Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Daytona (6:30PM - TNT)
Here we go with TNT's biggest race of the year. Daytona under the lights starts with a one-hour pre-race Countdown to Green show.
Lindsay Czarniak will host with Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds alongside on the TNT "infield rig." The big feature is one on the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. Folks who have seen it say that it really does a lot to put his contributions to the sport in a very human perspective. The live interview on the set is Tony Stewart. Wally's World will be back with a track description.
Upstairs to call the race will be Adam Alexander, Wally Dallenbach Jr. and Petty. On pit road are Ralph Sheheen, Marty Snider, Matty Yocum and Phil Parsons.
This is the Wide Open coverage that TNT has been tweaking for years. It features commercials in a video box while the racing continues on the screen. In return, there are some added sponsor logos and animation elements. It works, but some folks really hate it because of the differences.
TNT will once again offer RaceBuddy. Jim Noble is the RaceBuddy pit road reporter and he has been doing a great job with interviews and updates. This online free application features multiple cameras and a social media stream for chat.
3D TV is on the way and TNT will originate two streams of 3D content for this race. DirecTV, NASCAR.com and several major cable TV providers will offer this content free of charge. The only drawback is that viewers must have a 3D capable computer monitor or TV. Of course, you have to wear the glasses!
This post will offer you an opportunity to offer comments on the TNT coverage. To add your comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for stopping by.

I'm going to guess the #13 and #66 are the only S&P teams tonight.
Definitely don't need rain - don't know what to do with DVR (sigh) got to work tomorrow so no late nights for moi!
When will the race be tomorrow? 1pm eastern?
RB video up.
Wow after watching RD I realize how much I hate these marathon pre-race shows!
MV, I take the 66 as the only one. 13 probably has funding, 71 is a toss up
Should the Coke Zero 400 be rained out today, then it will be rescheduled for tomorrow at noon (ET).
@David - Unless #13 has added races to its initial schedule, the Geico sponsorship doesn't include this race.
According to the entry list, #71 has TaxSlayer on the car, which means it should run to the finish.
Lindsey Czarniak has been a nice choice to take over the hosting duties for TNT.
You know NASCAR will wait until way late to call it.
Remember that year we ran it soo late? I was there and folks were sound asleep in the grandstands as the cars came by.
Got home like 6AM....
MV, they also missed a couple races, if any of those were on their schedule maybe they shift resources?
@David - Charlotte is the only scheduled race they missed. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Really raining in Daytona right now. That makes a 2 hour track dry, right?
It stopped raining for a little while but it has started again per Racebuddy.
NASCAR reporters now saying they lost the track. Long jet dryer session coming.
If you have laundry, now is the time.
Has TNT even mentioned on air that it's raining and the start will be delayed?
RaceBuddy has. Also, the concert their going to show in a few minutes is taped... Pulling a Fox on us.
Not a Fox. They said the concert had already happened.
Noble was pretty blunt, looks like the track is lost. the highway is soaked so thats not a good omen.
-sigh- looking at a 9 pm start time if it's a typical drying session
David,
No telecast window issue because this is cable TV.
Only have to run halfway and they do NOT want to race tomorrow.
LOL totally messed up Blaney's intro. "Prius motorsports" something er other
Yeley too. sounded like JG Yeley
Yeah JD this is true but its no fun to just try and get to half way and call it either.
Lindsay really doing quite well in the infield host role I must say
Best Pride of Nascar feature of the year by far.
I was there in 2004 when they started this race at 10pm EST, it was crazy, leaving around 2am, it happened again the next year, I see tonight being the same deal. There's clearly precedent
Man, that was a long drive home for me! I got back just before the sun came up.
OK, so I'm too cheap for a hotel!
WxChl FutureCast shows the rain clearing up til about 10pm edt then raining hard thru midnight...
uhh cp43 thats a bad sign then. Backstretch is totally lost, I figure earliest start time we'll see is 9 pm. Can we do 80 laps in an hour?
