Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series In Las Vegas (2PM - FOX)

The good news is that the weather has cleared and it is going to be a beautiful day in the Las Vegas area. The bad news is that the rematch of USA vs. Canada in Olympic hockey is on NBC up against the NASCAR race.

The NASCAR on FOX team has been having a hit or miss season. They missed in Daytona but rebounded in California. This week, Darrell Waltrip has been on SPEED many times covering practice, qualifying and as a panelist on the Trackside show. His behavior had been nothing short of erratic.

On Trackside, Jeff Hammond actually changed chairs to sit next to Waltrip and could be seen trying to quiet him down while fellow panelists tried to ask questions of guest Danica Patrick. When Juan Montoya arrived as the next guest, Walrip again talked constantly.

Mike Joy is a well known commodity in the NASCAR world. He can deliver stirring play-by-play and knows how to tell the stories unfolding on the track. Joy's booth partner Larry McReynolds provides information on race strategy and crew chief issues. It is left up to Waltrip to deal with the driver topics and call the replays.

Waltrip will begin the day in the Hollywood Hotel with Hammond and host Chris Myers. This week, the Slice of Pizzi feature continues with driver interviews conducted in an embarrassing fashion for the sake of comedy. The pre-race show has been struggling and the race today really needs a strong lead-in.

The FOX Director is a veteran, but the struggle between showing the field and using in-car cameras has been rough. Normally, TV waits until the field gets strung-out to use the in-cars in order not to miss any incidents or key passes. FOX has been going early to the in-cars and has been forced to replay a lot of action for the TV viewers.

Joy has been handling a big commercial and promo load of show elements that he reads from the booth. That has taken away from his commentary duties. It should be interesting to see if the FOX movie promos and the in-race videos continue. While the Digger presence is less, the commercial elements inserted into the races have been distracting this season.

The pit road reporters Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren are going to be key today. Action at Vegas happens quickly and often involves more than one car. Information needs to be passed along and interviews conducted with drivers out of the race. There may be more than a few.

In a Sunday morning update, The NASCAR Insiders passed along from the track that NASCAR was putting pressure on the "start and park" cars to stay on the track and even do pit stops. You may remember that Dave Blaney's S&P car was taken last week after the race with NASCAR claiming it was a "routine inspection." See if FOX addresses this topic during the pre-race or the live race telecast.

The pre-race show begins at 2PM and the green flag flies at 3:16PM. The telecast is scheduled to run until 6:30PM ET. This post will serve to host your comments during the NASCAR on FOX broadcast of the Sprint Cup Series event from Las Vegas.

So how many laps to a caution to make sure the Earnhardt gets the lucky dog?

Anonymous said...

OVERTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

USA USA USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry FOX....

GinaV24 said...

Sorry, Jonathan --- just flippin back and forth to the game.

Jonathan said...

not me im not watching i could care less im glad the olypics are over after this so good get your fix now cause its gone after today

GinaV24 said...

Plus, Fox is NOT doing anything to hold my interest in this race.

Garry said...

What's the pit window for tires and fuel? If NASCAR throws a mystery caution, they'll want to make sure "star" drivers won't run out of fuel. That's IF there is a conspiracy...

Jonathan said...

:) sorry just wanted to watch the end of this upstairs dont mind me.

The Loose Wheel said...

53-59 laps on fuel

GinaV24 said...

True, Jonathan, for me, its done once the hockey is over.

Jonathan said...

gina i know fox sucks today but i have hotpass I can hear JR hes pissed

MikeC said...

It's almost like both NASCAR and Fox have mailed today in, knowing an overwhelming majority of people are tuned into NBC and the gold medal hockey game.

GinaV24 said...

Going to have green flag stops soon. The 24 is looking at pit road -- this could be a fuel mileage race.

Andrew said...

Where has this Jeff Gordon been since the mid-90s?

Garry said...

Jonathan: How bad is the coverage of a NASCAR race, when race fans on this blog site watch hockey? Believe me, I wish I wasn't even blogging, but....

GinaV24 said...

I use trackpass, too, Jonathan since Fox just doesn't give me enough info to know what is going on with my driver, so I do know what you mean.

why is Jr pissed?

Garry said...

Thanks, David. Soooo, can we expect a "caution" with 50 to go?

Jonathan said...

I dont care how bad the coverage is im still a nascar die hard true and through so. This is an exciting hockey game but when Nascars on nothing else gets my attention unless a hot supermodel was to come in the room then ok Id make an exception lol

GinaV24 said...

