Live Blogging The Daytona ARCA Race (4:30PM ET - SPEED)

There has never been as much build-up for the ARCA race at Daytona in history. Normally considered a crash-fest, this season ARCA got a big boost in popularity with the arrival of Danica Patrick.

SPEED will televise the race live beginning at 4:30PM ET. Rick Allen will call the action with Phil Parsons and Darrell Waltrip joining him in the booth. Wendy Venturini and Jim Tretow will be covering pit road.

SPEEDtv.com will be streaming Patrick's in-car camera with sound on the website during the race. Expect the focus to be squarely on Patrick.

This post will serve to host your comments on the SPEED coverage of the ARCA race from Daytona. To add your TV/media-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is not a fan site and we are also fan-friendly. Our focus is the TV coverage of motorsports.

Thanks for joining us today.

@Brad
She has had more publicity before the race and proclaimed the savior of NASCAR.
There are some women that are more deserving of a ride than she is.
Plus if she decides to race in the Nationwide Series at Daytona, she will be taking Kelly Bires ride.

@ brad

I don't care about Danica either way. What I do object to is much of this broadcast has focussed on her. And since this is a blog about the TV coverage, that's what I'm talking about.

This race will be allowed about 15 more minutes of caution time. Because if they would stay green from here on out, they can get it over in 30 minutes.

check out this Tweet form Kyle Busch

Is this the arca 200 or danica 200. No offence, but geez. There r other drivers and sponsors that need coverage as well.

guess he never watched a replay of one of his Nationwide races

Jimbacca said...

Nailed it Karen.

More power to her to race. But she's one of many in the race. So it should be covered that way. Ali Owens is higher up then her. Many other drivers have been higher up then her. But first part of the race Danica was coveraged as the race. Danica missed the wreck that we can't show you because we are showing her driving. It's hurting the coverage. Same way all Jimmy all the time hurt ESPN end of last year.

Was that clouds in the sky??? is there a storm moving in???

NorCalFan said...

Jenna Fryer reports that NASCAR spokesperson says ARCA race must be over by 6:55pm

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks, I figured they had till 7PM.

MikeC said...

If this stays green, they'll be over by 6:55. But as I said, if they have 10 more minutes of caution time, they'll come out and say "the checkered flag will wave on lap ##"

Danica makes no mistakes on her own, that is the new indoctrination.

i i i i i i i i DP DP DP DP DP I I I I DP DP I I DP DP I I DP DP.......

boyd said...

If they can keep the crashes down (surely there's not as many cars to pile in) they just might finish this.
Oh, forget that Townley is still in it.

Sally said...

That's the ultimate irony...Kyle Busch complaining about TV concentrating coverage on just a few drivers!!! Maybe now he understands why so many fans are complaining about the 'racing' we see (not!) on TV! Whether it's JJ, Kyle, or whoever...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nelson Piquet is the new John West Townley?

Sally said...

Like her or not, that was an impressive save!

boyd said...

That was a pretty save. I don't think she got touched though.

Anonymous said...

CAR CONTROL!!!!! How many drivers just drive it through the grass and get back on the track without spinning out!!!!!! and she was back on the track, why the caution....need to make sure she can catch back up or something?????????

Sally said...

@boyd...so, the smoke between her car and Nelson Piquet's was from....?

PammH said...

DP did a great job on that save!

boyd said...

Sally, my bad.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, let's see how a mad Danica does.

Sally said...

@boyd, that's OK. We all do that sometimes. ;-)

Jonathan said...

DP sorry bout earlier but I have to chime in Danica is mad here she comes!!!!

Terri said...

Can DW get any further up Danica's butt?

Please.

The FOX camera-work has been a bit iffy today.

Ack. Shades of dSPN.

boyd said...

Bad wreck he's moving though.

MikeC said...

This caution will most likely cause a decision to shorten the race to a certain lap.

Karen said...

Just got radio chatter on DP with Tony, Jr.

boyd said...

Can anyone tell me where Danica is? Just kidding.

Anonymous said...

Great Job caremamen!! You finally caught a wreck as it happened and the production truck cut to it!

hmm did they start looking around for something else to show us once DP went to the back of the field?

Jonathan said...

I dont think it will get go short we still have an hour and half till the shootout and that wont start till 20-30 after im sure w all the pre race

MikeC said...

I have to give SPEED credit.....I thought for sure they'd show Danica making her way up through the field. And let me state, I have nothing against Danica....I think she'll make a fine driver. It's just the media overkill, which is obviously not her fault.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Word is RaceDay will start at 7PM, so they will probably call this race about 6:45PM or so.

Anonymous said...

Jimmy S. wasn't far off.....

MikeC said...

Jonathan, they have to grid the Shootout cars on pit lane, set up the stage, etc. and driver intros are scheduled for 7:30....and the Shootout takes priority, since it's on a main TV network.

boyd said...

6:45 would be about right. We have to have time to get a Danica comment or 10 about her first crash.
Oh, and maybe talk with the winner if time allows.

Anonymous said...

that's just sad when they will cut a live race short to make room for a pre race show.........

MikeC said...

It would take about 15 minutes to run the remaining laps under green. The window is definitely closing.

Anonymous said...

sorry...my cable doesn't have speed...who's leading?

