Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Bristol, TN (ABC - 7PM ET)

This is going to be a very interesting night in many different ways. The night race from Bristol is on ABC across the nation, but some key ABC local stations have opted to carry preseason NFL football.

Here is the list and the available options for viewers in those markets via ESPN:

The following markets will have alternate viewing options for ABC’s telecast of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol tonight (DT2 = Digital Tier 2):

Detroit (WXYZ) – will show 7:30 – 9 p.m. on its DT2 channel then switch to primary channel at 9 p.m. due to coverage of annual Woodward Dream Cruise

Houston (KTRK) – will show entire race on its DT2 channel due to coverage of Houston Texans preseason game.

Richmond, VA (WRIC) – will show entire race on WUPV-TV (CW station in market) due to coverage of Washington Redskins preseason game.

Weslaco, TX (KRGV) – will show entire race on its DT2 channel due to coverage of Dallas Cowboys preseason game.

Madison, WI (WKOW) – will show entire race on its DT2 channel due to coverage of Green bay Packers preseason game.

LaCrosse, WI (WXOW) – will show entire game on its DT2 channel and in-market on CW station due to coverage of Green Bay Packers preseason game.

Wausau, WI (WAOW) -- will show entire game on its DT2 channel and in-market on CW station due to coverage of Green Bay Packers preseason game.

NOTE: Joplin, MO (KODE) and St. Joseph, MO (KQTV) are both showing Kansas City Chiefs preseason games. Neither station has DT2 channel and due to limited alternate clearance options in the markets, race will not air in either market.

The NASCAR Countdown show will be hosted by Nicole Briscoe for thirty minutes at 7PM ET. Briscoe is filling-in for Allen Bestwick, who is attending to some family issues. Our best to Allen and his family.

Ray Evernham, Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace will join Briscoe in the Infield Studio. Actually, both the pit studio and Tim Brewer's Tech Garage are located outside of the track this weekend due to the small size of the BMS infield.

Briscoe has filled this role before with no problems, but Bristol offers an entirely new challenge of directing high-speed traffic and offering recaps and highlights during the race. She is in for a long night.

Marty Reid gets his first turn as the play-by-play announcer for this race. He is joined by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree in the broadcast booth. These three called the Nationwide Series race on Saturday and learned some valuable lessons about sticking to the action on the track. There is no time for other discussions.

The director faces the biggest challenge of continually cutting cameras all night long as the 15 second laps tick off. BMS bit ESPN Saturday night several times when the director tried to use the in-car cameras live. Other action happened in a split second and it was over before the cameras even found it.

Tonight will hopefully feature the aerial shot, the high cameras on top of the race control tower and the low angle "speed shots" that let the cars zoom right by the camera within inches. Bristol can make great TV if you let it.

This post will serve to host your comments about the night race from Bristol on ABC. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

FYI - When #6 car crashed and the leaders slowed up, Stewart was rear-ended by a lapped car (#37 -Raines) who couldn't stop in time.

and the love affair with Johnson at ESPN continues

Sally said...

And Kyle Busch. they love him, too. Those are the 2 drivers we will know about in detail all night.

Chadderbox said...

Very bizarre the way this coverage is playing out as the race happens in the background.

Anonymous said...

JD, Everyone there is just overwhelmed. The production truck is zoomed in and hops from battle to battle. Marty tries a little play-by-play, then gives up and resorts to news, stats and conversation with DJ, Andy and the Infield.

GinaV24 said...

I'm watching Hairspray during the commercial breaks

OSBORNK said...

Gina, I think it is more than that. I think it is a love affair with Hendrick. In addition to the 48, we've had to endure the 24,5 and the 18 regardless of where they are on the track.

Anonymous said...

Not the typical ESPN coverage that we have been getting this season. Tons of commercials, Im guessing ABC might be the culprit of it, but IDK. My main complain is all the TIGHT shots. I watched the 1999 race from Bristol today that I still got on tape, they had like 3 cameras that race and all were WIDE shots. You could get a feel of whats going on around the track without having to jump around every 5 seconds. These tight shots really bother me, because I like to get a feel of whats going on all around the track, not just a 2 car battle.

Tracy D said...

Thanks for the info on Bobby. And for the Twitter hint. I'll head over there too.

rich said...

Sally, typical ESPN broadcast with a script. They stick to it no matter what else happens. Thank God for Twitter.

TexasRaceLady said...

Sorry I'm late --- I was rummaging through the medicine cabinet for the dramamine. I'm seasick from this hop-scotching camera work.

I haven't a clue what is going on.