Andrew - as long as he's here today, that's all that matters to me.

Since 99, different crew chiefs, lots of car changes, lot of NASCAR rule changes, the stupid chase -- shall I go on?

Garry said...

GinaV24: I think Jr. is pissed because he signed up to a team as an R&D car.

Delenn said...

@Jonathan. We have Kim Kardashian. Not quite a hot supermodel I know...

Haus14 said...

Have been watching most of the race, but with the advent of technology (Trackpass) i can watch the hockey game and watch the race...

Anonymous said...

Jr. has had a couple of expensive weekends for his nationwide teams.

MikeC said...

This race reminds me of a race from the late 90s, when they'd just let the race play itself out naturally.

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan - you're SUCH a guy! LOL

I've been a diehard fan for years, but following races flag to flag has become more difficult since I feel like I'm not getting the kind of coverage every Sunday that makes me want to watch.

The Loose Wheel said...

Garry, I'm hoping if a caution comes out it wont be for debris. I hate manufactured racing and really wish the conspiracy would die completely.

No one is really talking debris or anything, Shrub said he locked up the rears getting to pit road on his penalty stop. Apologized to the team.

Jr just sounds frustrated with the handle (whats new?)

Haus14 said...

What happened to Al Michaels??? Was he only contracted for the two intermissions?

Jonathan said...

Gina I know your a Gordon fan like im a Jr fan but I like Gordon as well, think Gordon and Jr should be in the same shop and let Martin and JJ share info. Just my opinon what do u think. I have a feeling Gordon isnt doing as well cause hes in the same shop as JJ and is now being compared to JJ. Do you get what im saying and what do you think?

MikeC said...

I want to see again if we get a 10% to go commercial break. If so, it would have to come with 26-27 laps remaining.

Sally said...

Same for me, Gina. I used to rush home from work on friday to catch practice, arranged my entire weekend around the races. Now, I barely watch anything but the racdes anymore. and, I find myslef wandering around doing things like laundry and cleaning instead of being rivited to my TV. Just not the same.

GinaV24 said...

oooohhhh, you don't really think that's true that Jr is running the R&D car, do you?

Of course, if the pays the same, he's got a huge fan base and sells lots of souvenirs, he can concentrate on his N'wide teams and HMS gets the $ -- isn't that a win win situation?

OSBORNK said...

I'm not a Hockey fan but close competition beats follow the leader any day.

Jonathan said...

i know hes winning today but he hasent won like he did back a few years ago

Anonymous said...

Full screen Jeff Hammond under green????
Shades of old espn!!!!!!

Andrew said...

Caution! Conway saves the race!

The Loose Wheel said...

I still re-arrange my stuff around NASCAR still.

Conway, wall. Extenze gets tv time with 30 to go.

Least its a kind of legit caution. Jr staying out for a wave around hopefully. Kyle Busch too.

Anonymous said...

Kevin Conway #37 is the new John Wes Townley in the Cup Series.

GinaV24 said...

You bet, Jonathan, I hear you. My brother is a JJ fan so it just kills me cuz I have to be nice about it even when I want to swear a lot.

I'd be happy to have them put the 5 and 24 together in the same shop.

The Loose Wheel said...

Boy that is 3 times Gordon has slid quite a ways in that pit box. Once over the line. Hopefully they don't have to come back in

Jonathan said...

I dont know I still watch everything and have been like that since 05. took me a year to learn the sport in 04 but once I did I couldnt get enough and still cant get enough but do know like you all do the coverage from Fox hasent been nothing like it has been before read my earlier posts to understandwhat im saying... Espn sucked the past 3 years but so far the Nationwide races have been great but untill ESPN gets there half of the races we wont know till then cause the Nationwide races are no indication of what were going to get w the cup broadcast as is evident from last year. Still though I dont miss much and if I do its the single car qualifying. Call me crazy but as the commercials say everything else is just a game :)

Richard in N.C. said...

As an old fan, TV is still a big improvement over years ago when following NASCAR meant listening to it on the radio and what the newspaper "gods" deemed appropriate to report. I find the glass still much more than half full.

The Loose Wheel said...

I'm still not a fan of having 2 separate shops. I think that fuels even more the idea of an R&D team because then you wonder, Are the best guys in the 24/48 stable? Why can't we get the same results if we are all the same group. Perhaps its a depth issue, the 24, 48, and 5 have so many great guys that you start to get to the bottom of your depth chart with the 88.

Separating NW and Cup stuff is a great idea, but having your Cup teams in different shops?

