borne out. He made a similar point about aggressive driving before the Nashville broadcast in April.

This guy is just plain smart, hence his value as an analyst.

Rusty goes back to the Infield Pit Studio after this race for the duration of the season.

It's going to be Marty Reid, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree down the stretch this season for both Cup and NNS on ESPN.

Newracefan said...

This Legends gig is GREAT !

Anonymous said...

Once again, if ESPN doesn't think the race is important enough to send their top team to cover the race (even though they only have to work 36 to 38 weeks a year - heaven forbid), there is no reason for me to invest myself in the race emotionally, since it is obviously not important.

I honestly don't understand why ESPN shuffles their talent so much - they get no sense of continuity or anything with the Nationwide series and it makes it more of a joke when NASCAR's "partner" could care less about the series.

Disgusting.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon,

It's not disgusting, it's logistics.

ESPN's TV package is different than the other TV partners.

They do all the NNS race and the final 17 Cup races.

All the on-air talent do contracts in advance for a select number of races. This is the B team because it is a B team weekend.

It has been this was since 2007. What ESPN is doing with Burns and Welch is trying to find a third person who can work in the booth other than Reid or Bestwick.

I personally hope ESPN develops a NNS team that is different from the Cup guys. That series needs an identity, especially down the stretch.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anonymous said...

drivers always say you race people like they race you...frankly, I'm not a fan of either, but I don't get how what Carl did is all that different than what Brad has done to others. Pot, kettle, black, and this is what NASCAR wanted.

That was just wrong, and it's going to bite Carl in the ass down the line. Guaranteed. Brads dad was really trying to not just blow up.
On a good note, loved Dave Burns in the booth! Good job!

Anonymous said...

You've never been allowed to just flat out wreck someone to pass them, even after they nudge you.

And i've gotta agree with what Rusty is saying (which almost never happens) this is NOT "Boys Have At It". This isn't racing, after 30+ years of following racing from short tracks up i've only a couple times seen a win stand after something so obvious. Carl STILL had the lead coming off turn 2, after brad got into him in turn 1 he gave him room to gather it up. I'll start to believe NASCAR is rigged if they DON'T penalize Edwards, wrecking Brad is no way to make for a close championship race. I was really surprised they even let Carl go to victory lane. Before boys have at it that would have been a win for Reed and his career rejuvenated.

Getting really hard to think of Carl as the "Nice Guy" he portrays when he's literally tried to injure brad twice with absolutely no respect or remorse this year. And supposedly after the last time his sponsors came down hard on him (guess that was just for show)

I cannot believe that NASCAR would let Edwards get away with blatantly taking BraKes out AND admitting it on TV! As a member of the NASCAR Fan Council, you can be certain my thoughts will be awaiting their action on Monday morning. The MUST take points at least and do more than double-secret probation! Next time he is going to kill someone! I don't blame Bob Keselowski for being angry. Edwards HAS tried to kill his son twice and it has to stop!

A Sarcastic Writer said...

Good Job ESPN! Brad Keselowski is wrecked by Carl Edwards again and suddenly at 11:00, it's time for drag racing at Sears Point! With SPEED Channel providing no coverage, some NASCAR fans are puzzled that no post race coverage is provided about the crash but a couple of replays, post-race interview with Carl Edwards admitting he wrecked Brad Keselowski, an interview with Bob Keselowski, and Rusty Wallace mentioning how much trouble Carl Edwards is in. It will be exciting to know we get to deal with ESPN for the next 17 weeks of the Sprint Cup Series.

Anonymous said...

I find it strange that ESPN chose to interview the father instead of BK at the end of the race. His comments were interesting to hear and understandable, but I think it's another case of parents interfering with their kid's racing. Brad isn't 17, this is his 2nd or 3rd year running Nationwide races.

ESPN probably didn't interview BK since they needed to get to drag racing on time. I hope there's an interview on The Speed Report, NASCAR Now, or maybe even SportsCenter (that's a long shot, I know).

Personally, I think NASCAR will probably leave the whole incident alone. They need something like this to generate TV ratings.

Dave Burns had a steller play-by-play review. Some of the best play-by-play commentating I've heard all year came from him on restarts. I think he talked fast and tried to reach non-existent cutoffs, but he's used to that from working pit road for the last 10 years+. He'll get better at that with more experience.

Rusty Wallace was the problem character for me tonight. He would often just simply repeat comments from pit reporters or from Dave or Ricky Craven. I lost count how many times someone yelled "Shut Up Rusty" at the TV.

I was expecting a quiet week of highlights with lots of Indy build-up-but not anymore! Defiantly looking forward to the articles on various places this week.

Anonymous said...

and what was it Brad tried to do to Carl at 'dega? Hmmmmm...

Just saying. NASCAR hasn't taken away a win or penalized anyone for this sort of thing in a serious way since Harvick back in...whenever it was (2001 or 2?). You tell them to 'have at it' and expect them not to race hard? Wish the TV guys had had more time to discuss..

Look for "have at it" to be reformed somewhat in the off-season. Before you know it this is going to be nothing but like the gang wars. You take me out this race, I'll take you out next race" and then it's going to be nothing but chaos.

Well as far as the broadcast, I thought it was good. I would like to see more coverage of the younger non-cup guys. Also, Dave didn't show much excitement in the beginning but that changed as the race moved on.