Tracy D said...

Go Reutty!

Chadderbox said...

According to Live Leaderboard there is 27 cars on the lead lap - but the coverage I am watching could lead me to believe that only 2 guys are able to win this race.

Charlie said...

Nice restart.

Anonymous said...

When in a program do they measure for ratings......beginning, middle, end? How do they measure the tons of people who must be turning this off?

I went out and got an antenna. Had a devil of a time getting it hooked up. Turned out I had to go through the set-up menu for the tv like when I bought it.

Picture quality varies. Haven't tried standing on my head yet.

man, that one car shot with brewer is so darned unnecessary

Brewer under green. This broadcast continues to take steps back to 2007.

longtimeracefan said...

Nice coverage of Kyle and Reutimann's pass on JJ on the restart on lap 200 something.

Charlie said...

So was it just my area missing the last restart.

Mike (Detroit) said...

Thankyou NorCalFan

Sally said...

We know that ESPN is capable of doing a stellar broadcast...they just did it last night. It's like a Jekyll and Hyde. You neveer know what team is going to show up.

Chadderbox said...

They need to let Marty call this race and make everyone else shut up for a few minutes.

More commercials................

GinaV24 said...

OsbornK -- LOL -- well that could be but then I'm biased since I'm a 24 fan. (don't hate me please) and if they hadn't said 50 year old mark martin so many times last year I probably wouldn't have paid attention to it.

As you can see I'm NOT a fan of Johnson's

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, I was really pumped for race coverage like last night. Instead, it's ten pounds of coverage in a five pound box. We are watching nothing that makes any sense.

Tracy D said...

Is it me, or are there more ads tonight than usual? Maybe they sold more time because it's Bristol?

Jonathan said...

Yeah this is reminds me of 2008-2009 w espn! Hard to watch but I will not stop watching cause I love this sport! Comeone step up your game ESPN! Maybe we have a different crew since its ABC behind the scenes????

red said...

minor point but laps are not 15.5 seconds at bristol; closer to 16.5-16.9 seconds.

again, minor point but inaccuracy on such a basic point shouldn't be acceptable.

Anonymous said...

Gina - I remember that, bad memmories.

GinaV24 said...

ha, I found the football game.

TexasRaceLady said...

From a slam-dunk of a telecast last night, to an air-ball tonight.
(Pardon the round ball reference)

The best race of the season staring ESPN in the face, and they let the inmates run the asylm.

Chadderbox said...

I really enjoyed last night.

I typically DVR Nationwide races and last night I watched live (because it was Bristol) and I thought it was good!

bobbydjr said...

What a great pass by Shrub and Reuty on JJ. I'm just glad I can rewind my TV to see it again, because these doofuses on TV didn't.

Darcie said...

Did you all know that Brian Vickers had heart surgery? Hope all is well with him in the future.

OSBORNK said...

Wonder if they are using the same director tonight? He or she controls what we see. One person can make or break a telecast.

Jonathan said...

Hi Gina! Seriously football??? LOL come on give this a chance maybe we can get some tweets out there and let ESPN know this isnt good!! Btw How are you

Daly Planet Editor said...

Great Mods, great trucks and good NNS races. Now this. Yeee....

GinaV24 said...

buschseries1 - I am going to need to go find another lynchburg lemonade to let me keep watching this coverage

Charlie said...

If they can't do one window well, why try to do two.

Chadderbox said...

I am laughing because they are making this so complicated. I am unable to relate what they are saying to what I am seeing. Everything is out of whack.

I feel like I am on cold medicine right now!

Jonathan said...

Darcie said...

Even watching the Steelers/Giants in a pre-season game is better than this.

GinaV24 said...

and commercials again

LVI56 said...

I'm spending most of the time now watching my twitter feed, actually getting some good info about the RACE. Only recall a few references to points and that's when nothing else is happening.

Chadderbox said...

I am just going to say this...if they turned off the mics for the rest of the night I would not care.

It would be a relief.

longtimeracefan said...

Good coverage of battles back in the pack: Biffle and Kahne for 15th spot on lap 230 something. Logano vs. Truex, Bowyer vs. Kurt B. Martin Martin in 20th. Decent so far. Historical factoid: Kyle has led 1000+ laps at Bristol.

GinaV24 said...

Hi, Jonathan -- I'm good - how are you?

Yes, PRESEASON football and even worse, its a game with the Giants play and I can't stand them.

But this coverage is really making me annoyed.

I love Bristol -- ESPN needs to quit wrecking my fun.

Tracy D said...

