Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Richmond (ABC - 7PM ET)

From the first race in Daytona we have now arrived at the final Sprint Cup Series race before the playoffs begin. This is a huge night for the NASCAR on ESPN production team. The tension in the TV compound, pictured above, is big.

Allen Bestwick will set the tone with the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show. There is a live college football game on ABC prior to the NASCAR telecast. Hopefully, things will happen as scheduled, but Bestwick is the best at dealing with live sports TV in a NASCAR setting.

This week it will be only Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty joining Bestwick in the Infield Pit Studio. Wallace continues to be outspoken and opinionated, while Daugherty has been put into the role of cheerleader and nothing more. The infield team is always good for a quick shot of enthusiasm during the event, but the three announcers upstairs are the ones really feeling the pressure.

There are going to be a lot of eyes on Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Friday night, Jarrett appeared to be tired during the Nationwide Series race after a long day on the air. It was Petree who stepped up and took the lead during the telecast.

On this night, the atmosphere is going to be electric. Translating that level of excitement to the millions of TV viewers is the challenge for ESPN. Jerry Punch is the person who has been chosen to do just that and it is his third season in the play-by-play position. This telecast needs to work, it's that simple.

Jarrett has been the anchor in the booth for two "Backseat Driver" telecasts of Nationwide Series races that had no play-by-play announcer. While this concept was interesting, it has also resulted in Jarrett becoming unclear on his role. Sometimes, he jumps in and supplies the excitement when Punch has faded. On other races, he waits until he is asked a question to respond. Hopefully, both Petree and Jarrett will step-up and lead the way during this telecast.

On pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch. This group is going to be dealing with some emotional drivers and crew chiefs during the race. It should be interesting to watch this dynamic unfold.

On TV, Richmond is a challenge. Cutting cameras to stay ahead of the cars and let them race toward the camera makes all the difference. Getting behind leaves viewers watching cars racing away from them all night long. This is easy to do as the laps grind by. Richmond features great aerial shots, a super low camera on the backstretch and great pictures of glowing brake rotors.

The graphics tonight are either going to be informative or simply drive viewers crazy. Everyone knows the Chase is going to be set by this race, so the ESPN team has the challenge of deciding how many times that is going to be mentioned in the race.

Throw in a little rain delay and some extended caution flags and it could be a very long night.

This post is going to serve to host your comments about the Sprint Cup Series race from Richmond on ABC. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks again for dropping by tonight.

Any idea how the ABC and ESPN ratings might compare this evening?

ESPN has a powerhouse college football game with our old friend Brent Musburger - Ohio State vs. USC

bozo said...

jd, could be ot for the game

Delco said...

not gonna make the countdown show...over 5 minutes left in the fb game

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yep, let's watch how ABC handles the transition.

The Loose Wheel said...

track drying = wont freak if game goes OT. just fire up the computer justin case

Daly Planet Editor said...

7PM: No mention of NASCAR and no crawl on the screen. Amazing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks for reading our comments....should have happened at the top of the hour. Millions of TV's tuning in and looking for NASCAR.

crawl on ABC just said green flag at 7:45

The Loose Wheel said...

green flag wont happen at 7:45

NOtre Dame vs. Michigan? Oh, great. If they go overtime, they will not cut away for NASCAR, that is my bet.

It's 34-31 now. Yikes.

Anonymous said...

well don't look at me :p they said it! I didn't :)

WABC (New York) will go to race ...no local news

kbaskins said...

Bummer. TSN swtiched to the ABC feed, the one showing the ND/Michigan game. Is the pre-race being broadcast on ESPN or ESPN2?

--KarenB

The Loose Wheel said...

countdown looks like its getting bumped. boxing on classic.

try has to dry ri, so if they got it dry in an hour that's impressive. given the situation right now it might be wiser for nascar to push the start back anyways

Dot said...

Good thing it rained and they have to dry the track. We'd be fumin'.

Delco said...

@JD
Isn't it in the contract between the networks and Na$car that they start the races on time?

Sophia said...

This stinks...my MRN station is cutting in and out intermittently..don't know if it's MRN or my local FM station..that I NEVER listen to except for races...

Anonymous said...

@ David...oh yae...forgot about the rain, again...

glenc1 said...

I went & checked all the other alternatives--5 year old boxing match, geez.. I guess they're figuring they won't start at 7:45 anyway. But, Richmond doesn't take long to dry.

kbaskins said...

As much as I don't give a rat's behind about American college football (or any football, for that matter), it would be really rude to pre-empt this game for NASCAR coverage. However, that doesn't mean that contingency plans shouldn't have been made on one of the ESPN networks.

On the plus side at least the race isn't on ESPN or ESPN2 or we'd really be out of luck with Countdown starting 3:00 after kickoff instead of 3:30.

slightly OffTopic, but I've seen Erin Bates twice now. I thought she was SPEED's 2-wheel girl. Maybe SPEED added reinforcements for the post-race chase interviews?

kbaskins said...

Hoooooooboy! This could be interesting for us NASCAR fans.

I still don't advocate jettisoning the football game for the race though. I know I'd be furious if the shoe was on the other foot.

Ted said...

Sorry but NASCAR coverage will never trump ND-Michigan. ESPN/ABC will always be about college football first. If you want to complain, then complain that NASCAR sold the broadcast rights to a network that they knew could have other sports conflicting with start times. It's time for NASCAR to be on a network where it would be the main event. BTW, what a game!