As far as the last lap goes, I'm fine with it. Obviously, people can be biased depending on their favorite drivers. But when the checkered flag is waving, whatever goes goes. Obviously it is dangerous but its not like the drivers didn't know what they signed up for. In my opinion, it was fine.

I've been a NASCAR fan for years...and tonite...well that was the absolute worst i have ever seen! Not sure what is going on in Carl's head but this needs to get straightend out...what BK did was goin for the win and drove in a little over his head woulda been a good race to the finish. What Carl did there...and then admitting it?? Just wrong.....so dissappointed...

Speaking of Sears Point . . .

I will never forget that Ricky Rudd spun out Davey Allison at Sears Point in 1991 and lost the win.

For the first time (I think), I am disappointed in Ricky Craven's analysis of a situation. Carl thought he was clear? Seriously? He is too good of a driver to misjudge having his nose clear by 2 FEET! I have no reason to believe that Ricky has a bias one way or another, but comments like that sure leads one to wonder. Sorry Ricky, but that was pathetic.

Darn, I was going to copy what I sent to the Fan Council about Edwards taking out BraKes, but hit send before I could do it. Duh..anyway, I told NASCAR that I believe that they must take action, lots of points, not just 25 or 50 points, and parking him for a Nationwide race or two must be publicly considered. I told them they must take action because at this point, he believes he can do anything on the track and nothing will be done. I am Still so angry at his snotty reaction and his pride at the win. Oh!! Wish I were at the track, I'd punch him in the nose! Or at least slap his face. ;-)

I think in this situation Craven was trying not to assume anything before the truth came out....he certainly didn't defend Carl after the Victory Lane interview...i respect Ricky more than some of the other idiots "Rusty" that are on ESPN's broadcast....although i think the comment about trying the crossover move was a little redundant...we all know the history between these two.

I can't believe what Craven said tonight about Edwards. I think that head injury has moved to his brain cuz he's gotta be brain dead to believe that crap!!
And Rusty Wallace has got to go... He's the most pathetic person ever put into the TV booth!!

Don't quite understand why Brad can drive it in too deep into turn 1 and get into Carl, who is on the outside, and that's OK. But Carl can't drive it off turn 4 and get into Brad going for the win, and that's not OK. WTF.

Both moves were great, that's racing. That's what we're talking about right now. That's what NASCAR needs. It was exciting.

No one got hurt. Come on folks, it's stock car racing at it's finest.

If anyone wasent watching ESPNNEWS, Jerry Punch interviewed Brad. Brad said that Carl is trying to win a championship by wrecking him because he has ran bad all year. He want on to say that Carl will prolly say hes sorry, and how cool he is and how much of a good guy he is. Really a good interview by brad, he gathered himself up good there. I woulda had a few cuss words to say after something like this. Its time for nascar to suspend carl, you cant let a guy get away with attempted manslaugher 2x in a season against the same guy. That wreck was WAY beyond boys have at it. Bob Keselowski, you are the man.

Let me just say that I'm a fan of hard racing and I DON'T want NASCAR to put a chokehold on the drivers and send us back to bland vanilla racing. But this wasn't hard racing. The victory was stolen and it was ugly. If you don't have the skills or the car to win the race clean, you can't just rip it off and not only dangerously take out your competitor but have so little regard for the rest of the field! I'm a fan of Edwards and I hate like heck to call someone out for hard racing but even *I* know this wasn't clean. It was filthy dirty. C'mon Edwards, you can't feel GOOD about this!!!

HEY CARL, LET IT GO. TALLADEGA IS OVER. LET BYGONES BE BYGONES.

If hooking a driver off turn 4 is racing then I guess I never was a fan of racing. Somewhere I thought passing a car was involved.

MikeH in Dallas said...

Brad put a bump and run on Carl (even backed out of it a little to let Carl gather it up). Carl straight dumped Brad which is NOT Racing.

The Legends race was for a quarter million dollars and the pass for the lead was clean.

Not a fan of either driver but must add this:
All three big wrecks between them have been caused by Carl turning into Brad.

ps Other than Rusty I thought the booth did good. (At least until the wheels fell off at the end)

I find it interesting that the official NASCAR take (lap-by-lap summary as well as the headline on the main nascar.com site) pretty much says "Edwards wrecks Keselowski" while the AP story, like the one now on ESPN.com, is a Carl Edwards jock-wash.

Dave Burns: Great Job!!

Carl Edwards: Hire a lawyer for when you get charged with attempted murder ... or murder if you keep it up.

Maybe Carl would like to pay for all the damage he caused to smaller less well funded Nationwide teams. Another problem with these Sprint cup guys running all the time. What do they care as they fly home to their mansions on their private jets.

Richard in N.C. said...

From looking at late race replay a couple of times, looks to me like Brad used a fly-swatter to move Carl so Carl hit Brad with a hammer. I sus pect Carl's next visit to the big trailer will start with something like "I thought we told you........"

Brad Coleman did a fantastic job Saturday night. Considering all the problems the No. 18 Gibbs car was having, blown A/C, bad battery, sputtering engine, etc, and then getting hit by his rookie teammate...he still kept his cool in the post race interview! Classy kid in a microphone. Hope Gibbs puts him in a full ride so we can see more of him. Breath of fresh air!

Get the Cup guys out of Nationwide! Truthfully, they make it boring.
