In-Progress At Phoenix: Sprint Cup Race On Fox

This should be an interesting race as the transition from the heat and light of the day into the cool temperatures and the dark of the desert night will be on display.

Phoenix is a unique track for TV as this transition also puts the technical crew in a bind. Starting in the bright sunshine, the crew must continually work on the video from all the cameras as they move into the Musco Lighting of the track at night.

Chris Myers will kick-off the coverage on Fox at 8PM Eastern Time from the Hollywood Hotel with Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond. It should be interesting to see if the ESPN the Magazine story about Aaron Fike and his "high while racing" admission is discussed. The future of Petty Racing will also be on the agenda.

Waltrip moves-up to the booth and joins Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds for the race coverage. Pit road reporters are Dr. Dick Berggren, Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Krista Voda.

Viewers should know that this track is prime for a lot of "Digger" exposure because of the frequent cautions and the location of the camera. Under the lights, the in-car cameras at Phoenix are spectacular. Hopefully, there will be a good crowd on-hand as well.

This single biggest issue with Fox continues to be the coverage of the final lap of the race. Last week, the network had a disaster once again. The live coverage shows the winner as he crosses the line and no one else. The camera zooms into the NASCAR flagman and then cuts back to the in-car camera of the winner even as the rest of the field continues to race to the line. It has been this way since 2007.

Even at the small tracks like Richmond, Martinsville and Bristol the NASCAR on Fox crew has continued this practice of isolating the winner and then replaying the finish of the rest of the field later. It should be interesting after last weekend's complaints from viewers if this practice of manufacturing "drama" instead of covering "racing" continues.

They just flipped on the race without any warning. If I'm a baseball fan, I'm quite angry right now.

I know my comments aren't anything new. I expected more from fox. It isn't even local ball. Fox could have put the game on fx or let us see pre race on fx or fox sports. This is poor planning.

Poor Larry Mac we missed him waving the green flag

stricklinfan82 said...

Okay, as I said I feel in the best interest of fairness the race should have started on FX and the baseball game should have stayed on Fox until its conclusion....

Having said that, if the decision was made to switch to NASCAR for the green flag, HOW THE HELL DO YOU MISS THE GREEN FLAG??????????????

Anonymous said...

THANK YOU, FOX! i have beaten you guys a ton over the early part of this season but i'm astounded that you cut away from the game w/2 out in the top of the 9th and the batter at the plate! and before the end of the first lap!
it was a seriously bad "rock and a hard place" situation and, when both fox and fx were on the game, i figured i would miss the first 30-50 laps. i appreciate how tough the decision must have been and i'm one grateful fan!
and nice followup right now w/the baseball score.

Un-Freaking Believable This is the Freaking Worst, Everybody should just turn it off now and send a message to Fox!!!!!

What the F????

Anonymous said...

Well done Fox. We missed the end of the game and the start of the race.

Being involved in the industry, I appreciate that they're in a tough position...but you've got to do better than that. You have to choose either the end of the game or the start of the race - and you have to make the decision soon enough that you don't screw up and miss both.

This is the sort of thing I would have expected of last year's ESPN coverage, not Fox.

Anonymous said...

Very bad I couldn't believe NOT showing the start! How hard can it be? I know what to expect at the finish now!

Anonymous said...

Pathetic. I hate how the Yankees/Red Soxs screws every other team/market.

They KNEW that they weren't going to get the whole game in before the green flag. Why screw all of us? Or at they very least, why not switch every other market but NY/Boston to Nascar 3 minutes earlier.

Absolutely Pathetic. It would almost have been better if I hadn't had to listen to Joe Buck tell me "Oh, we'll get you there before the green flag. Don't worry about that."

Anonymous said...

they really tried to get the whole game in. you cant blame them.

Nice break in by SF station for boat fire about 2 laps into the race.

Unknown said...

ARGH!!! The race just started 3-4 laps ago and Fox Affiliate KTVU Channel 2 has just broke into the race with BREAKING NEWS of a boat that caught on fire in the bay. Really exciting (not) photos of the boat being extinguished by a water boat. This is a really thorough report, coming up on 2 minutes of burning boat coverage now! ARGH!!!!

