Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Richmond (ABC - 7PM ET)
From the first race in Daytona we have now arrived at the final Sprint Cup Series race before the playoffs begin. This is a huge night for the NASCAR on ESPN production team. The tension in the TV compound, pictured above, is big.
Allen Bestwick will set the tone with the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show. There is a live college football game on ABC prior to the NASCAR telecast. Hopefully, things will happen as scheduled, but Bestwick is the best at dealing with live sports TV in a NASCAR setting.
This week it will be only Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty joining Bestwick in the Infield Pit Studio. Wallace continues to be outspoken and opinionated, while Daugherty has been put into the role of cheerleader and nothing more. The infield team is always good for a quick shot of enthusiasm during the event, but the three announcers upstairs are the ones really feeling the pressure.
There are going to be a lot of eyes on Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Friday night, Jarrett appeared to be tired during the Nationwide Series race after a long day on the air. It was Petree who stepped up and took the lead during the telecast.
On this night, the atmosphere is going to be electric. Translating that level of excitement to the millions of TV viewers is the challenge for ESPN. Jerry Punch is the person who has been chosen to do just that and it is his third season in the play-by-play position. This telecast needs to work, it's that simple.
Jarrett has been the anchor in the booth for two "Backseat Driver" telecasts of Nationwide Series races that had no play-by-play announcer. While this concept was interesting, it has also resulted in Jarrett becoming unclear on his role. Sometimes, he jumps in and supplies the excitement when Punch has faded. On other races, he waits until he is asked a question to respond. Hopefully, both Petree and Jarrett will step-up and lead the way during this telecast.
On pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch. This group is going to be dealing with some emotional drivers and crew chiefs during the race. It should be interesting to watch this dynamic unfold.
On TV, Richmond is a challenge. Cutting cameras to stay ahead of the cars and let them race toward the camera makes all the difference. Getting behind leaves viewers watching cars racing away from them all night long. This is easy to do as the laps grind by. Richmond features great aerial shots, a super low camera on the backstretch and great pictures of glowing brake rotors.
The graphics tonight are either going to be informative or simply drive viewers crazy. Everyone knows the Chase is going to be set by this race, so the ESPN team has the challenge of deciding how many times that is going to be mentioned in the race.
Throw in a little rain delay and some extended caution flags and it could be a very long night.
This post is going to serve to host your comments about the Sprint Cup Series race from Richmond on ABC. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks again for dropping by tonight.

ESPN has a powerhouse college football game with our old friend Brent Musburger - Ohio State vs. USC
jd, could be ot for the game
not gonna make the countdown show...over 5 minutes left in the fb game
Yep, let's watch how ABC handles the transition.
track drying = wont freak if game goes OT. just fire up the computer justin case
7PM: No mention of NASCAR and no crawl on the screen. Amazing.
Thanks for reading our comments....should have happened at the top of the hour. Millions of TV's tuning in and looking for NASCAR.
crawl on ABC just said green flag at 7:45
green flag wont happen at 7:45
NOtre Dame vs. Michigan? Oh, great. If they go overtime, they will not cut away for NASCAR, that is my bet.
It's 34-31 now. Yikes.
well don't look at me :p they said it! I didn't :)
WABC (New York) will go to race ...no local news
Bummer. TSN swtiched to the ABC feed, the one showing the ND/Michigan game. Is the pre-race being broadcast on ESPN or ESPN2?
--KarenB
countdown looks like its getting bumped. boxing on classic.
try has to dry ri, so if they got it dry in an hour that's impressive. given the situation right now it might be wiser for nascar to push the start back anyways
Good thing it rained and they have to dry the track. We'd be fumin'.
@JD
Isn't it in the contract between the networks and Na$car that they start the races on time?
This stinks...my MRN station is cutting in and out intermittently..don't know if it's MRN or my local FM station..that I NEVER listen to except for races...
@ David...oh yae...forgot about the rain, again...
I went & checked all the other alternatives--5 year old boxing match, geez.. I guess they're figuring they won't start at 7:45 anyway. But, Richmond doesn't take long to dry.
As much as I don't give a rat's behind about American college football (or any football, for that matter), it would be really rude to pre-empt this game for NASCAR coverage. However, that doesn't mean that contingency plans shouldn't have been made on one of the ESPN networks.
--KarenB
sophia, u ever do the upgrade? or try it in IE. my firefox hates TP
ESPN/ABC are really screwed up
On the plus side at least the race isn't on ESPN or ESPN2 or we'd really be out of luck with Countdown starting 3:00 after kickoff instead of 3:30.
dustin long: green flag still at 7:45PM.