Darcie, Vickers had a hole in his heart they discovered because of the blood clots. He's lucky they found it early and repaired it. Also put a stent in a vein in his leg.
I hope he'll be able to race again. Really do hope.

Anonymous said...

Ummm ...

Who really gives a rat's red patooty IF Kylie's led 1000 laps at Bristol??

NOT me ...

Chadderbox said...

I think my cat is in the truck pushing buttons and faders right now.

Caution is out - how about more commercials? pleeez

GinaV24 said...

Darcie, I read about Vickers surgery -- they put a plug into the hole in his heart and a stent into the vein in his leg where the clot was.

He sounded good though - heck went out and did a 50 mile bike ride in colorado so he's in good shape,.

It's impossible for them to get this coverage under control because they keep going to commercial.

Watching this race makes decision making for me much easier then what I had planned. Green bay Packers play at the top of the hour and I wasn't sure which I was going to watch. No problem now. I will be switching to the Packer game.
Only other decision is whether to even bother recording the rest of the race after I switch.

LVI56 You think Rusty is lost and distracted tonight, what about the poor people trying to follow this race :)

Chadderbox said...

Its officially a night race now! Says Nicole!

Jonathan said...

I dont get it, it looked as if ESPN had a different game plan for this season, and after 4 great off the charts tv coverage races we get this, probably the most popular race besides Daytona and we get this??? are they doing this on purpose to drive fans away???

Gina lol turn the football off and grab another drink (i saw your post earlier and I think its time for another lol) Btw I need another Budweiser as well to get me through this! Only thing this broadcast is missing is JP in the booth :P

OSBORNK,

Bristol tonight has drawn more fans than The Brickyard this season. That's a wow.

Thanks Anon!

GinaV24 said...

what? Did nicole just notice it was dark out?

longtimeracefan said...

\JJ's in the wall, too bad.

Sally said...

Hmmm. Keeps things interesting, doesn't it? ESPN just lost half their 'storyline'.

OSBORNK said...

JJ ruined the script. What are they going to do now?

Jonathan said...

WOOOOOOOOOOO alright so happy to see JJ get wrecked alllright that made makes my night a little bit brighter ;0

Anonymous said...

Guys - have a shot every time we get told its dark out, or the sun has set or its a night race. See if you last as long as the living room crew...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dale Jarrett is out to lunch. He is my fav guy and he is just out to lunch. Sounds like he is just lost.

Darcie said...

Jonathan, my Steelers are kicking Giant butt, so it's a good thing. And Jimmie Johnson just hit the wall, so that's another good thing. Juan Pablo isn't making any friends this season.

GinaV24 said...

OK, so that one we see the replay on over and over again.

JPM just hooked him.

Sally said...

For 4 years, JJ had great luck, avoided all this kind of stuff. It looks like karma is evening out this year.

Chadderbox said...

We are going to get more JJ now because they will have to keep up with the fix and the progress.

Ann_Ominous said...

I was just thinking on that restart that maybe Juan and Kyle would be a good match up and maybe Juan could wreck Kyle for the win (karma), but it's Jimmie that winds up wrecking! I guess I'm half psychic!

longtimeracefan said...

Rat's red patooty, the new catch phrase.

Sally said...

Denny out now too? This is getting even more interesting.

Charlie said...

This will help the script. Now we will be seeing how JJ gets through the pack.

GinaV24 said...

Jojaye, I would except that I have stuff to do tomorrow and having a hangover is not my favorite way to spend Sunday.

Darcie -- I like the steelers too and I'm very happy that they are kicking the Giants to the curb

LVI56 said...

48 wrecked, now I'm a little more interested in this race.

Vicky D said...

Are they going back to JJ's rookie season and the problems he had then???

Sally said...

Now it's Kyle's turn. Please, make this race even more fun!

GinaV24 said...

wow, look a retrospective of the 48 wrecks.

Tracy D said...

Who was Petree talking about, "two not getting along." Knaus and JJ? What makes him think that?

Chadderbox said...

I hope they get this coverage under control now.

Anonymous said...

Gina - You read my mind! How many times have we been told its dark out tonight?

The 42 is smoking!

Mike (Detroit) said...

Bif's in a lot of trouble tonight

Chadderbox said...

I thought they were talking about JJ and Juan not getting along?

Tracy D said...

Look at Jeff Greene running 20th in the 26!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Carl Edwards is a great point!

Tracy D said...

Chadderbox, you really think so? Makes more sense, actually.

Sally said...

I also thought the hint was payback from JPM.

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan -- I'll drink to the 48 in the wall!

