Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race In Darlington On Fox

ATTENTION NASCAR TV VIEWERS: NASCAR on Fox coverage will begin on SPEED is you have a baseball game in-progress in your area.

The weather is hot, the track is slick and even the veterans had problems in practice and qualifying. It is Saturday night in Darlington, SC.

Chris Myers leads the NASCAR on Fox gang onto the air at 7PM from the Hollywood Hotel. He will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond for the pre-race show.

Update: Driver Jeremy Mayfield has been suspended for violating NASCAR's drug policy as a result of a random drug test that was done after the Richmond race. This should be a big topic on the pre-race show, but NASCAR does not disclose if this is a medication that is on the banned list or a recreational drug associated with illegal drug use.

It will be Mike Joy calling the action once the race coverage is underway. Again this week, Joy worked a very long Friday for SPEED that involved many live hours on the air covering practice and qualifying. Now, he faces the task of keeping the excitement level high on a track that has featured very little passing in the COT.

Waltrip and Larry McReynolds are the Fox analysts while Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum, Krista Voda and Dick Berggren will cover pit road.

Fox has been struggling under the weight of a very heavy sponsorship load. It will be interesting on an action-packed track like Darlington to see how the frequent commercials and sponsor mentions affect the coverage. Digger will also have a presence, from the pre-race cartoon to the frequent commercial inserts.

This track makes great pictures with the Musco lighting and the low-level cameras really conveying the excitement of the sport and the speed of this track. In-cars are effective, but the action happens so quickly that the Director can easily get burned by lingering on the shot.

Tempers have been running a little short recently on the track, so this is really a potential cocktail for trouble between drivers. Scott Speed did not qualify, so his sponsor put him in the Joe Nemechek machine for an undisclosed amount of cash. This week, the Nemechek car will certainly have enough tires to get beyond he first gas run.

This post will serve to host your comments about the Sprint Cup Series race from Darlington on Fox. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

Man it makes a world of difference having the action coming at us instead of all the in-car camera shots

Daly Planet Editor said...

Recapping the field is the only thing they have not done recently.

I hoped Myers would do it but no.

Sophia said...

Dang now the Biff.

What IS the mood gonna be on MOnday night?

Poor Mikey started out well in some races and as a team...but he might come to TWIN with a binkie and a blanky after tonight.

Anonymous said...

@JD--I agree about Jeremy that he needs to speak out. While some things are none of our business, but the air needs to be cleared out on this one.

Who slid in backwards???

Yes! even though they could be giving us some more updates, DECENT camera work goes a long way doesn't it?

Cut back on my whining big time.

Cool moon shots with clouds over it.

These guys are enjoying the race and so are WE at home!

Woo hoo.

Full moon tonight for sure although the trees are blocking my view of it.

I find myself wondering if NASCAR's yellows are affected by the chance of a broadcast going over time....sounded like some debris was out there...

Sophia said...

What the heck! LOOK at that car!!! no hood??????????

Anonymous said...

hey look! it's the UPS/duct tape ford of David Ragan!

Newracefan said...

Do they think the 6 is really going to make minimum speed?

darbar said...

Wow,I just get home from the local race track and Nascar has exploded with news. Mayfield busted for something illegal? I heard on the radio on the way home that Mayfield insists he was taking over the counter drugs for allergies. Personally, I don't know how stupid someone can be to do illegals when they know they're tested.

And is it my imagination or is Fox missing a lot of the wrecks? One of the guys yells that there's a wreck and it takes 20 seconds for the cameras to catch on.

Boy, are they all drooling over Logano?

red said...

hey darbar! welcome back! how was the racing tonight at your local track?
the logano shuffle has started.

Vicky D said...

I second Mike Joy's comment before the end of the broadcast I hope everyone has a great Mother's Day tomorrow too. This has been an enjoyable telecast too.

Sophia said...

toooooooooooo long on that bumper cam

ANOTHER ONE.

YIkes...are the wheels gonna come off the bus NOW :(

What a pleasant surprise tonight's broadcast has been. No complaints from me - you know why? They got back to basics and have done a good job of letting the stories play out. I remember Eli Gold said once when starting a race broadcast that things in pre-race are the obvious stories. All else that lies beneath the seam will come to you over the course of the race broadcast.

