In-Progress At The Glen: Sprint Cup Series (ESPN 1PM)

A refreshed ESPN crew is returning to the Watkins Glen road course after a very long Saturday of live TV. That is the Infield Pit Center pictured above. It may play a big role in the Sunday coverage. Click on the picture to see it full-size.

Already this morning, the ESPN family of networks has presented a thirty minute Outside The Lines program focused on NASCAR and the morning preview edition of NASCAR Now. Up next on ESPN's NASCAR agenda is the one hour NASCAR Countdown pre-race show.

Host Allen Bestwick should have lots of topics to choose from where this program is concerned. Joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty, Bestwick can pick from a list that includes Daugherty's future team winning the Nationwide race, Wallace's son continuing his learning curve in racing or the Sunday weather forecast.

Bestwick has been doing a solid job of leading Wallace and Daugherty through this pre-race show since the season began. Now, with the Sprint Cup Series coverage underway, Bestwick has a host of on-air talent that can contribute to this show.

Once the pre-race is over, Bestwick and company will continue to interact with the "upstairs" announce team of Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarret and Andy Petree. These three will face a very different style of racing that has all kinds of twists and turns associated with it. From pit stop strategy to fuel mileage, the Sprint Cup race should be loaded with good stories.

Tim Brewer will also be along in the Tech Center, where he faces the challenge of showing the viewers the many changes in the COT that a road course brings. From carburetors to shocks, Brewer will be on-the-spot when the coverage begins.

The challenge today for the TV crew is to try and tell the multiple stories of the cars throughout the field, not just the leaders of the race. A backmarker playing the fuel strategy game may well become the winner. The normal network focus on two or three cars that seem to be the fastest on the day will not work.

Rain is in the area and Watkins Glen is not a circuit with lights. The race would be run on Monday if things did not reach the halfway point when it was halted. The telecast is scheduled until 5:30PM with a live 90 minute version of SportsCenter following the race. ESPNEWS will have live coverage of the post-race news conference from the Infield Media Center as it happens.

This post will serve to host your comments about the Sprint Cup Series race from Watkins Glen on ESPN. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. Thanks again for taking the time to stop by.

I think Tony's fender is actually missing some decals instead of missing a fender.

August 10, 2008 3:43 PM

On road race courses they have different decal packages. At Indy his decals probably added weight.

Dmo said...

Jr was 2nd prior to break. His car though was behind the start/finish line when the break started. Truex had hit pit road on that lap, giving up 2nd.

Anonymous said...

Tony Jr should have driver 88 pit real soon - not good for the 88

Kyle said...

Dang that splitter is built ford tough!!!

Great camera work again on the spraying gravel.

Vicky D said...

This is a lot like the race yesterday except it was closer to the end of the race. They never reported who had to come in to top off, who was good to go to the end, who was going to try to make it, etc. C'mon ESPN! Tell us!

Anonymous said...

I realize Truex pitted but did Dr Jerry actually TELL US this info?

Anonymous said...

No, no one is there. They clearly have no idea what's going on.

But MRN does.

Anonymous said...

Caution means that the race will have some serious changes and major adjustments in strategy for probably all 43 teams. Why does ESPN see the need for this to be the time to just go RIGHT to commercial?

Wouldn't it be better to go right to who benefits and who doesn't from this situation?

Anonymous said...

bobb said...
I realize Truex pitted but did Dr Jerry actually TELL US this info?

that would be a "nope."

Dmo said...

Dr Jerry read off the leaderboard as it was scored on the previous lap. Jr had not hit the start/finish line when the lap started, hence he was still on the scoreboard in 3rd. If Doc was watching his program monitor, he would have seen Jr come into view 4-seconds behing JJ in the lead.

Dale Jr and Tony Jr really messed up - at least something to talk about on NN Mon afternoon

Where's Larry Mac when you need him?

Matt said...

Here we go Ambrose, this is your shot..

Poor Jr. and Cousin Tony :(

bevo said...

OK who still needs to pit, who is taking a chance, who is good to go but in the back? Larry Mac where are you

HotPass Robby Gordon channel :)

I'll switch over for a bit to see what his view is

Anonymous said...

cRusty says no one can make it to the finish w/o a stop. Zip ( & other crew chiefs)on team radio says different- we'll see. My money is on the guys working the race - not some announcer

Dmo said...