Darcie said...

We didn't have time to update Carl??? How stupid are these people?

Sally said...

OK, is someone monitoring us? Update on Carl.

Tracy D said...

Any word on what's going on with the 11th?

Daly Planet Editor said...

If we were not hardcore fans, we would be long gone. This is horrible from top to bottom.

longtimeracefan said...

Reutimann and Bowyer battle for second. It's all good tonight. Who wears Wrangler jeans?

Anonymous said...

@ Tracy - I've noticed Jeff Green running well also. Good to see he still has it.

Chadderbox said...

Not sure what they meant?

RWar24 said...

Am I the only one that thinks start from 19th isn't that big of a deal? I mean yeah, it's not the best starting spot, but it's not horrible by any means. Yet they act like Shrub started from the parking lot when the race began.. UGH!!

Charlie said...

Alright, lets show JJ in the pits while the race is green.

GinaV24 said...

JPM doesn't get along with anyone as far as I can see. He's got an inflated sense of entitlement based on comments I've heard him make.

OK, so now we need to see the 48 in the garage while they are racing under green?

This is the stuff they did last year that made me turn the racing off.

Darcie said...

Love this Golden Corral thing. The one near my house was just hit with 41 health code violations. Went to the place once and walked out. It was awful.

GinaV24 said...

JD, if I didn't have trackpass I'd be long gone.

Jonathan - I know its not nice to cheer a wreck and I try not to, but since it was obvious Johnson was OK, at least I don't have to watch him win another race right now.

I'd like to see someone other than KyBu win, too. If he sweeps all 3 races, we'll never hear the end of it. It would be quite an accomplilshment and he's a heck of a driver, but I cannot stand his bad attitude

longtimeracefan said...

It's wonder Golden Corral in still in business. No one ever has anything good to say about them, except that they are affordable. Pass.

Charlie said...

Maybe there trying not to show the crowd at the track so they keep zoomed in.
I just don't understand it.

Tracy D said...

Gina, my hubby loves Wranglers - you can get them for men with skinny, long legs.

Daly Planet Editor said...

If ESPN would just read Twitter and the key blogs, they could get instant feedback and adjust the coverage.

This has been jumping around randomly to cars, sometimes in the lead, and then going to commercial.

No flow, no story and no sense. Just paybacks and storylines and JJ.

Richard in N.C. said...

Interesting race on PRN, just going thru a full-field rundown.

KudzuCarl said...

I love Wrangler jeans, and I'm wearing a pair of Wrangler jean shorts right now. (Insert insult here).

Sorry JD....lost focus on the race there for a minute.

OSBORNK said...

Charlie, this is one of the few races where they need to show the crowd. There are a few empty seats but not the sea of them we have been seeing at other tracks. They haven't discounted the tickets. Last week, the cheapest tickets available were $109.00.

Tracy D said...

I haven't found, in the past, that PRN is as good as MRN. Hope they're better tonight.

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan, the kids are around racing all the time, they could probably do a better job than this.

Or someone could let the cats back into the truck and let them make a try at it.

Mike (Detroit) said...

Missed about 10 laps that break (With the Twins promo) Then to Kyle roof cam

GinaV24 said...

TracyD -- that's cool. Since I'm not tall or long legged, that could be my problem with them. LOL

Charlie said...

I was just saying that maybe they are programed into not showing the crowd even though this track has a great crowd.

Mike (Detroit) said...

Oh for the love of God are they really going back to commercial!?!

longtimeracefan said...

Please, can we see Jr. in a pair of Wrangler Jeans shorts?

GinaV24 said...

JD, it does seem like ESPN just can't put back to back races with good coverage together. We've seen it over and over.

And it seems worse in the cup series than Nwide.

I don't think that ESPN can adjust on the fly - they are always one year behind on their changes.

KudzuCarl said...

They think we're stupid. 48's wreck doesn't change a thing in his "drive for five". As of now, Johnson still starts the chase in first place because of bonus points. Just trying to stick to the storyline and add drama where it doesn't exist.

red said...

well, there you go: 300+ laps in and we finally get the conclusion of the vickers health status. of course, the press conference was at 2 so all that info could have been included in the pre-race but hey! what's the race broadcast for?

'cause we're certainly not seeing the race.

OSBORNK said...

The race occasionally interrupts the commercials.

Mike (Detroit) said...

I'm going to go buy that nail hammer thingy from Sears and put a few in my head.

One good production, one bad-alternating all season long. Just like a peg-leg drunk staggering down the street in a Sam Peckinpah film. This is not good.