Here we go again - and it's only week #2 of college football.
slightly OffTopic, but I've seen Erin Bates twice now. I thought she was SPEED's 2-wheel girl. Maybe SPEED added reinforcements for the post-race chase interviews?
Hoooooooboy! This could be interesting for us NASCAR fans.
I still don't advocate jettisoning the football game for the race though. I know I'd be furious if the shoe was on the other foot.
--KarenB
Right...just like every night i set my dvr to catch nascar now and i get a rerun of something else
8PM green flag just announced.
-sigh-
GENIUS SCHEDULING ESPN!
@dustinlong: #NASCAR ... Series officials just announced that command to start engines pushed back to 8 p.m. Eastern
--KarenB
Hello all
Got home to a living room full of people - hubby back from vacation so he is going to "watch" the race. So football is on... what happens if/when game goes OT?
Good grief, I forgot how much I hate this time of year.
We just caught a break (no pun intended).
--KarenB
Sorry but NASCAR coverage will never trump ND-Michigan. ESPN/ABC will always be about college football first. If you want to complain, then complain that NASCAR sold the broadcast rights to a network that they knew could have other sports conflicting with start times. It's time for NASCAR to be on a network where it would be the main event. BTW, what a game!
whew - no overtime
congrats to haus, unless ND can score in 11 seconds.
Just saying...the NCAA needs to do more about the length of these games, that's just crazy.
I'm originally from Ohio -tonight I love Mich. 5 guys planning a contest while watching race would be ugly if race delayed
by bad scheduling
My poor dad is a huge ND fan, I think he is comatose.
Ted, we actually do complain about that...
Though a Gator, this has been a great game.
Erin Bates from Speed is at the track because she is dating Brian Vickers.
Ted, both ESPN and NASCAR are to blame.
NASCAR moreso.
the $$$ clearly overrule fans
So, we get a good thirty minutes of pre-race show and then racing.
Keep RaceDay in mind when you see the ESPN show. Same topics, very different style.
The problem NASCAR has in the fall is that if they want to have their races on an over-the-air network, they will have a conflict with college football or the NFL.
The solution would be: No Saturday night races. ABC has very little to do on NFL Sundays since they have no piece of the NFL tv package.
Austin American Statesman sports writer Cedric Golden tweets, "The arrogance of Weis cost Notre Dame. Throwing on consecutive plays saved Michiqan two timeouts. The taunting call hurt too."
anon 7:21PM,
Originally, we thought that was the whole idea with ABC. Heard that start times might be changing radically for next season.
How does 1PM ET on Sunday sound?
Anon 7:20,
duh. I totally forgot about Vickers. Thanks
And what a beautiful victory for Michigan!
ABC now on air with Countdown after local break. Is green flag still set for 7:45?
Not good JD. Not for Richmond. LOVE this as a night race!
yea....maybe they should put na$car on Versus so we can't see THAT either!
OOPS...AB just announced. Only a 15-minute wait required.
Green flag at top of hour.
@JD-
To make the opposite point of the one I made at the one at 7:21.
I don't want to see how awful the TV ratings would be running at 1 p.m. on Sundays, that's when CBS and FOX both have regional NFL games on.
JD,
Any word on when Cup will release full 2010 sked?
JD-as long as they start the RACE @ 1pm, that works for me.
First irony of night...
PRN call used on Atlanta highlights. What does that tell you? Ha!
JD, I read about the possibility of standardizing on 1:00 for afternoon races. Hey, if it works for the NFL...
@JD- 1pm Sundays will make sure no one watches a race live.
NASCAR does not get people watch more than 1 single sport. BTW has NASCAR heard of a thing called ummm World Series /Playoffs?
NASCAR really did themselves in with these contracts.
They're using HD graphics to show starters...names and heads are cut off for those of us with SDTV's.
NOOOOOO!!!
KETV in Omaha just came on with sports news instead of the remainder of the prerace. I'll let you know if they cut it off at the half hour.
Lisa
NASCAR vs. other sports I think is a bit overblown. For years they had 1 pm est Sunday start times and consistently had rising ratings for years. Yes it exploded with the turn of the millennium and would probably take an immediate hit if they went back to that in the short run but I honestly think in the long run the NASCAR fans will stay tuned into NASCAR regardless what else is going on. Willing to bet there are several race fans that have either multiple tv's on or other forms of media to keep up with NFL and NASCAR most of the Chase. I know I do.
Sorry about my last post...didn't leave my name...
Tom
The issues are the late start times putting the ratings down as races run past dinnertime on the East Coast.