Ok, I don't get those stupid candy bar commercials with the characters..

Kyle said...

I wish they would give us a idea of who is on what pit windows instead of doing a race recap...

Ambrose is in 5th after that loose wheel thing, will he have another stop? Oh wait he doesn't matter its th Tony and Kyle show till the end.

Anonymous said...

showing highlights ala Fox's Visa Race Break is nice but a thru the field might be better. An agree that going to commercial on a yellow is not the best thing but perhaps stay and see who pits and still have plenty of time for commercials later - kinda like NBC/TNT had done for many many years.

Vicky D said...

This is a good time to mention that all the 43 starters are still on the track. Are they actually watching the same race we are????

Anonymous said...

I like how MRN setup the restart while ESPN was at commercial, then came back to promote their sponsors. If you listen to the radio, you know the details of this.

If you watch ESPN, it's the cars coming down to take the green flag.

Anonymous said...

newracefan said...
OK who still needs to pit, who is taking a chance, who is good to go but in the back?

damned if i know! this is where we REALLY need that information!
(knocks on the door of the booth)
helllooooo? anyone there?

We would know about who needs to pit and fuel strategy if they had pit reporters that could actually go and ask crew chiefs about this. While they do have reporters on pit road, whether or not they can ask the right questions is unknown.

Honestly, if I was a CC, I wouldn't want to talk to one of ESPN's reporters during the race. Not unless it was Dale Jarrett or Andy Petree but they're in the booth.

Oh! What's this? Someone is actually talking to Junior's crew chief? I'm shocked!!

J. D.,

Larry Mac is calling Robby Gordon's channel all by himself, with Riz on pit lane. He's keeping up with much of the general action too, reminding us to check things in the upper right and explaining what they're showing in the national feed.

He's very smooth with the play-by-play for Robby, analyzing situations and problems, and keeping us up-to-date with events in the race as a whole.

Unless I misunderstood, Larry Mac said beginning next Sunday, the multiplex channels on both standard and high definition will have ALL the driver's audio with the national video as per normal.

Anonymous said...

I commend ESPN for making sure every drive was out of their car before showing the replays. they didnt just go straight to replays. They made sure everyone was walking away.

Also ESPN had some great camera angels of that incident. Even a pit road camera with one of the pit reporters even caught the accident.

Anonymous said...

Wow. The TV announcers missed the 88 doing a slalom run through the middle of that wreck without hitting anything (I think), but given everything that was going on I can forgive that. Less creditable is Punch referring to Newman as Hornish. And "heavy contact" is not quite the phrase for a crash of this magnitude...

Anonymous said...

We hear from Zippy on MRN saying Stewart would be happy for a 2nd to help him get in the chase. Also expects a green-white checker.

Montoya's crew chief says strategy and qualifying 25th might come back to haunt them.

Then they go to updates on Blaney, Gilliland from the Care Center.

And then there is ESPN. Commercials. Overhead shot on the racetrack.

Even get audio from Addington talking about how Stewart is good in these situation and also is asked and answers that Busch is half a lap short ({but also mentioned that he wanted to add the drama there).

ESPN is finally back to get back to covering the race.

I listen to Bobby and his guys on the scanner during every race. I also participate in an online message board with other Petty fans.

Per what I read at the message board, the t.v. said they are taking Bobby to the hospital. Someone also posted that it's Bobby's ribs that are hurt. Billy Wilburn and someone else from Petty got on the scanner and said Bobby was still in the infield care center and that they were looking at his arm.

So, I'm not sure if it's his ribs AND arm or what. You think that t.v. would've updated us by now.

JD does the greatest service to Nascar fans that I can think of. If the coverage was great, I probably wouldn't even be on the computer right now.

But since ESPN has taken over, I need MRN, FoxTrax, and could probably use some other coverage too.

From MRN I now know who needs to do what and what will happen in the last 5 laps.

Also, I teach TV/radio/broadcast and we study these things each week and I live in the diverse suburbs ob Bolingbrook, IL. Yet JD provides such a great service that kids that don't even watch Nascar learn from how TV/radio covers these things.