MRN says the jet dryers are out, but the pit lane is still real wet.
Did that blond fan just flash Jim Noble as he was setting up to interview Joey?
When you see drivers walking under umbrellas, the race probably won't get started by 9.
Ms Kyle Busch says two hour delay has been told to the drivers.
Ugh....
Ugh,I see there are still umbrellas out on pit road -
On Racebuddy, they show the dryers being taken off the track.
A little disappointed that TNT is avoiding telling us this race won't start for a looooong time...:(
Race Control just called the jet dryers off the track because too much rain is coming down.
Bummer!
i'll be back in 2 hours to check progress but i think we will all have to get together tomorrow. have a great night either way!
boy I am glad I'm watching this on TV from the comfort of my living room -- at least I can be comfortable -- I know Nascar wants to get these races in but it isn't helpful to the fans to have to sit around for hours waiting for them to call it. We waited for 3 hrs in a driving rain storm at Darlington one year -- NO updates from the track at all - we were actually calling people in NJ on our cell phones to ask what they were saying on TV -- we drove 1300 miles that weekend and never saw the race - we had to get back so we listened to it on my Sirius radio feed driving back.
Lindsay is doing a nice job and I am enjoying Racebuddy's feed.
What are the contractual obligations to get the Opening Ceremonies on tonight instead of later?
Dang couldn't find any closer F-18's.
I am sure there is an AFB closer then CA
Great National Anthem and honoring of great soldiers!
cp43
Darius is performing @ A Capitol Fourth tomorrow in DC, so this is probably good for him to do it now.
From @RyanMcGeeESPN: My wife, a singer, can tell in 3 notes if someone's going to trip over the end of the anthem. She goes "Uh oh". She did tonight. #NASCAR
Liking Lindsay & Larry doing the pre-race. Enjoying RB's aerial views of the track too. I don't think TNT will be doing any updates on the weather so viewers won't be changing the channel.
Drivers have been sent back to the Rv's. Not a good sign.
Expect 9PM at earliest.
I think someone should tell Jenna Fryer it rains during the day too in Cent FL. I mean having this race during the day would be absolutely horrid.
I've been to both Day and Night races here and it's more comfortable at night.
MRN just bailed until 8:30 ET. WxChnl forecast for tomorrow is still more showers & thundershowers. 50-60%.
Maybe the old track doesn't want herself to be re-paved...
I would be nervous running the jet dryers over this pavement!
So, 8:30PM will be the next official update.
David
that is probably true, but that Flood 2 years back, didn't help matters any.
Jennifer-I agree w/you. Track under water for a long period of time didn't help matters at all. I was shocked at the pics I found on line!
No Jennifer it didn't, I think it actually settled that patch even worse making that launch point that much worse.
Not looking overly forward to the new surface for awhile. Still going to be a handling track though since the corner radius is still tighter than Talladega =)
TNT dancing around weather issues. I wonder if that is a NASCAR mandate?
Wow, David, I'd never thought of that.
I saw the pix when they put that tunnel in. They basically just slit the track vertically over where they wanted the tunnel.
I always wondered what effects that might cause. Never thought it would launch the cars and damage the track where they land.
Disappointed in bogus ignoring of timeline for rain/race issues on TNT. NASCAR wonder's why ratings are down? This is another reason... their hidden secrecy.
Somebody turn the infield microphone off while the Jet dryers go by please.
david,
they are not jet drying the tunnel!
Anon 7:55PM,
Always been NASCAR's way to ignore TV and play out the fake scenarios for the fans in the stands.
The print reporters yell about it all the time.
The jet dryers are getting into Lindsey's & Larry's mic.
The audio guy needs to put in the vuvuzeala filter...
JD, they epoxied and concreted the patch. Should hold.
Yeah, the NASCAR TV partners are the best at playing "hold the audience" when it comes to weather delays.