Newracefan said...

The track has to get the ticket holders switched out too don't they or did Shootout ticker holders get Arca for free?

Jonathan said...

Mike true, that didnt even cross my mind. LOL this Arca race is funny every time they go to commercial when they come back its under caution. wonder whats the most laps run under green flag today??? Not many :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Looks like they will get this one in. RaceDay follows and then Bud Shoot Out on Fox at 8PM.

Anonymous said...

Just before the end of the race, and once our chosen one is at the back of the field, we will now be focusing on the highest running woman, who has been second or third all day!!!!

shoot me now

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was soo weird.

Anonymous said...

hmm look that, a driver into the grass and no spin, no mention of great car control though, ohh and no caution......guess his panties didn't get in a bind when it happened.

Sally said...

So, Danica is finally doing something worth watching, and the just now notice? Talk about confused!

Jonathan said...

yeah that was sweet! nascar would of thrown the caution no doubt

Jonathan said...

i saw a bird

boyd said...

I sense a caution.

Anonymous said...

DP is fighting to get back to the lead, when was she in the lead before?????? hype in on thing, over hyping is another, changing the facts of the race..... DW

Nan S said...

If this is an indication of how they will cover any race with Danica, then I won't be watching any more of them.

Soloman said...

Just got here, and I have to say... that replay they just showed of her cutting to the yellow line is why this is the Danica show.

She is already a the best of the ARCA drivers, and will be great to watch as she learns NASCAR.

Sally said...

I give her credit for that pass...took some balls.

Anonymous said...

Did DW just pea his pants or cum, I couldn't tell. I bet DW's wife says something to him tonight.....

Jonathan said...

one word WOW she can wheel it

Anonymous said...

ahhh that is how you get mention in this race, you have you to pass DP.

NorCalFan said...

New name for JWT. Tony Eury Jr calls him "Chicken Man".

JS said...

Rick, Phil, DW...ever heard of taking four tires? Maybe that caused her rally? And she's in a Hendrick car in ARCA.

And a tough break for Alli Owens there.

Soloman said...

There's the learning curve - she hung herself out away from the draft, but she can definitely wheel...

Nice 7th place in her first stock car run.

Sally said...

Nice missing the cars cross the finish line. Oy.

boyd said...

So glad I got see Danica win the ARCA race.
Oh, she was seventh?
Guess this experiment failed.
Just go back to Indy cars okay?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow! Think that one got some TV ratings? What did you all think of it?

Anonymous said...

great debut, you almost beat the guy who rides dirtbikes cleanly..........

Anonymous said...

great debut, you almost beat the guy who rides dirtbikes cleanly..........

Sally said...

Why can't TV understand that the payoff for watching the whole racd is seeing who crosses the finish line in what order? When you cut away before the race is done, you have just blown the entire race!

Jimbacca said...

Wasn't this Goats first car race?
Little confused on how there were two other incidents on the track that didn't cause a caution and one was a motor going.

At least he coverage improved after the initial mania went over. #5 handled it today. Great race. The other patrick put on a good show as well.

Vicky D said...

I hope Danica showed the doubters that she can drive a stock car.

Anonymous said...

I guess they didn't say they were going to back to basics with the race coverage did they... The coverage sucked

Soloman said...

Fun to watch.

I disagree with all those here griping about it being the 'all Danica' show. This crew still ran through the pack consistently, unlike what we have to deal with when ESPN calls a race.

Of course there was a lot of attention to Danica... she's the new driver and she's a TV draw. She'll do the sport some good.

Andrew said...

Loved the announcing team on this one; Phil Parsons is content to let DW be the larger-than-life one and call things as they are (unlike Chris Myers, who always seems to try to talk over DW). Great energy from the booth and you could definitely tell they were watching the track, not monitors.

However, the camerawork was terrible. It was like I was watching an ESPN race; far too many in-car cameras and missed wrecks.

And yet it was still exciting thanks to the booth.

MikeC said...

If there's time, they'll interview 2nd through 6th.

The Loose Wheel said...

Danica did a great job. I'm impressed.

Anonymous said...

I don't want to rip on her, but how is crashing once, making one move to cut low, and finishing 7th proof that she can drive a stock car. Same theory as if you win one fuel milage race you are the best Indy car driver I guess.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Folks, thanks for stopping by and talking about the ARCA race.

We have a new post up for both NASCAR RaceDay on SPEED and the Bud Shoot Out on Fox.

Thank you!

Sophia said...

camera worked stank EVEN at the end...no finish line cmeras either?wow. Who the heck is running SPEED CH..used to be able to county on them to show end of the race :( off to make dinner

Richard in N.C. said...

I sure am glad DW was in the booth so the king of the S&P'ers, Phil Parsons, had less opportunity to talk.

Soloman said...

Anon @ 6:59 PM -

Go back and watch her handle that spin through the grass. Go back and watch how tight that move in traffic really was.

She can handle those cars very well for a rookie. There are cup drivers that would have done worse in both instances.

She looked like a natural, and her enthusiasm in that interview with Wendy shows that she's eager to learn.

Anonymous said...

I was very disappointed with the camera work today. Too much Danica, too much in-car, too many missed wrecks & passes.

The booth was wonderful as usual.
The race was a wreckfest as usual.