Not only that, but I might mention this again, but he answers questions on the spot, which barely ANY blogger does. I am a common reader/commenter on Deadpin, Awful Announcing, etc. but this HAS to be the best blog out there for how much it affects the actual production.

No agenda, go back and do some reading here. We all respect Dr Punch and the job he did in the pits, he's just not a play by play guy. It's a high profile job and legitimate criticism by the customers go with the territory. If you get bad service at a restaurant do you keep going back and requesting the same waiter???

on a slightly unrelated note....

Paul Newman has decided to stop taking chemotherapy and go home.... They are saying its just a matter of days.

What I can tell you about medical information is that anyone medical CAN NOT release any information unless they get permission from the person or his medical power of attorney. I'm thinking that releasing information to the media is not formost on his mind.

jo, i suspect that his evasive driving thru that wreck has sorta eliminated the stress and frustration of the rest of the race for him. at least he'll be bringing home the car with little damage.
that and he and tj majors are good buds and do this anytime there's a red flag.

boyd,

Last season ESPN glossed over it, and this season they have changed course entirely and followed-up quite well.

Normally, one pit reporter goes to the Infield Medical Center and records the interviews when the driver emerges.

As you saw from the media crowd around Blaney, ESPN is first exclusively then comes live radio and then the door is open to all the mics and reporters.

Usually, standing right behing the ESPN pit reporter is a big crowd of media.

If you are the lead announcer for worldwide leader etc - then you should be able to take the heat. Who are you guys? from Bristol - funny how people who post anonymous make allegations.

If you have read here for many many years we are critical of everyone when they deserve it. You name it - we have criticized them. Stop with the Punch fan club already.

Lets see -

He get flustered easily.
He gets distracted easily
He misspeaks facts often (Kyle has never won on a road course)
He mixes two sentences into one sentence that makes no sense.
He get excited going to breaks but not (Usually) over incidents.

Wow there is a conspiracy going on. Tell us what you like about the good Doctor.

The race was going at a fast pace until the red flag. At least this means ESPN can't leave the postrace before the scheduled time is over.

Anyone else hoping there isn't a bunch of restarts/cautions because of wrecks from this point on?

kyle,

I met Newman a zillion times on the Indy trail. He is a nice guy who stays low-key. Most fans never even knew he was there.

Like all the movie folks, he is much shorter and smaller than the big screen makes him out to be.

When he was still racing sports cars, he always had fun with the ESPN guys. Great dry sense of humor.

From the nascar.com website....

Michael McDowell and David Gilliand are being called to the NASCAR hauler after the race to discuss the actions that led to the crash.

ESPN say anything about this?

@red--I noticed that...I was like DJ didn't get the "stripey tie to match your shirt" memo *giggle*

@bevo--yes indeed!

@JD--yes I was thinking about that when they were stopped out there. I'm glad no one got hurt but in the end it was funny. Heck, MattMatt wasn't doing anything at the time so why not chat with him and get an autograph while you're at it!

wow thats sad. He's always been my fav since I was young. Really charitable man.

Newracefan said...

Kyle yes but JP implied it was now and that's why MMD was treated and released from the care center. Which must be a little hard since he and his car as still on the track.

hey kyle: in re: the call to the hauler. . . espn did say those 2 were being called to the big hauler but they didn't make clear if it was now or post-race.

i still don't know if the 00 and the 55 are in or out right now.

bevo said...

kyle-

ESPN did give that information about 20 minutes ago

Anonymous said...

why would drivers be called to the hauler DURING the race? They are still calling the race until its over.

its always after the race.

Kyle said...

JD,
I got the chance to work security for him during one of the IRL races here in Vegas think it was in 96.

Very nice guy, especially for as big of a star that he is. Ive done over time work in uniform for alot of big names, he is one that sticks out as a "good guy"

Matt said...

Hey they mentioned top 35 twice.. woo

Anonymous said...

followup - Jerry May have misspoke once again by omitting that its after the race.

We just don't know. Thats why he has to be perfect. Wow and its not an agenda.

i knew the 38 was out of the race and thought the 00 was as well. in that case, there'd be no reason not to go to the trailer before the race is over.