I've been with the coverage from the start--why no "official" Nascar rep detailing the evenings timelines for the viewers---save the hype-we are here---let's be bigtime-not minor league
Good Yeley interview by RaceBuddy!!!!
David,
Lighten up there dude. Did you see Diandra's article today about the real problem with Daytona being the jet dryers?
We don't expect you to be Mr. Answer Man for us....relax.
They never show up until they make a decision! Imagine that!
Remember how we yelled and screamed before Brian and Lesa finally showed up at Daytona after potholegate?
I still get grief about that.
Drivers being interviewed out of firesuits is NOT a good sign...:(
wow JJ and I have something in common, we were both fans of Davey Allison.
Why didn't the director give equal face time to all six of the MOH recipients??
My great great grandfather was a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient ... and it's disappointing when they don't get the recognition they deserve ...
Paging Darby or Pemberton, paging Darby or Pemberton!
Twitter question to Kyle Petty:
@Starteddy: How do you come up with stuff to say when you need to fill up air time like this?
KP: I have a BS degree! LMAO
tia,
From the look of it he only had one camera for close-ups. He needed a second.
Fundamental mistake of equipment allocation that production cannot cover.
JD, didn't see it. I think she talked about it in Feb though too on SIRIUS.
I have faith in the pavement, just not in that huge dip called the turn 1 drive through tunnel ;)
tia-RB did an AWESOME job w/detailing why all of those guys were chosen. It was just excellent..glad I listened to it.
Kyle has a great sense of humor -- I think having a BS degree is mandatory for all NASCAR broadcasters. LOL
They're still interviewing drivers from the motorcoach lot. That's a sign we're quite aways away from the green flag.
There are patches of dry appearing on the track, but the big threat is another shower.
For those of us who live on the East Coast of Florida, this is every day all summer long.
I would love to go to noon ET for a start.
Turns drying pretty quick per officials channel but talking more weather 2 hours out it seems
bobpockrass: The radar. If rain stays away and track dries quickly, could start 9:30ish
Can someone tell Larry McReynolds there are 2 "R" in February?... It's not Fe-boo-ary.
Noble seems to agree. Figures another hour to dry
I'm going to be optimistic and say we are another 45 minutes away from having engines fired!!
getting all 43 cars out there would be about the fastest way to get this place dry. 1-2 is totally dry
MV-how about library?? Lie-bury.. Folks are who they they are-don't pick so much. jmo, but I'm grumpy cuz the race is delayed.
I like Jim Noble. Good weather report and best summary of the night: "I don't know."
OK thats it not Darius again - time to turn it all off and see what happens - hopefully tomorrow.....
Backstretch is one pass away from being dry. Trying to focus on the exit of 4 and against the wall
Let the DVR run Mary. The reporters are saying 9:30'ish if no more rain falls.
MRN came on and is leaving the air again until 9p.m. Eastern.
MRN is back. Says the track is looking good but pit road is still bad.
MRN is now bailing to local stations, not to return until 9pm ET.
@PammH - If it was just one word he mispronounced, I might not be so picky. I don't know where he got extr-ee instead of extr-ah, but when I learned English as a second language (French is my first), I made an effort to learn to use it and pronounce it the right way. Maybe I am being picky (and a bit grumpy too), but that's just my opinion. It's hot as hell up here in Canada, I wish it would rain here and clear up in Florida.
This coverage is cool for those working on the set--those watching-not so much--this blows as much as the blow-dryers....somebody help us...
As long as Lindsay is on I will keep watching TNT!
Drivers will be called to their cars before 9:30PM according to Elliott Sadler.
I swear Daytona has some of the loudest driers around. We had tickets to the first few night races, and at race end they fired them up -- fans couldn't get out of the stands fast enough.
Martin
No offense, but the people of the South have there own language and pronounce things differently. It's just the way he was raised in Alabama.
How cool would it be to be able to drive a layback truck around the high banking of Daytona?