WFXT Boston has cut back to race coverage as of Lap 9. I'm still just amazed how NASCAR fans (on this board at least) are irate that they've missed a half lap of coverage when Red Sox/Yankees fans missed the final out of their game! Don't they deserve to see their game start to finish too?

Daly Planet Editor said...

I think that was a good illustration of how quickly things can go from very good to very bad.

They missed the final out in the baseball game and missed the green flag in the race.

Even the best intentions can go out the window in a hurry.

FOX was about 10 seconds off, should have switch with the green flag but they just replayed Larry Mac and BBB which helped. This was a no win situation and I am sure if I was a BB fan I would be screaming especially if I did not get FX. Mother Nature is certainly causing quite a few problems this season

Anonymous said...

I was ok with the whole thing, but full disclosure - I was on Hotpass listening to the booth before the switch....

Back to pre-race. I thought they did a good job of discussing Fike and address Hammond's ownership situation. They could have interviewed more drivers, but I was fine with them just addressing it. Good for Hammond taking the questions and answering directly on the issue.

Anonymous said...

someone should lose their job? Who exactly do you think made the decision to switch? It was a high level FOX producer for sure. It was a no win situation no matter what.

They tried to wait for the baseball game to end but it was not to be. Baseball fans knew the game was on FX. Back in the day TV networks, when faced with an event running long would just "Join (the next event) in progress". There was no back-up network to go to. Jeez you guys should have been around before cable.

You were lucky to even see the start of the race.

GET OVER IT.

Anonymous said...

The same thing happened with NBC/Notre Dame Football in 2005.
In the situation tonight, it was obvious with a 3-2 count that within 1-2 minutes either the game would A.) end, or B.) be switched to FX at end of inning.

Given that situation why could nascar not have added 1 extra pace lap? That was all they would have needed to do to keep nascar fans feeling cheated from the start, and baseball fans from having the last secs of a game they waited all afternoon to see from being cut.

In my opinion FOX tried their darndest, Nascar takes the fall for this one.

It was a FOX failure y all means, they somehow managed to miss both the START of the race and the END of the game, a colossal blunder, ticking of fans of both sports. My point was Nascar could have assisted their TV partner by adding 1 extra pace lap to prevent this from happening.

Both sides are unhappy. I think a lot of these problems, not just with Fox, but with other TV networks as well, is late starting times. The two objectives for late start times are: 1. Cater to west coast viewers to get the most eyeballs there, 2. Transition directly into prime-time programming to get the most channel-flipping eyeballs.

In this situation, even though rain caused a delayed event, Fox did the right thing in trying to show the baseball game to its conclusion. The problems on the last out/green flag remind me a lot about the "Heidi Game" from the NFL. Look up the Wikipedia page about it, I was surprised of the similarities.

Those things said, you have to also fault the parties agreeing to these TV contracts, as they paint such limited flexibility into them.

It always seems to come as a surprise to Boston/NY fans, but a huge majority of the rest of the country couldn't care less about the Yankees and Red Sox.

Switch to the race early in every market but Boston and NY.

Or

DON'T MAKE PROMISES ABOUT YOU WE WILL SEE THE RACE BEFORE THE GREEN FLAG.

It may seem like a small thing, but I can't believe how badly it was executed. It's not like this was a surprise. They had 2+ hours of rain delay to think about the whole thing.

see they even replayed the final out for those of you with out FX. no reason to get mad.

if i may be so bold, let's all take a deep breath & at least agree that fox tried to do something right for nascar fans. no, it didn't work out the way some wanted, the green flag start was missed and all the usual pre-race ceremony was invisible (altho' for all the pissing and moaning about the prerace stuff, i'm confused as to why some folks may have actually been upset over not seeing it . . .?)

BUT! i'm a nascar fan & i have to thank fox for at least TRYING to do the right thing by me as a race fan. yes, i would have like the switch to have been flipped just a bit earlier -- like maybe the top of the 9th inning. or maybe put nascar on fx from the get-go and leave the baseball fans alone. but i give fox credit for at least trying. next time -- and there very will may be a next time! -- it may well be smoother.

i accept that i may be in the minority but i want to say "thank you!" to the guys who made the decision. in my mind, the very fact that it was even an issue to you is a change from previous years and i appreciate it.

now, can you just make sure to show the field crossing the finish line, not just the first car . . .?

