Saturday At Daytona: TNT's "Wide Open" Sprint Cup Series Race (8:15 Start)

This is always one very interesting race to watch on TV as the TNT Network once again unveils their "wide open" coverage. The Saturday night Sprint Cup Series race from Daytona makes for a lot of discussion when it is over.

TNT debuted "wide open" coverage last season with good results. Essentially, the network moves the screen around to allow video of the race to continue in some form during the national commercial breaks. The only time commercials run for the viewers at home is when the local cable systems insert their breaks.

The way TNT sold this to sponsors was the opportunity for them to create custom-made video pieces that will convey their messages to the viewers in a different kind of way. TNT will also add logos and animation elements on the screen during the broadcast, but the big thing will be the lack of full-screen commercial breaks.

TNT's pre-race coverage starts with NASCAR Live On TNT! hosted by Marc Fein. He is joined by Larry McReynolds and Kyle Petty on this one hour show. It will be Matt Yocum hosting this week's edition of The Pride Of NASCAR, as Yocum sits down with legendary driver Marvin Panch.

The NASCAR Future Stars feature will focus on Colin Braun, a young driver who races in the Nationwide Series. Lindsay Czarniak's regular feature this week will focus on Ryan Newman's crew chief Roy McCulley, whose wife is battling cancer.

The pre-race coverage continues with the Allstate Countdown To Green with Bill Weber and Wally Dallenbach seated at the TNT cocktail table in the announce booth. They will explain the "wide open" coverage that will follow at 8PM and will kick-off with a video from Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle and Jamie McMurray.

Even with the "wide open" coverage, TNT will still offer RaceBuddy for the entire event. This free online broadband service is available through NASCAR.com and features four camera angles and some interactive features.

This is the big moment for the TNT staff of this entire TV package. A lot of work and planning has gone into this telecast, which last season drew rave reviews. With Bill Weber and his announcers having a very good season-to-date, it will be interesting to see if the COT will provide the kind of racing that will create a memorable event.

Ken - yes hubby was wondering about the damage on the #20 car - and so far no one has said a word!

Anonymous said...

ok, so there's a glitch in the side by side: the #18 drops way down and we have no audio until he's at the back of the pack b/c of the commercial.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Did RaceBuddy really change to Harvick's in-car????? Wow.

Kyle said...

Just totally blow away by this years coverage on TNT. Complete 180 from last year.

Look at that monster shot we just got of the front straight! The director needs a raise!

Kyle said...

JD it changed to the 29 2 or 3 laps after the driver switch.

Sean said...

WOW two JGR teammates almost wrecked each other again just like last year

Anonymous said...

jd, i was wondering about the in-car as well. remember last week when the vote function was down? i think the switch to harvick may not have anything to do w/the #20 driver change: harvick IS one of the vote choices and so it may just be the time for the planned change.
i may be mis-remembering but, outside of the first race, i don't think they switched drivers, altho' it seemed that they planned to switch out at least at the 1/2 way point of each race.

Kyle

The director needs a raise and to be hired from NASCAR to do ALL the CUP races!!

Course, only if he wants the job. This is just awesome.

NASCAR is clueless if they do NOT understand how much better this is than 3 minutes of FULL SCREEN commercials every 5 minutes.

Daly Planet Editor said...

With the 20 car being such a big story and Harvick not a factor, I wished they had not switched.

Newracefan said...

Any mention of Reut he's way off the [ace

Newracefan said...

That was Pace

but, jd, the 20 isn't a factor right now. your choices are the labontes -- both of them, harvick, burton or yeley. i think i would have gone w/harvick as well.

JD-

JJ's not a Coke family driver ;)

Kyle said...

The view switch vote thing for RB is broken. I think they just switch to whatever car is up front of the coke drivers.

AND BTW on Tony, he had to be given an IV before the race, so hes severely dehydrated.

does kyle petty always refer to his father as "the king"?

Nan S said...

Okay, I've given it enough time and I've decided that I hate this coverage that TNT is doing. I much prefer the side by side that ESPN does with the IRL racing.

The TNT framing of the commercial is intrusive to the shot of the racing and covers part of the action. Also, I don't like the announcers doing commercials during the coverage leading up to the "real" commercials.

Newracefan said...

Yes

bevo said...

Kyle always calls him The King :)
I like it

"that's more sideways than teacups at disney." now THAT'S a great line.

Gotta Love Kyle Petty. The guy is very funny, and is very knowledgeable

Newracefan said...

Reut on pit road for 5 laps and now 00 off the pace.

bevo said...

Catch Marty Snider calling him "Weber"???

Ken-Michigan said...

Green Flag stops coming up. (maybe)

This will be a true test for the TV crew and the way they filter in these commercials.