What d'ya figure they're running out there, 60 mph? 70?
@Martin--I know a lot of people who are excellent speakers who have trouble with February so it's not just Larry Mac. One of my favorite talk show hosts every day for February when he gives the date he always says it very slowly because it trips him up sometimes to make sure he gets both r's in there. There are a few words that trip people up regardless of how well or "poorly" they speak.
I agree Pam.
cp43
I was told you have to do at least 80, to stay up on the banking. That was from a track tour in 1994.
Still concerned with high against the wall from 3-4 to front stretch. Said 9:30 maybe 9:15 they can get going.
giving us the officials channel for trackpass is the best idea ever
DVR on till 4.45am our time LOL
You just might need it!
Great job drying the track, really amazed on a humid night.
Martin, You just don't understand Hillbilly. Most of what he says is normal talk here in the mountains. We don't have accents, you do. Some of the northern dialects drive us nuts. Boston, Northern Minnesota,Bronx and many other accents are worse to our ears. We just accept the differences in language and continue to talk funny down here.
My apologies, didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. I do occasionally trip on the "th" sound that is non-existent in French.
My bad! :(
Jennifer,
I heard that same story about a minimum speed on the banking when I was growing up. Yet we routinely see safety trucks et al parked up there during the cleanup after an incident.
Not sure what the discrepancy there is...
I agree JD. Very impressive. I don't think we ever 100% lost the track, just that it was pretty damp which helps some. How you liking the concrete pit road idea for next year now JD? Should dry faster so we won't be waiting on it like tonight. Personally I'd like to see a concrete apron too
OK, track ready for a 9:30PM restart. Heaters now running on cars and drivers returning shortly after 9PM to pit road.
Martin
No biggie, all of us have different things that irritate us.
For me it's the sound of Jet Dryers.
Goodness I feel like I'm at the track.
@Jennifer - I believe 80 is correct. Went to the Talladega Hall of Fame and a nice old lady named Betty Carlan told me the same thing when BMW brought some of their cars to the track. Betty said she scared one of the BMW reps driving one of their cars high up the banking.
On Racebuddy, they're taking the covers off of the cars wiping them down.
I'll get the scoop on pit road specifics Tuesday.
That would be a ton of concrete if it was the entire thing and not just the pit stalls.
No word on paving more of the current grass on the backstretch.
That has to happen.
Well, the jet dryer tow vehicles are hugging the wall, and doing nowhere near 80.
MV-if you want to hear where I'm coming from-check this link. It will explain why I give a pass to LarryMac! http://www.michigannative.com/ma_home.shtml
JD, don't they have to concrete the whole thing before they put the asphalt down anyways?
DRIVERS CALLED TO CARS!
FloridaMatt - maybe that is Daytona's way of getting the fans to leave quickly! New Hampshire's PA system drove me crazy the first race we went to up there -- I had to put my race headset on right away because the volume was up so high -- was fine with cars on the track, but too loud waiting around.
I'm betting I won't make the end of the race awake -- I tend to drowse off on races that start this late and that's a shame since I was looking forward to the wide open coverage.
You guys talk/complain about how Larry speaks ...
I have the hardest time understanding people like Joey / Ragan / Vickers / Denny ... To me, they sound like they have a mouth full of marbles ...
Yet, I have no problem understanding JuneBug / Montoya / Carpentier / Narain / etc ... and LarryMac ...
It's ok Martin.
I grew up outside of Asheville, NC and I can't understand a word of anything either Marcos Ambrose or Frankie Stoddard say...
;-)
It's swamp, so everything has to have a concrete base. Like my house!
15 mins of drying left for pit entrance. Dryer needs fuel soon lol
Yeah I think the Jet Dryer's go one mile an hour cause it took them forever to go by where I was sitting @ Daytona when I was there.
Ear plugs just don't help with that sound.
Why don't they just concrete the whole track?
John
yep a concrete pad, built on top of a Lime rock base.