I Think Nascar could have delayed the start by 5 minutes or so to help Fox out. I am sure they appreciate Fox not cutting away to the Simpsons or something when they have a rain delay.

Fox really did screw up the hand off. I know they were hoping one of those fouls in the bb game would be a strike and then everyone wins.

Oh well, we really did not miss any real action.

Anonymous said...

my opinion and I have no facts to back it up but

Why do you think FOX kept baseball on FOX until the last second?

My guess is that the contract with MLB DOES NOT allow any games to be televised on FX except for when absolutely necessary or maybe in an emergency. So when the race started it was then a necessary emergency.

Probably the same thing for NASCAR so it was a no win for either. Just very unfortunate.

stricklinfan82 said...

JD,

You're exactly right. What a mess to miss the end of the game AND the start of the race.

As I've said many times already, despite my heavy NASCAR bias, the right decision would have been to stay with the game on Fox and move the start of the race to FX. That way everyone would have won. Sure some NASCAR fans without FX would have been upset if they missed the first few laps, but I think most people with reason and a larger perspective of the big picture would reason that in a vaccuum the end of the game was more important than the start of the race (and this is probably the biggest, most diehard NASCAR fan there is saying this mind you).

Now both NASCAR fans and baseball fans are going to be irate. JD, I hope you're not busy this week because I'm sure a lot of people are going to be looking for "TV experts" to talk about this situation. I can only imagine the headlines tomorrow in general sports land - "Yankees/Red Sox game dumped by Fox with 1 out left for joined-in-progress coverage of a NASCAR race". Not good, that's for sure.

Leaving the end of the baseball game for the start of the NASCAR race was the wrong decision, and leaving the end of the game AND missing the start of the race we were promised was worse.

And yes folks this is really 'stricklinfan82' saying all this and not some hacker pretending to be your favorite Hut Stricklin fan. I am a die-hard, hardcore NASCAR fan but I can also be reasonable and objective when it is appropriate.

Shame on NASCAR for NOT waiting longer to fire the engines.

FOX is getting the blame for this, but in my opinion NASCAR should have realized that the game was in the 9th inning, therefore, they should have waited it out a little longer to keep everyone involved happy. ( race fans, baseball fans, AND the FOX crew )

The switch over, by the way, was a mess.

Agreed. I think the fact that they tried to coordinate a situation (given baseball's start time today) that was unexpected and it didn't come out perfectly says a lot. There was no way to make everyone happy in this situation. I'm sure they'll take this as experience for what to do in future situations such as at Richmond and Darlington later this season.

What I should have done was done a split screen for the switch over. When the one-to-go signal was given, Fox should have put the baseball game in a large window with the audio and have the race on the bottom with no audio. Once the game ends, switch the boxes and show the celebration of the Red Sox and the final box score.

bevo said...

Is anyone else not getting driver audio on HotPass 794?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, if anything that was a good example of finally using FX as a partner for sports.

As you may remember, that was rejected earlier because FX got out of the sports business.

The cable networks of the big broadcast companies sure have played a role in the new NASCAR TV contract issues.

Please don't ruin the anonymous option for the many of us who use it. Thanks.

Okay just like last night, this is going to be a crazy restart with lapped cars starting in front of the leaders.

This would be a very bad time for "Crank it Up" or multiple Gopher Cams on the restart.

stricklinfan82 said...

I disagree with DW on his desire to see a "wave around" rule before the restarts. I would prefer to just see them move them to the inside line. My simple adjustment to the rule would be "the leader must be the first car on the outside line". That would eliminate the "tail end of the lead lap" loophole.

The reason I would prefer not waving them around would be because EVERY lapped car would 'strategically' stay on the track until the wave around during every caution flag the leaders pitted on and everyone would get their laps back, so just keep things simple and move every car between the pace car and the leader to the inside line for the restart.

The new Sirius studio is located in the old Darrell Waltrip shop over by the Concord airport in NC.