Anonymous said...

whew - no overtime

glenc1 said...

congrats to haus, unless ND can score in 11 seconds.

Just saying...the NCAA needs to do more about the length of these games, that's just crazy.

Anonymous said...

I'm originally from Ohio -tonight I love Mich. 5 guys planning a contest while watching race would be ugly if race delayed
by bad scheduling

Daly Planet Editor said...

My poor dad is a huge ND fan, I think he is comatose.

Anonymous said...

Ted, we actually do complain about that...

Karen said...

Though a Gator, this has been a great game.

Anonymous said...

Erin Bates from Speed is at the track because she is dating Brian Vickers.

The Loose Wheel said...

Ted, both ESPN and NASCAR are to blame.

NASCAR moreso.

the $$$ clearly overrule fans

Daly Planet Editor said...

So, we get a good thirty minutes of pre-race show and then racing.

Keep RaceDay in mind when you see the ESPN show. Same topics, very different style.

Anonymous said...

The problem NASCAR has in the fall is that if they want to have their races on an over-the-air network, they will have a conflict with college football or the NFL.

The solution would be: No Saturday night races. ABC has very little to do on NFL Sundays since they have no piece of the NFL tv package.

Patrick said...

Austin American Statesman sports writer Cedric Golden tweets, "The arrogance of Weis cost Notre Dame. Throwing on consecutive plays saved Michiqan two timeouts. The taunting call hurt too."

Daly Planet Editor said...

anon 7:21PM,

Originally, we thought that was the whole idea with ABC. Heard that start times might be changing radically for next season.

How does 1PM ET on Sunday sound?

Patrick said...

Anon 7:20,

Tom said...

And what a beautiful victory for Michigan!
ABC now on air with Countdown after local break. Is green flag still set for 7:45?

The Loose Wheel said...

Not good JD. Not for Richmond. LOVE this as a night race!

Delco said...

yea....maybe they should put na$car on Versus so we can't see THAT either!

Tom said...

OOPS...AB just announced. Only a 15-minute wait required.

Green flag at top of hour.

Anonymous said...

@JD-

To make the opposite point of the one I made at the one at 7:21.

I don't want to see how awful the TV ratings would be running at 1 p.m. on Sundays, that's when CBS and FOX both have regional NFL games on.

Tom said...

JD,
Any word on when Cup will release full 2010 sked?

PammH said...

JD-as long as they start the RACE @ 1pm, that works for me.

Tom said...

First irony of night...
PRN call used on Atlanta highlights. What does that tell you? Ha!

Palmetto said...

JD, I read about the possibility of standardizing on 1:00 for afternoon races. Hey, if it works for the NFL...

Anonymous said...

@JD- 1pm Sundays will make sure no one watches a race live.
NASCAR does not get people watch more than 1 single sport. BTW has NASCAR heard of a thing called ummm World Series /Playoffs?

NASCAR really did themselves in with these contracts.

Anonymous said...

They're using HD graphics to show starters...names and heads are cut off for those of us with SDTV's.

NOOOOOO!!!

Anonymous said...

KETV in Omaha just came on with sports news instead of the remainder of the prerace. I'll let you know if they cut it off at the half hour.

Lisa

The Loose Wheel said...

NASCAR vs. other sports I think is a bit overblown. For years they had 1 pm est Sunday start times and consistently had rising ratings for years. Yes it exploded with the turn of the millennium and would probably take an immediate hit if they went back to that in the short run but I honestly think in the long run the NASCAR fans will stay tuned into NASCAR regardless what else is going on. Willing to bet there are several race fans that have either multiple tv's on or other forms of media to keep up with NFL and NASCAR most of the Chase. I know I do.

Tom said...

Sorry about my last post...didn't leave my name...

Tom

Daly Planet Editor said...

The issues are the late start times putting the ratings down as races run past dinnertime on the East Coast.

NASCAR had dealt with televised local football for decades. It is an issue they must decide how to handle.

Which series will race together is also going to be fun to see. The standalone races have been rough, while some like Iowa have been fantastic.

Hate to be the schedule maker right now.

Daly Planet Editor said...

But weather is the wild card. Somehow NASCAR didn't need to delay the race this time. The weather made the call to delay the start.

Anonymous said...

I would suggest he best start time would be ... and I know some folks won't like this, 4 p.m. Sunday.

That allows it to be afternoon on the west coast, and the way the NFL contract works, only one of the two networks has a live game on. Problem is it gives less of a window for rain.

Hey, I'm still on a diet!

Anonymous said...

@PammH- no arguements :) just most people we know follow something & NASCAR or NASCAR & something. Between NFL Coll. Football starting, baseball winding down to the playoffs & WS, people have to decide what to watch live - was my point. We have a few "single sporters" in the group. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

Palmetto said...

Starting at 1:00 may compete with the NFL, but waiting until 2:00 guarantees people aren't going to leave the game their already watching.

I like night races as a TV-watching fan; they let me get a lot of stuff done during the afternoon and still watch the race. As a race-attending fan I absolutely hate them. You have to get there early to have a chance at a decent parking space, figure out how to stay cool while killing the day, and stay an extra night in a hotel room instead of driving home. I've dropped Charlotte, and the fall Atlanta and Bristol races from my travel plans, and only go to Darlington because is 90 minutes from the house.

Just me.
