Live Blogging "NASCAR RaceDay" (SPEED - 5PM)
There has been an added focus on the RaceDay program recently. Darrell Waltrip announced that he was going to be joining the show, replacing Kyle Petty during the six summer TNT races.
This season Jimmy Spencer was removed from the panel and replaced by Petty. That left John Roberts and Kenny Wallace as the remaining original members. The show's two reporters, Hermie Sadler and Wendy Venturini, are also back. Rutledge Wood sometimes makes appearances depending on his assignments for the weekend.
Petty has changed the dynamic of the program with his plain-spoken style and his willingness to address any kind of topic. This has pushed Kenny Wallace to up his game. The old antics of the Wallace and Spencer duo are no longer the "in thing."
Venturini has teamed with Sadler to offer a very effective news presence for the program from inside the track. Recently, a new camera position was added that features these two standing behind a podium-style table. My feeling is that this takes away from the very feel of the original program that put TV viewers where they could not go. That being the the NASCAR garage and starting grid.
John Roberts has gotten a lot of attention this season with his dramatic change in hair color from brown to gray. Roberts advises that he is fine and just decided to stop coloring his hair for TV. Roberts has a smile on his face this season simply because he does not have to clean-up for Spencer anymore. No longer do apologies have to be made on a regular basis. Roberts certainly had plenty of practice at that.
RaceDay expanded to the two-hour format years ago, but that was based on adding prepared features like Venturini's Real Deal to the mix. This season, that feature was dropped and RaceDay is using more NASCAR Media Group features that have lots of neat editing, but little personality.
Sometimes, it looks odd to switch between the outside set with those panelists and the inside set where Sadler and Venturini stand awkwardly behind the fake table. This has been especially tough when conversations are flowing between the five primary on-air personalities.
In just a short while, TNT will begin to offer a ninety-minute pre-race show that will overlap RaceDay. Ironically, it will be Kyle Petty providing the competition. Without featuring Venturini and Sadler out among the drivers and fans for the entire show, RaceDay may have to rely on Waltrip and Wallace to keep viewers tuned into SPEED.
We are going to be live blogging RaceDay from Darlington. If this post gets a good response, we will consider doing this more often. Good opening. Like what KP said about The Lady being it's own hall of fame.
Nice interview with Kyle Busch from Wendy!
And I didn't even mute it!
Lovin' this KP interview too!
Happily pleased with the features today. good first 30 minutes! Nice Pearson piece with KP.
Tell ya what, this is a daggone great RaceDay today!
Someone got the word to Kenny Wallace to tone it down. Makes a lot of difference.
Sorry if I'm nitpicking JD, but I recall TNT's press release saying that their pre-race show would be only 60 minutes long this year (I could be wrong; there's a one thousandth time for everything).
Thank you for your blog.
Steve, they are still talking about one or two shows. The actual pre-race show will be an hour.
Trust me, nothing would be better than getting all that worked out.
Steve you are correct. Lindsey Czarniak(appologize for spelling) will host Countdown to Green and it will be 60 minutes. Atleast that was what they put in the release announcing Adam Alexander as PxP man.
Seeing tweets Darlington may start on SPEED if baseball is still on...
Any news?
Anon 5:43. earlier Fox announced that the game would move to FX and Nascar would start as scheduled.
KP sounds sick-like he's got a cold or something.
That may have been the best 1 hour of Race Day in 2 years! Very enjoyable.
Safe to say baseball will still be on. Rain delay at Fenway Park.
Baseball has to move to FX, but this might eliminate the Hollywood Hotel in much of the country since Yankees/Red Sox is, as always, the prime game.
RT @MLBONFOX If game goes past 7:30 PM, it'll remain on FOX & the network will join #NASCAR in progress when it's over
Uhhh . ..
@yankeeswfan @jimmytraina If the game goes past 7:30 PM, it'll remain on FOX & the network will join NASCAR in progress when it's over #mlb

I wish NASCAR still had a crown jewel program like they used to with the Winston Million.
Brad,
That is correct. Marc Fein is off on the NBA network now. Linsday will host the hour pre-show.
What we are waiting to see is if TNT will do a pre-pre-race show as they have in the past.
Right now everyone is being cagey.
Baseball games (no matter where) are going to move to FX.
On the live blog we will follow what FOX does before and what FOX does after the race.
Post-race tonight is Supercross from Las Vegas. If they interrupt that it will hit the fan.
Remember folks, they are making those decisions right now as we are talking about it.
Live sports TV can often be nuts!
@JD
So is the @MLBONFOX twitter account just making stuff up to infuriate the largest media market in the country?
Ok . . .Kenny Albert says that the Yankees/Red Sox will not resume on FOX and are moving directly to FX at 6:20 p.m. ET.
I don't know what happend at Speed this week but I have not enjoyed a Race Day (even in person) as much as this one in a long long time!
No, the NASCAR TV contract with FOX mandates that from the green flag to the checkers if shown live on FOX nationwide.
Any other live sport is moving. Period.
FOX exec David Hill has been creative in his decision making recently.
Don't see too much wiggle room in this scenario.
I think a reason why this week's show is so good might be because of the venue. There's not a more back to the basics track and fanbase than Darlington. Hopefully it translates over to the flagship in about an hour.
I love Kenny, but having him not yell at us for two hours is worth its weight in gold.
Only seen a few parts of RD, but it looks good!
Loved the Pearson piece!
Ok. I'm doing something I haven't done in a while. Watching Race Day. Still have it on season pass I guess hoping something would change.
Well, based on the comments on TDP & Twitter decided to give it a try.
Glad I did.
Hope this is a good omen.
All the folks that skip RD have missed a golden nugget here today! Bravo..
Kudos to JD for admitting they dropped the ball with HOF. Really validates what Yeley said a couple years ago.
This really has been a great RaceDay
With 25 minutes left, I feel confident in voting this the best Race Day ever. Heck of a job today!
Great JD Gibbs interview.
I agree with brad. Best. RaceDay. Ever.
I have a theory, there was alot less Roberts/Petty/Wallace featured today, therefore Kenny could not really run wild as usual. This mix worked.
Glad I tuned in, going to tune out for a good 25 minutes of FOX's pre-race. Unless they decide to interview some of the mom's at the track...that'd be pretty cool
The live race blog is up folks, just head back to the main page to join us.
Thanks for the RaceDay comments, what a show to pick!