That would take all the concrete in North America! LOL!
FloridaMatt
that's lot of concrete, plus it would probably turn out so white it would blind everybody for miles.
There's a disconnect between needing to do 80 to stay on the banking and the jet driers having no problem staying there at < 5...
I actually think the idea of a high banked 2.5 mile concrete track is kind of sexy....
lol
Isn't Texas World concrete?
@Pamm and MV...we ALL have 'pet peeves' with pronouncing words. One of mine is 'sandwich'. There is no 'm' in the word. And pumPkin.
Drivers are being told to get in the car and stop doing TV interviews
Matt, the pick-ups and wreckers have to keep a certain speed to stay in control.
The jet dryers are duel axle and creep. If you watch them, they constantly slide sideways on the banking, even against the wall.
I have no idea how they keep them straight. Must be low gear to say the least.
5 minutes to engines fired!!!
11, 14 37 to rear for unapproved adjustments.
83 also.
just heard the trackpass scanner come on!
Hey that was cool having Bobby Labonte give the command! Nicely done, too.
So, we start under yellow and they drive around while pit road gets the jet dryers.
JD, no confirmation of that yet. We may be able to go after just 2 or 3 extra pace laps.
Race command has not mentioned if it is a green yellow or not. Just reminded officials if they do that they cannot pit for adjustments
David,
Please stop correcting me. I am being told by NASCAR through the media channels and relaying that information.
Let's enjoy it together, OK?
I'm getting nothing on Race Buddy? No sound, no picture? Anyone else having trouble?
Sorry. Was relaying what was said by race control. They hadn't stated what they were doing.
Hopefully that won't be the case. Not a fan of green-yellow
no worries Martin :) there's an online test that "guesses" where you're from based on how you pronounce certain words. I grew up in Cali but the test always scores me as being from the East based on how I pronounce certain words.
Time go go racin'
Sally,
RaceBuddy is running fine. Make sure you did not click on the 3D Racebuddy.
Go back to the main page and load it again. Good luck.
@Gymmie - My first wife was from Alabama and I was told I picked up some of my accent from the way she spoke. Some of the people I work with in Ontario have no idea I'm from Quebec. :)
Let's go racing!
Good evening folks!
Kyle might not be the best guy to rundown the grid
ouch, the jet dryers hurt my ears -- can't listen to the pit reporters with that going on.
I work at an airport to jet engines don't bother me lol.
wish they wouldn't do pit reports when the dryers are going by.
competiton caution set for lap 15
2 till green flag
Looks like the pace car is running real high on the track - trying to get that wet area dry no doubt that the dryers couldn't get to
told them on the scanner one to go
Let's get this party started,already!
K, back to my typical 18 and 42 radio channels.
Glad Stremme is in the 26 over Said.
LOL I live by a major air force base so the jets are fine, but sometimes they hurt my ears.
Hope they have a safe race -- I really hate RP.
NASCAR.com's Leaderboard isn't working yet. I'm guessing RaceBuddy's Leaderboard may be affected too.
Thank you clouds and rain coming from Daytona, I really didn't want to watch the race (sarcasm).
David, we're all watching, no need to do pxp.
Leaderboard working now.
So why were the jet dryers so loud and now the cars are muted?
bevo, cause the dryers are louder then the cars.
Or at least that was the case when I was at the track.
I'd give my opinion about the race, but it's raining outside and my satellite is out.
long time, those were real time updates from race control before they got to tv. im off their frequency now.
good camera shots so far. Fox should take notes
I like the video box and the leaderboard. That really worked for me.
Blaney off track
MV, you called it on Papis
MartinVincent - I'm using trackpass's leaderboard and it seems to be OK, did you try refreshing it?
Looks like Canadian viewers will get side-by-side commercials every time TNT goes to a bottom-of-the-screen advertisement. This could get annoying quickly!
didn't like the placement of the coke zero ad. too distracting...