NASCAR had dealt with televised local football for decades. It is an issue they must decide how to handle.
Which series will race together is also going to be fun to see. The standalone races have been rough, while some like Iowa have been fantastic.
Hate to be the schedule maker right now.
Thanks, anyone who is watching local news right now on ABC, let us know in the comments.
ABC/ESPN still has not missed a green flag ... unlike FOX.
But weather is the wild card. Somehow NASCAR didn't need to delay the race this time. The weather made the call to delay the start.
I would suggest he best start time would be ... and I know some folks won't like this, 4 p.m. Sunday.
That allows it to be afternoon on the west coast, and the way the NFL contract works, only one of the two networks has a live game on. Problem is it gives less of a window for rain.
Finally on here in Pittsburgh after Local news.
jojaye, not to argue, but the only sport I watch or care about is Nascar.
There is your Erin Bates sighting, now it's official.
Anon 7:32
You have to factor in the tracks that don't have lights. It'll be impossible for tracks like Texas and Martinsville to get full races in in the fall.
OOOPS...
Texas has lights...my bad!
You know, I like Twitter but it blows up more than my first car in high school.
As a huge michigan fan, I was thrilled to see the end of the game...and also thrilled that it didn't run into the start of the race.
hey gang! too much rain for the greek festival tonight so i'm glad to be on-board tonight.
laptop plugged in, 2 leaderboards waiting for data, twitter up and running, buffalo chicken cheese steak for dinner and i think i'm about ready.
now if only the broadcast would be as strong as n'wide was last night!
Sally,
You can thank Mommy Nature for that with rain pushing back the start just enough. ;)
Tom, putting that schedule together every year is rough. Lots of issues and factors.
AB should handle ALL promos
Tom...every now and them Ma Nature comes thru for the good guys!
JD,
The release of this year's sked has come a lot later than usual. I know Las Vegas has already announced its weekend dates (Feb. 26-28), but no word on the rest.
That the low-cal Buffalo chicken cheese steak?
Hey, I'm still on a diet!
@PammH- no arguements :) just most people we know follow something & NASCAR or NASCAR & something. Between NFL Coll. Football starting, baseball winding down to the playoffs & WS, people have to decide what to watch live - was my point. We have a few "single sporters" in the group. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings.
Starting at 1:00 may compete with the NFL, but waiting until 2:00 guarantees people aren't going to leave the game their already watching.
I like night races as a TV-watching fan; they let me get a lot of stuff done during the afternoon and still watch the race. As a race-attending fan I absolutely hate them. You have to get there early to have a chance at a decent parking space, figure out how to stay cool while killing the day, and stay an extra night in a hotel room instead of driving home. I've dropped Charlotte, and the fall Atlanta and Bristol races from my travel plans, and only go to Darlington because is 90 minutes from the house.
Just me.
I have my Golden Oreos on standby...
KETV in Omaha just cut to racing after sports, weather, a little local news and 5 minutes of commercials after the Notre Dame game.

Have you tried TweetDeck?
Remember, the NFL is just for a small part of the season. An important part, but the start time issue is much bigger.
6:38 and still watching news here in Fargo. They don't seem to be in any hurry, we're 15 minutes into the newscast, they're going to the break after weather and they're setting up for more stories after the break.
what's the song they keep playing?
thanks for the shout out glenc1. This was a pleasant surprise. I thought Michigan would play well, but I thought that in the end Notre Dame would over power Michigan.
Patrick, it has been up and down three times today. Gone for me now.
lol Mayfield clip
Lisa
If the Huskers are playing, there could be a mile wide meteor about to hit the Earth and any station there would go to Husker highlights first, so it's not surprising at all they are cutting into pre race. That's the Nebraska way.
@Jojaye-np! it's all good...
I am currently watching the local news on WDAY in Fargo, ND, even though the football game ran late. It's the full newscast too, not an abbreviated one.
If I miss the opening ceremonies because of this, they will be getting another email from me. I was civil in the first one. If I have to send another, I won't be quite so civil.
Allmendinger admitting on MRN that the crew swap was to focus on 2010. His entire group that was Sorenson's will be his.
DrT is in his office, watching. AB keeping traffic moving--and the PRN/MRN radio calls did not go unnoticed. One semi OT question: Why do I salivate like Pavlov's Dog when I hear the Monday Night Football theme (called "Heavy Action", BTW)?
Looking forward to some informed commentary from you Planeteers--I know you won't disappoint!
MRN alot of balance between chasers and everyone else
JD Twitter doing OK for me it's blogger that is giving me fits. Can you say slooooowwwwww
Go Becky! Give 'em all the grief you can.