Some older fans might have even been to that shop. I am getting a tour and if I can scam some pics I will do that.

Should be interesting and fun.

JD,

That's cool....my brother and I were at that shop several times while occupied by DW.

If you want to score some brownie points give Suzi a clock for the studio!

ah, guys, c'mon: that animation is NOT needed! you were making me happy by not using it until now . . .

fog bank camera again....

Also Why show the 4 pit box if you don't follow it through.....

Newracefan said...

Too bad they didn't have JJ pit stop it was not good. Dropped from 8th to 14th. I do not like the 4 pit boxes I have no feel for stops

I could have missed it, since I'm watching HotPass (with the Fox coverage in the upper right quadrant)., but I don't recall seeing any of those Geico spots with that obnoxious little brat. Just once I'd like to see one of the Wallaces turn him over the knee and beat the arrogance out of him.

Time to start thinking about the finish line once again.

This relatively short track should feature some good racing to the line throughout the lead lap cars.

The question is, will we see it?

Triple split screen to show green flag action is GREAT.

Nice addition FOX !!

Anonymous said...

Gopher Cam OVER USED tonight

Anonymous said...

and don't forget espn news after the race! should be great tonight.

stricklinfan82 said...

JD,

You do see which car is leading right now right? No chance in hell of seeing more than one car finish if that 88 car is the first to take the checkered flag. And Fox production truck, get ready to feel the wrath if you screw us again with the finish line, regardless of who wins.

Kyle said...

Honestly the 88 car is the one car I could see them going to the crew-crowd etc. Before showing the rest of the cars watching.

Love him or hate him, he is the sport. We all know that.

Anonymous said...

stricklanfan, i second that and the #88 team is one of my top two teams on the track on any given weekend! show me the #88 crossing the line then show me the rest of the field! if dale does win & he does something fun/interesting, i'll be glad to watch it on replay!

and there's the top 35 report w/50+ laps to go . . .

bevo said...

Even though I'm watching HotPass it looks like great camera shots on the Fox box especially the one mounted on the wall where you can see the cars slide coming out of the turn. They look faster under the lights don't they?

Daly Planet Editor said...

You guys can add-in the ESPNEWS info tonight as my hotel does not have that channel.

Luckily, it has SPEED and high-speed wi-fi.

The finish line is still going to be interesting. I sense a difference of opinion between announcers and production folks.

At least Mike Joy told us they were going to talk about it "again" in the weekly meeting.

JD

stricklinfan82 said...

Very nice to show the top 35 graphic "as of now". Hopefully they remember to follow-up and show us the final result of that battle after the race.

stricklinfan82 said...

Martin takes the lead. Maybe we are safe with the finish line camera after all!

Anonymous said...

Split Screen is a viable answer for the Finish Line Sequence.

stricklinfan82 said...

Anyone else smell that? Smells like a competition... err... debris caution coming right before the start of green flag pit stops. Let's see if we actually see the debris this time.

Anonymous said...

"At least Mike Joy told us they were going to talk about it "again" in the weekly meeting."

when did he say that on air?

stricklinfan82 said...

Ha! Fox accidentally airs Mark Martin telling his crew that he hopes NASCAR doesn't throw a bogus caution. I'm sure the NASCAR folks next door are giving Mike, Darrell, and Larry the "evil eye" right now, LOL.

Does anyone know who is the fuel sponsor for NASCAR? I'm hearing rumors that it's Sunoco

Anonymous said...

"I'm hearing rumors that it's Sunoco"

where have you been? NASCAR has used Sonoco fuel for years. So why not call it sonoco fuel? would you rather call it chevron fuel?

J.J. said...

They could just say "fuel."

Oh well, sorry I havent't posted more. I was having problems with my Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser on my Dell Inspiron laptop computer.

bevo said...

Please let Burton win so he can see Spencer on VL

Anonymous said...

OK, you have to be hard pressed to say you wanted a wide shot there. you would have had to wait a long time to see following cars. great strategic finish.

Anonymous said...

JD, will we see victory lane tonight?? I would hate to have to wait until tomorrow.

Sophia said...

no showing of the finish line STINKS. But I am still on a high from the Cajun Music outing..the band sat and played a couple songs directly to my 87 year old mom. PRECIOUS!