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan, he hasn't won yet and I can't count my chickens until he is first under the checkers, especially NOT with the 48 so close behind.

It makes my stomach hurt.

Sally- yes, that's the same with me.

The Loose Wheel said...

88, 99, 47, 00, 78, 18, 11, 98, 39 and 56 all wave arounds

Daly Planet Editor said...

Just for the record, the track has confirmed a sellout.

Take that, Gillian Zucker!

Garry said...

Nah, I was just kidding about the R & D stuff. I'm a Ford fan, so I'm pulling for Kenseth for a couple of reasons: One is that I'm a Ford fan. Two is , and I'm not trying to upset anyone here, if Jimmie wins again, people get put off by the same old same old. Ratings suffer for multiple reasons, but I'm a big believer in if you have candy every day, it gets stale.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone have Sirius / XM and listen to the NASCAR channel regularly? The program hosts have been very critical and defensive as of late. Alienating alot of callers. Particularly Chocolate Myers.

Jonathan said...

COME ON GORDON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Sellout ?? I see alot of turn four seats painted with no fans. They apparently did not sell these. It's all how you spin it.

OSBORNK said...

Canada Won!

The Loose Wheel said...

Anon, we have talked about that a bunch today. Those are not seats and if they are the fact that everything around them is full and they are empty means they were never for sale to start with

HT Guru said...

congratulations Canada - now back to the race

GinaV24 said...

David, yeah, that's a question that has to be asked. After all, if the 24 and 48 share everything, how is is that the 48 can just be so darn good every week. And it just kills me.

Plus the 5 has done well, it's only been Jr that hasn't been able to run the same.

If you hear me start screaming it will be because the daggone 48 beat my guy again.

OSBORNK said...

I went to a "sold out" night race at Bristol and I was surrounded by empty seats.

OSBORNK said...

I went to a "sold out" night race at Bristol and I was surrounded by empty seats.

Richard in N.C. said...

Of course a sellout means all the tickets were sold - to someone - not that they were all used - and Darth Bruton is constantly politicing for a 2nd Vegas date.

Charlie said...

This is working out good for the camera guys. They love just showing two cars or less on the screen.

Anonymous said...

NASCAR just got a break - hockey game over.

Sally said...

Give away promo seats are counted as 'sold' to fill the stands. but it's still tons better than fontana last week!

Delenn said...

@David They are not empty seats. They are chock full of fans, come dressed in fancy dress as empty seats. See how committed Nascar fans really are!!

GinaV24 said...

Garry, well, now I know NOT to take you seriously! LOL

I have a siris radio and I've been very disturbed with what I hear for NASCAR coverage. I don't think it's a good idea to abuse your customers, the fans, the way they do. I don't listen as much as I did and when my renewal comes up, I may not bother.

Andrew said...

You should NOT be going to commercial with 22 laps to go!

The Loose Wheel said...

Are you for real? A commercial now?!

I guess the 10% or less theory IS correct!

Anonymous said...

Last Commercial break?

GinaV24 said...

Agggh, 2 tires vs 4, I think I may cry

Martin Vincent said...

22 laps, close to 10% left to go,... commercial! Never mind that battle for the lead!

Anonymous said...

WOW MASSIVE FAIL FOX, COMMERCIAL IN THE MIDDLE OF BATTLE FOR LEAD WITH 20 to go! Never thought I'd be saying this, but give me ESPN

Sally said...

So, do we see that pass for the lead on replay?

Anonymous said...

In reference to the Sirius gig - yes all the hosts are NASCAR shills. They work for MRN and thus ISC. It all went downhill with the loss of David Poole.

The Loose Wheel said...

I just think if they were true empty seats, then they would have scattered fans in them like Charlotte does in 3-4. Usually if they are completely empty, security is keeping the people out because they are not open seats to use.

Its not as if they are great seats anyways

Sally said...

...or just miss hard racing for it?

Martin Vincent said...

And full-screen promos. Great!

PammH said...

And we miss it while they are showing Digger...

Anonymous said...

Not good for NASCAR if JJ keeps winning.

Sally said...

So...on replay...after going to commercial. Disgusting. The only real battle for the lead all day.

Garry said...

An Olympic update? Methinks FOX staff reads this blog. Jimmie going for the lead, and we go to commercial? Now I type with an F: WTF?
Sorry, JD. But that was mindnumbingly stupid.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Officially the worst FOX telecast in the three years of this blog.

The Loose Wheel said...

Im not a Jeff Gordon fan but this makes me want to cry for him. He has had the best car all day and to lose it like this possibly!? Just heart-shattering

GinaV24 said...