Local news has a bigger audience during the week, NOT on the weekends.
If that's not true, then why are there "weekend" anchors?
And so far, chasers/wannabees only on ABC.
Every one in fargo, WDAY is Known for prempting NBA pregame so this is nothing new
Is there a better way to view Blogger? Besides reload, reload, reload?

That the low-cal Buffalo chicken cheese steak?
hell to the NO! bite your tongue for even thinking such a thing let alone saying it to someone in philly area! we don' do no stinkin' low cal "stuff"!!
haha, red that was great
I think we all missed the anthem... they were deffinately unrolling an american flag and the studio shook when the jets flew over...
not gonna be an 8 pm start...
so red, you don't want a nice chocolate Slim Fast?
Brian, we haven't missed a thing. They are preparing though, so i retract my no 8 pm start statement
buffalo chicken is one thing, cheese steak another. They do NOT belong together. AND, lo-cal does not compute with either of these. No, just no.
Not yet Patrick, working on a solution. Most of them involve money and ads and blah blah blah...
@Sally-did you expect anything else? 5 mins to presentation of colors according to officials..
after a little searching I found who the featured artist is
http://twitter.com/Comicbookheroes
at least there wasn't a closeup of Tim's hands...
haus, glad it was a good game. I'm a Giants fan, we totally get the hurry up thing, lol.
Smooth, so I wonder when they will talk about the race start time?
Daly Planet Editor said...

ummmm, that's be a nope! i didn't even know there was such a travesty! my only regret is that i can't have a guinness to go with all this!!
(i am, truth be told, a food snob: comes from being married to a chef for 24 years!)
@Pamm...not really. I'm resigned to only seeing 1/3 of the field tonight. Everyone but chasers/sannabees will be ignored. Unless they take out someone 'important'. This is one of my many objections to the crapshoot.
Jr just interviewed on MRN..
6:50 and the first mention of Nascar on the WDAY newscast, from the sports guy closing out his segment.
I have poor memory but has there ever been this many chasers not locked in going into the final regular season race? It's going to be quite interesting to see how well they try to keep the live points updated on a track that positions can change so fast.
The tech garage segment on "disaster drill" was a little frosty as it made its way from the WWL's video freezer, IMO.
MRN interviewed Kyle Busch, Addington, Allmendinger, Logano, Earnhardt, those are the ones I remember offhand.
Oh, Reutimann and Kenseth too, has ESPN even interviewed a single driver outside the chase?
JD, if you cut the sandwich in half, all the calories fall out....
David thanks, I wouldn't think they would skip it, but the people are holding the flag, and there was a flyover of some sorts. it is an instrumental anthem, JD should be very happy with it.
ahh patrick, you have missed a moment! buffalo chicken cheesesteak is chicken steak with blue cheese and buffalo sauce in a philly hoagie roll. all the great flavors of heart-stopping foods in one sandwich!
and that's why the lack of a beer with it is such a tragedy!
Tech Garage actually taped that this afternoon.
All you opening ceremony fans, here you go.
Red your actually making me homesick, well a little anyway. Cheesesteaks @ Outer Banks not going to happen. The roll alone would be wrong.
Wonder how the Victory Lane will go if Vickers wins?
Flyover happened earlier too.
JD you picked the anthem. Very nice
FABULOUS ANTHEM!!!
now THAT is the best kind of anthem.
JD - if you eat it standing up the calories are burned off by the act of standing while eating.
The cappuccino slim fasts are a bit better :)
JD VIckers VIctory Lane?
flyover was probably early due to the scheduled start being 10 minutes ago.
makes sense.
good opening ceremonies, other tracks take note!
haha, Mears' daughter is adorable
Stupid TrackPass PitCommand "Chase" tab is showing Vickers 69 points behind Kenseth and Kryle 86 points out. What the hell is the use of having a feature like that if it's incorrect?
--KarenB
karen, its been that way for weeks now.
dunno why.
Daly Planet Editor said...
Wonder how the Victory Lane will go if Vickers wins?
must be the cheesesteak: i'm missing this reference, jd. can you explain -- and stop laughing at me?
@KarenB - Aren't the standings on Trackpass calculated using the drivers' starting positions?...
Yeah, I know David. You think they would have fixed it for tonight. Dumbasses.
--KarenB
We have been chatting about the fact that Erin Bates, the female reporter for SPEED's motocross and other shows is now Brian's GF.
That was her standing next to Brian in a gray shirt.
oh boy chase chase chase. I expect the cameras to follow only the chase boys
Anyone else without sound oops never mind it's obviously them
@KarenB - Sorry, that doesn't make sense either. I guess they're just wrong.