Big props to everyone on the telecast tonight for a job well done.

bevo said...

@Alex-

Eli is a very wise man.

Karen said...

Happy to see Logano living up to the hype. Was hoping to see him and Stewart racing for the win.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I spent a lot of time with old Eli, remember the original This Week In NASCAR on Prime Network?

TexasRaceLady said...

I've been neglecting my duty to The Planeteers because I've been busy watching the TV! Imagine that.

Kudos to the FOX crew ---

Dot said...

Amazing thing about Eli is that he had no racing knowledge at all when he first started.

@ darbar, yeah, they were slow to show some wrecks. But tonight, they've done better than usual.

red said...

i agree that this has been a far better broadcast but that just frustrates me even more! fox has been capable of this sort of work all along but we never saw it until tonight.

ah, sam, poor sam.

(and i may have to duck out before this is over to get our daughter and friends at the train station and drive some of the ladies home from the concert tonight in philly. if so, happy mom's day to all and see ya' during the week!)

darbar said...

Hey Red. Love the local track racing. Dirt tracks are so much fun and the best racing. They open up the track for amatures between the final heat races and the main event.

Time for Hornish to give it up.

bevo said...

Still say they need to put Larry Mac in the Jack Arute role with Indy races as a race strategist.

glenc1 said...

Eli was like fingernails on a chalkboard for me...but in comparison, well.....

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anyone see or hear Danica Patrick on the Bob and Tom show?

Once again, she left the door open to NASCAR. Wouldn't that be interesting...

Daly Planet Editor said...

glen, he was a radio guy who tried to get the TV thing going. it worked for a while.

Dot said...

I was just going to type why I think the race coverage is better than usual. No yellows when someone spins. And now there's one for debris.

Something is different, I just can't put my finger on it. You can also tell by about the 100 fewer comments on TDP.

Sophia said...

@bevo

It was a good interview but did you see the Paul Tracy interview? The digital BW look, very dim light with overhead lamp, like cops trying to get a late night confession. That was an odd choice of a set up.

But enjoyed watching INDY today. Will be at my mom's tomorrow and she does not get versus.

TexasRaceLady said...

Groan --- baked beans and gas.

ROTFL

bevo said...

@Sophia-

Sorry didn't see that. Can't say Tracey is one of my favorites but I welcome anyone to the series.

Danica just being smart - keep your name out there for everything. Increases her bargaining power come contract time.

bevo said...

@TRL-

Took it from my joke last week :)

Vicky D said...

I don't think they needed to show JJ's crash during qualifying.

Newracefan said...

Vick, I'm with you on that one I thought it was live.

bevo said...

With the turnaround Red Bull has had in F1 you have to wonder how much more patience they'll have with their Cup program.

Hotaru1787 said...

Just read off UPS Racing's Twitter... they're done.

Not the way to end it.

Dot said...

SDDD is back. Let the wreckfest begin.

I haven't been watching IRL faithfully that many years but from what I hear, I thought PT is kind of crazy. But Robin Miller says he brings lots of fans to the series.

PT seems like 'wrestling' to me..seen him in some crazy outfits, too. :)

But the interview set was ODD.

I have enjoyed this race but it seems like 1000 miles!

Anonymous said...

@Sophia--yes I saw that PT interview, it did seem to be an odd set up

@darbar--I'm glad you had a great time at the track tonight :)

Sophia said...

I agree..way too long on JJ earlier crash over GF!

Hotaru1787 said...

I'm suprised I'm still awake... what with F1 on in the morning and all the ICS coverage.

Sophia said...

Jr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sigh.

Sophia said...

@gymmie

I am GLAD somebody else saw that interview...it was like watching an old detective show.."Come on Paul, admit it, you DID IT" :-)

Sophia said...

ENOUGH SPLIT SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sophia said...

Is the split screen button STUCK??????????

bevo said...

F1 ought to be a wild race in the morning. Barcelona has some tricky turns.

red said...

i agree with sophia: enough watching mark martin on the split screen! give us the race!!