I don't like the graphic that's at the bottom next to the blimp. It's taking up a lot of space and it's annoying.
ooh 11 laps in and the satellite came back on.
Stewart has passed 20+ cars in 10 laps, he's coming hard and fast.
@Gina - The Leaderboard came up as soon as they crossed the line after lap 1.
@David - If my prediction is correct, we should be done with the S&P teams.
I love the look of that #36 Richie Evans tribute car with the tube bumpers and headers on the side of the car.
And now the blimp flying across the screen. Sorry, TNT, I do not like this stuff. Wide open coverage it's not, imho
They are really fine tuning this layout, though the 29 leader graphic is unnecessary IMO
@Jennifer- Hadn't thought of that :)
OK, I think I prefer regular commercials. This corner picture with commercials is wayyyyy distracting, along with their audio.
I agree, if they are going to cover up half the screen with graphics that doesn't help me watch the race.
Do they honestly think we don't know it's Daytona? Why the need to keep that plastered on the screen?
Distressing to see the whole backstretch grandstand empty.
I like it this way rather than regular commercials. I can ignore the commercial if something interesting is happening on the track.
longtime - did they even open it? I know for last year's race it was closed and they only sold tickets on the frontstretch.
That's an interesting triple split!!
On RB now, I can only watch the battle and it only shows the top 22 cars. I hate to close it and reopen it or maybe I should refresh. So far, broadcast is pretty good.
I like the pit road graphic
Longtime, track president said the superstretch was closed for this race. They did not offer tickets for it. Did lower frontstretch tix to $30 and $40 though
but we get full commercials during cautions is that it? cuz there's a whole lot of commercial on my tv right now
No, the backstretch grandstand was not open. My aunt runs the beer sales stands up there.
They have a good crowd in the main grandstands and everyone was orderly in the rain delay.
@JD - SD viewers must have missed half the stop from those left and right boxes on that triple split.
JD, running a beer concession at a racetrack must be interesting.
I heard someone say rain in the area on the scanner
That is the rub on Wide Open coverage. The screen format is HD so the SD folks get things cut off a bit.
Same complaints as last season so far!
They shut down the superstretch for the NW race in Feb. also. the 500 is the only event it is open. renewed tickets for Feb a couple weeks ago and it will be the same way next year.
Is J.J. Yeley about to park or is he having legitimate problems?
OK, well, I'm going to mute the TV so I don't have to listen to the commercials
MV he said on RB they had alot to do to the car. He was set up to qualify. Had to add oil, etc.
38 and 87 doing same thing.
18 thinks has loose wheel
RaceBuddy is actually a half a second ahead of the broadcast audio here now.
my racebuddy audio is nearly 40seconds behind the tv.
Looks like KyBu is racing the same way he was practicing.
Good job sleeping on that Phil.
Man, Parsons...
Kurt shot out because Kyle said he was coming. Phil dropped the ball there.
SD viewer here, the commercial graphic doesn't bother me
Phil Parsons does not deserve to have a microphone in his hand for any broadcast. he's horrible on pit road.
Wide Open Coverage is cool so far.
David,
The format of Wide Open coverage is the HD screen ratio.
So, stuff gets cut-off for non-HD viewers like the triple split in the pit stops.
Relax a bit there dude...
Crew just confirmed Kyle had a loose wheel. did have 1 stud on left rear hollow out hole. Told them they need to hammer that wheel for rest of night. Could be something to watch
JD, did you miss what I said? I said I AM a SD viewer and that the commercial graphic does NOT bother me.
It was a compliment
brad,
I got a couple of journalists giving it to me right now.
But, TNT said they are going to stick by him.
I thought he should be fired after his Harvick post-race fiasco in Pocono.
He has absolutely no clue in this position.
Ugh, split screen wasting space again.
Whoever invented that idea should be shot. Promptly!
Hate to say it but Adam is not good doing PxP. Fine throwing it to commercial but that's about it. No chemistry in the booth.