I listened on radio coming home and was hoping for Jr to finally get a win.

I see there are many posts to catch up on as I take it many thought they would not see the race due to a baseball game.

HOpe you all got to see the race.

JD, have fun in Charlotte.

Newracefan said...

Might be awhile till JJ in Victory Lane he's out of gas and will need to be pushed in.

Anonymous said...

@JD--that's good to hear, it'll be interesting to see if things change. I know I emailed Mike a few years ago when they were doing the "only showing the top 10" on the leaderboard or switching just as the "what's his name now?" drivers would be shown to restart it. He emailed me back a nice explanation and said they'd look at running the full scroll.

@j.j. I guess I'm lost. Are you complaining they're mentioning a sponsor *or* did you really not know who the "official" fuel supplier of NA$CAR is?

Anonymous said...

Sophia

we really missed you.....

Anonymous said...

"NA$CAR"

Im going to assume you just misspelled the sports name.

Anonymous said...

Thanks FOX for giving us the last 30 laps uninterupted !!

Covered the gas mileage drama REAL GOOD.

Difficult job, but choosing the split screen with 48 and Knaus really worked well.

Obviously, as you might have figured out by now, the truck doesn't give a rat.... about what you think or care about.

Anonymous said...

stricklinfan82, I just have to say WHY?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I will even add more question marks here: ??????????????

it would have taken for ever to see more cars cross. JJ just had a big lead. just think about it; to show the just the top 10 cross you would have to wait about 30 seconds!! that's way too much on one shot. Again, I understand your point, but I think you want something that is not needed here in this one instance. Your anger today is understandable but at the same time unreasonable.

Anonymous said...

Are they brain dead? What is so hard about pointing the camera at the finish line and leaving it alone?

I think they do it just to prove they can. ARROGANCE!

Anonymous said...

stricklinfan82, We are getting away from constructive criticism to just plain insulting and rude. You will never get good out of your requests like that. We need to stop being rude as some on here were today and get back to being constructive. Just a thought.

It would take more than 10 seconds to see the next car cross!!!! no racing there. just NOTHINGNESS!!! please explain to me why you want that!!!

SusanB said...

Good race. Got excited about the camera angle for the finish till they moved the shot to the cc. I really don't need to see the cc. I think there should be a better way to handle the finish.

TexasRaceLady said...

Showing the finish would have been almost impossible --- remember, 2nd place was about 10 seconds BEHIND the leader.

Calm down. This was one of those crazy finishes with the leader in his own zip code.

Hey All,

I wish we could have seen the re-fuled car results as they finished.

There was no real drama after all with Jimmie and seeing Chad Knaus wander around the pit box was pointless.

This is a race. It is not over when the winner crosses the line. Not even close. The stories talked about on the TV shows during the week and on the next RaceDay will be coming from the cars that raced each other to the line and were not shown.

This is a shame for the fans of those drivers and teams.

JD

Newracefan said...

I'm on the fence with this one, there was a big gap from first to everyone else, it looks like they thought about showing more cars and then changed their mind or possibly we'll give the line 10 seconds (or what ever it was) and then we switch camera shots and who ever we get we get. The post race coverage was excellent except no Denny or Clint, I wonder if they were rushed to the media center.

stricklinfan82 said...

Last I checked the race doesn't end until the last car on the track finishes the race, so I'd like to see the finish of the event before the post-race coverage starts.

And of course every position is very important as it relates to the championship. Last I checked the championship standings are not based on wins and losses in this sport.

But yet the Fox production truck continues to use the football mentality that all that counts in NASCAR are wins and losses.

And by the way, I'm not alone in my desire to see the entire field finish....

Anonymous said...

TexasRaceLady, thanks for that. people usually don't listen to me do to the anon title.

Bobby said...

The rebroadcast on Speed will probably include the parts not shown on Fox tonight.

Anonymous said...

They could have shown a drop down graphic of the finishing order. Cut back from the cc 10 seconds later...

Newracefan said...

I wonder if ESPNNews will have anything Nascar they have not mentioned it at all unlike last week. I wonder if it will get blown off since it is so late