Never seen her before...Vickers did well for himself...
This is gonna be fun folks.
GO SHRUBBY!!!
nice of knaus to stop by the #5 car. did he visit the 24 and 88 as well?
How did they miss showing the soldier giving the command???
Good pre race with the military band, pledge of alligance, and command.
No radical rock groups or off the wall stuff.
JD Is she the 2 wheel reporter for Speed Report with questionable shirt choices at times?
Budweiser Chevy??
Chevy??
It'd be ok if he had messed up and been premature in calling it a Ford -- but a Chevy?
ah, man: kasey's the in-car reporter. nothing good ever comes of having that position in a race. . .
Color me clueless
I missed the BV Vlane statement, too
but I TOTALLY missed VL last week..had no clue SPEED was doing it LIVE after the race & it wasn't mentioned here during the blogging...or I missed it if it was
I would like to see the track and how wet or dry it is...
@ Martin
The actual points are shown for those currently in the Chase, ie. Stewart has 3694, Matt has 3077. Their names are shown in yellow. Those outside the chase are merely shown as a minus figure. So Vickers should be -20, but is -69. Busch should be -37, but is -86. Go figure.
--KarenB
questionable shirt choices at times?
what?! do i need to start watching me some bikes now on SPEED? lol
anon@8:03: methinks they're flashing back to when the bud car sported an "8" on it!
Too much yakking with Kasey & cc. PS she's back from Atlanta.
sophia, dont feel bad since I was the first to mention it. I remembered it was Sunday night, VL is always on Sunday night so I flipped over and poof there it was
50 year old Mark Martin
gulp.
Marty Smith says Tom Cruise is back tonight. I wonder if he is again wearing sunglasses at night?
I'm shocked there are in-cars for non-chasers, but it's a good thing!
JD no sunglasses Dustin Long had twitter pic
ponsors pay for the in-cars, don't they?
For those of you who have not been around this week, Shannon Spake announced she is pregnant with twin boys and Elliot Sadler's wife Amanda is also expecting.
Good luck to both.
@KarenB - Just did the math, Vickers and Busch are that many points behind Mark Martin. Why would they give the minuses compared to Martin and not Kenseth?...
cars ordered to stay single file for time being, trying to dry pit road
hey jamie? this set of eyes aren't gonna be on the 18 tonight even if there's a camera devoted justti that car.
just sayin'.
and there ain't no "seed" in nascar so how 'bout everyone quit using that refernce? kthanx.
JD, I was wondering that too...it wasn't an all day soaking rain, so hopefully it really is dry.
That should be 'sponsors'. JD, is your laptop thing contagious?
@KarenB - Martin is 10th... Maybe somebody forgot the Chase has 12 drivers now, not 10.
Actually I think a Toy in the Chevy R&R 400 would be a bad thing...
Jamie Little let out the script for the night....all eyes will be on the #18 and if he can make the chase.
I should keep track the amount of time they have a camera on the 17, 18 and 83 cars after the green flag drops.
Oooo, I never thought of that, Martin. I don't know why they do it that way, but at least it gives me a baseline.
Thanks!
--KarenB
"Seed"
nascar term.
maybe old 'Cole' is there on a recruiting trip....
The nice JGR pr lady who sang the anthem yesterday said it was still damp on pit road.
I bet the spanish play by play guy is better than JP
Mike, they had been thumping the "team orders" script all day with Smoke because of Ryan Newman.
That got old fast...
What's with the sound?
Although two out of three of those cars have sponsors tonight, I'm thinking the potential S&P tonight are the #36, #66, #71 and #87.
50 year old...help me.
50 year old Mark Martin #2
gulp
A little product placement there? LOL....an overhead shot of the garage that says "Capital One" right before the green flag.
i think the #1 car forgot which pedal was the throttle on that start . . .
Keep us honest on that please MV.
The drinks will be consumed with the mention of bubbleboys,18, if the Chase starts now, young man, sails into corner, or cats.
Think they make it to 1/2 way?
Off to do laundry...
The S&Ps will probably skew some of the clinching as we go along tonight.
Thanks to DJ and Andy for speaking right up on that one.
well, guess the 83 doesn't have to think about team orders tonight.
oh, wait! i doubt he was counting on that in the first place.
Heavy duty racing mid pack on back...and they show us the leaders in single file. Not a good omen.
Local break or did they not expect pit stops?
Pretty good pic of the TV compound today, you can click on it to see if fullsize.
Joyjaye, you forgot broken foot. I'm aiming to have you blind drunk by the end of the race. :-)