I am now banging my head against my computer

Anonymous said...

Once again - all the Hendrick cars in the front - except the #88.

Sally said...

Sorry Gina. I feel for you!

The Loose Wheel said...

No JD, the Phoenix race a couple years ago that was bumped to FX was their worst race ever.

this makes the top 5 list though.

Anonymous said...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Big props to Canada....GREAT GAME...

The Loose Wheel said...

Bliss passes the 26, parks. Nothing left to gain. Hope they stay in the top 35.

Anonymous said...

Mike Joy says one thing, DW says another.

Garry said...

Well, if you are a fan of commercials, it's a banner day for you. David Hill must think this is The Super Bowl. You watch the game for the commercials.LOL

GinaV24 said...

Oh guys, I enjoyed blogging with all of you today, but I just can't watch the end of this.

Damn, I that the 48. makes me sick to my stomach.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot's boy Ambrose gonna get a finish it looks like. 14th aint great but at least its not in the garage

Anonymous said...

Well, with 10 laps to go FOX is finally trying to sort through the mess.

Sally said...

With JJ running so well this early in the season, do you think it's going to affect the ratings?

GinaV24 said...

that would be "hate" the 48

terri said...

So FOX goes to commercial just as everyone can see there's going to be a pass for the lead.

What did they do in the off-season - watch all of dSPN's tapes?

Unbelieveable.

The Loose Wheel said...

LOL how backwards is this?! They go through the field with 10 to go?! Oy vey this is a joke!!!!!

Sally said...

This is the first 'thru the field' all day, isn't it? Pathetic.

GinaV24 said...

Well, Sally, I know it turns ME off.

I have tickets for Martinsville at the end of March. Last year it was cold and drizzle there. It's making me re-think whether or not it is worth the money to actually go.

Anonymous said...

JJ - ho hum zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Sally said...

Gina, I didn't renew my season tickets for Bristol this year. NEVER thought I'd do that!

The Loose Wheel said...

DO WORK JOEY!!!! GET YOU 2 TOP 5'S IN A ROW!!

Anonymous said...

Why does Steve Letarte still have a job?

GinaV24 said...

Sally, I can understand that. Bristol hasn't been the same since the Chase and the repaving.

Sally said...

They talk about good racing farther back...and show the 48 all by himself. again.

The Loose Wheel said...

Joey is showing what he has now finally. Good to see.

Sorry Gina.

JD, there is nothing to say except what a mess

The Loose Wheel said...

PRISM finishes their first race without a sponsor in 29th

Sally said...

Exactly, Gina. It started going downhill with the crapshoot, and the repaving killed it. What a shame. the last couple years the race would start and you could feel the electricity in the crowd. In less than 100 laps, you could feel the excitement drain out of the whole place.

GinaV24 said...

Jeff is one class act with what he just said to his team on the radio.

Told them what a great job they did today even when they lost.

I know there are a lot of people out there who don't like Gordon, but the reason I do is because win or lose, he's always a professional and a gentlemen.

OK, I'll get off my personal soapbx now.

The floating heads are gone. What is the point of a double video box if FOX still ignores the back half of the field? There were still a dozen cars coming to the line and we get a close up of Chad in 1 boz and an in-car of Jimmie in the other.

Garry said...

All time winner on 1.5 tracks.I don't know if I would want that on my resume. That's like saying vanilla is the best flavor in the world. Yes, that is a Freudian slip. Thanks, JD, and to everyone for chatting. Have a safe day!

Richard in N.C. said...

Like them or not, JJ and Chad are really good. More and more JJ reminds me of the Silver Fox. The fact JJ is often deemed to be boring says more to me about how sloppy much of the media is than about JJ.

GinaV24 said...

buschseries - sometimes I ask myself that question, too. They run the whole darn race and can't get it right at the end when it matters most.

Sorry, I'm unimpressed with Fox and obviously quite mad about the finish.

It was good talking with you all. Hope the drivers you were rooting for all did well.

Obviously I won't be watching the post-race coverage

The Loose Wheel said...

Richard in NC, Im TOTALLY with you on that JJ summary.

I was happy to see Dave Blaney run all the laps in a white car.

Just to give you my perspectives of this 2010 NASCAR year, I’m not as much excited as a fan of NASCAR on Fox as last year. I don’t know about the other networks yet. The entertainment value of the production is not like before. However, what ever network covers NASCAR I will be loyal because there is no other sport like it! I will continue to support it because I wouldn’t want the sport to fail.