Interesting to see if they use a split screen for green flag stops.

Really nice coverage so far TNT !!

Sophia said...

that was a FUNNY line by KP..got a great laugh out of weber that seemed genuine, too.

:)

I will take this over side by side for IRL any day. IRL is so tiny and hear, the racing is still easier to see around the adds on my old fashioned tv's. we love it in this house and we watch IRL.

also like somebody else said I will take the GOOD VISUALS anyday and that helps to over look comments about adds. I personally LOVE this coverage...but to me, camera work is the main deal. Otherwise, it's just radio with bad followup.;-0

hey jd? looking ahead: do we know who's doing the jack daniels post race this week? same two guys as last week? (of course, i'm more likely to switch to espn news.)

Kyle said...

hahah love Elliot on RB, he stuck out his thumb to hitch hike from the ambulance.

Sophia said...

oh, GOSH! I forgot all about the JD debacle!! Tonight is going so well..can't imagine those slobs online to erase the great TNT TV coverage and their pictures as they fly through the air.

I got a reply from Jack Daniel's and it didn't sound like they were too concerned about their choice of hosts. Too bad more people didn't take a minute to email them.

Anonymous said...

thanks, bevo. then espn news it is.
(and it sure looked to me like the #88 was speeding leaving pit road . . . and he's my driver!)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Same crew on the JD post-race show. I have spoken with both of them for their opinion about the online stuff for NASCAR.com.

ESPNEWS will also have live post-race coverage from the Infield Media Center, I have been "encouraging" them to add a field reporter for each race.

FYI - NASCAR Now will do a special show on Tuesday from Petty Enterprises for the 50th anniversary of the King's first NASCAR race. Shannon Spake on the scene.

Thanks for the updates about NN

Infield care must be packed Tonys on IVs in there for the rest of race. Now Elliott, and heaven knows who else.

Wow still lots of empty seats. Thought they'd fill up after the race started. Let people move down.

Anonymous said...

This entire shows seems like a commercial. Sure it is better to turn off the awful audio. But instead of spaced out commercials, it is just one over hyped commercial.

Soccer does a much better job that these wannabe's at TNT.

BTW, what's up with some of the cameras looking underexposed in the blacks?

Vicky D said...

I was out of the room for a few minutes and missed out what happened to Kenseth. I'm on tech overload tonight.

Kyle said...

Kinda neat shot out of the 31 car in the spin, changed the tear off for him in mid spin.

Daly Planet Editor said...

jo,

People actually sit "up" at Daytona. The higher the better because of the size of the track. Lots of the lower tickets are give-a-ways from radio stations and promotional things.

I'm rather amazed how undersold the local commercial blocks are around here, you'd think that'd be good real estate for local auto repair shops and gosh knows what else.

How have other cable customers been? Lots of TNT or TBS promos?

Anonymous said...

I've watched more TNT than Raceview tonight with glances to RB. Yeley got the #20 up to 13.

Nice explanation of the 11 & 12 wreck.
Sounds like Jr is staying out again on Raceview - is that same audio as TNT?

Tracy D said...

We've had lots of local ads here in the mid-Atlantic.

Local cable companies are not used to selling a lot of sports-related ads on TNT. They have the NBA, but mostly entertainment products.

Great telecast, I hope it turns-out to be a good finish.

Well if you pay close enough attention you would see the director is only using the dissolves going to and from the chopper camera.

Ya know you may not like the overall coverage. You might not like the graphics. You might not like the Wide Open Coverage. But there's one thing that anyone who has watched the sport for years can appreciate is that how well the on-air crew works together. It reminds me a LOT of the old ESPN when they'd make fun of Benny for eating all the time and stuff. First time in years I have found myself laughing outloud during a race.

Anonymous said...

Newracefan said...

Dissolves??

July 5, 2008 11:00 PM

Its when they have 2 camera shots "dissolve" into one another rather than cut from one shot to another.

If it happens slowly enough on the preview monitors in the control room, you see what it really does - crossing pixels.

Count me out for NASCAR Victory Lane ... I'm not watching it tomorrow ... based solely on the "winner" and how NASCAR delayed throwing the final yellow to manipulate the outcome of the "race" to suit their own desires ...

Anon 11:32PM,

If that is all you have to complain about after a race at Daytona, I think that is not such a bad thing.

Guys, hold off on the conspiracy theories unless they have some TV stuff in them please.

Thanks,

Anonymous said...

So by local break do they mean TNT/TBS break?

Weber's using a pharse from his old NBC days.

There is no such thing as a "local" TNT break. It would only be local if your cable (or sat) company filled it, and thses weren't done that way.