Sophia said...

HELLO!!

FULL SCREEN please

Hotaru1787 said...

I like Mark, but CUT AWAY already!

bevo said...

How exciting! Look at Mark turn the steering wheel! Wheee!!!

Sophia said...

Man I was about to have a conniption with that IN CAR cam.

Useless this late in the race ESPECIALLY.

I thought somebody fell asleep at the switch. :)

Hotaru1787 said...

Full, split, full, split...

Can't make up their minds, can they?

Hotaru1787 said...

I feel (and see) Hendrick vibes...

Sophia said...

Oh boy. The three way split

no bueno

bevo said...

Fox is blowing it now.

red said...

and now two crew chiefs and the tiniest of the three boxes is the actual race.

Doesn't Regan Smith take over as the no DNF driver in X races? BTW, he's in the race.

Hotaru1787 said...

Wasn't good

Sophia said...

Yes FOX IS.

THey saved all the JUNK SHOTS for the end of the race.

It was too good to be true.

Hotaru1787 said...

The later it gets, the crummier the coverage got?

Think about it.

Sophia said...

what do you mean THINK ABOUT IT?

WHY. I do NOT care about WATCHING MARK DRIVE

or anybody

WIDE SHOTS!!!!!

Hotaru1787 said...

Enough with the split screen already... again!

bevo said...

That shot is as useless as teats on a hog

/getting all country on yall

Hotaru1787 said...

Sophia- It's late, so there dropping the ball on coverage quality.

Sophia said...

@hotaru

I was not yelling at you but mercy, they are imploding on the camera work

sigh

Hotaru1787 said...

It's okay Sophia, been a long night for me.

Newracefan said...

I refuse to throw them under the bus for a few poor choices at the end, overall this has been a great race

red said...

did dw just call mark martin "your little man"?!?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks to everyone who stopped by tonight. Great race and lots of fun.

Victory Lane at 8PM and Wind Tunnel at 9PM on SPEED.

Thanks for stopping by!!

Dot said...

Yea Mark!!!!!

Crazy crazy race.

Hotaru1787 said...

Good for Mark!

And David Ragan... DNF :(

Sophia said...

Sorry the finish line camera still stunk

boy for those counting THREE MINUTES in the car cam with Mark on restart.

98% of the camera work was fine but the last few laps.

And of course no good finish

Charlie said...

That was fun. Nice race Mark Martin!!!

Sophia said...

It was great coverage but a LONG night and the few poor choices at the end almost gave me a nervous breakdown but nobody noticed.

Did ya?

Heck I have NO IDEA where they finished.

I miss a WIDE shot of FLine and a DROP DOWN GRID! That works the best.

:)

The boys must be exhausted after their long day yesterday AND tonight.

Thanks guys!

Thanks JD and everybody.

Karen said...

Sure don't feel like I wasted my time tonight. Exciting race, very enjoyable.

Dot said...

Thanks JD.

@ my e friends, see you at the next TDP column.

Note: no confetti next season.

That creepy confetti looks like bad case of Chicken Pox of somethin'

Go Tony! 3rd! woo hoo.

Daly Planet Editor said...

There is a new post up for your comments on the Fox coverage of the Sprint Cup Series at Darlington.

kbaskins said...

That was well done! I think that's the best race FOX has done this year. Aside from running through the field, there really wasn't that much to carp about tonight.

--KarenB

Newracefan said...

Man Ryan looks rough

Sophia said...

I hope the guys have A/C in that booth! It's hot and they are in long sleeves.

Tony and Ryan 3 and 4!! SWEET

Jeff looks tired...wonder about his back, poor thing.

Unknown said...

All of the complaints about the coverage at the end of the race are unwarranted - most of it is just nitpicking. On the whole, it was a fantastic telecast and I thought that the crew did a great job calling Mark to the line.

I'll say it again - it was a great 'back to basics' night and I'm looking forward to watching another race for the first time all season.

Anonymous said...

Good night all c u later. Could we take up a collection for streamers or silly string - that confetti is gross!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks again everyone. Please post new comments on the race review column.
