Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Richmond (FOX - 7PM ET)
It's a very different weekend at Richmond International Raceway. Other than Marty Smith and Shannon Spake on-site for NASCAR Now, there is no ESPN presence at the track. SPEED handled the Nationwide Series race Friday night and FOX will produce the Sprint Cup Series race tonight.
Darrell Waltrip is a busy man. He is clearly the personality that both SPEED and FOX want on as many NASCAR shows as possible. This has pushed Jeff Hammond and Larry McReynolds toward the back burner.
Waltrip once again will be the star as he kicks-off the pre-race show with Chris Myers and Hammond from the outdoor infield stage. Hammond and Myers then move inside the Hollywood Hotel for the rest of the event.
Waltrip heads upstairs for the race telecast with Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds. Richmond needs the excitement that we used to see from Joy, not the current level of information being offered between Waltrip outbursts of emotion. Friday night, SPEED's Rick Allen kept a tight leash on Waltrip for the truck series race and it worked out quite well.
There are lots of stories tonight including Denny Hamlin racing at his home track and Kyle Busch continuing to grow-up before our eyes. The reality is that the stage is set for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to continue his resurgence at a track where he has a history of success. An Earnhardt win would a huge shot in the arm for the sport.
FOX has choices tonight on how to present the race. Last night, SPEED used wideshots to show groups of cars racing and keep the TV viewers in the loop of who was where and how they got there. This season FOX has been enamored of in-car cameras and "hyper-tight" coverage. On a short track, it could be a disaster.
Tonight will also shine the spotlight on the pit reporters. Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren are the best in the business. FOX has allowed them to fade as the race telecast rolls on and Waltrip takes over. With all the different fuel and tire strategies we will see tonight, it will be important to make all four pit reporters an integral part of the telecast.
Richmond under the lights is exactly what NASCAR needs to shake the "lovebug" racing out of the minds of the fans. The Nationwide race featured two-wide racing and fantastic restarts. While the Cup drivers are concerned about tire wear, the story of the race may be fuel if long green flag runs are the order of the day.

Happy Race Evening Planeteers :) <3
I've been enjoying the Rodney Atkins concert! So glad they streamed it ;). We even got to meet Matthew very nice young man.
I think NASCAR.com is coming around a bit.
Race Day has been an ordeal. Two hours is way too long. Should be half hour show leading into the Fox pre race coverage. There are a lot of top teams that didn't qualify well. An early big wreck could really shake things up. We will see.
Yes sir! They've been doing quite a few fun things lately! Almost getting with the times. Still some work to do but if they'll catch up with technology & get someone who has a clue in website design they could be something else!
If Fox calls the studio Hollywood Hotel, is the booth "The Hillbilly Hotel"?
RaceDay was tagged the Super WalMart of NASCAR TV.
Eventually there is something for everyone, but you have to wade through a ton of crapola to get to it.
I think Kyle Petty thinks John Roberts is a knucklehead.
I love that Kyle won't put up with that phoney "Kyle Busch has won a zillion Nascar races" stuff. He only counts his Cup wins. Good for him!
I love how everyone has NASCAR on FOX signs and FOX Sports signs. Everyone behind the stage was not there 30 minutes ago when SPEED's RaceDay checked in with the FOX guys.
Strong opening on the pre race. Crowd going wild. Then DW opens his mouth and kills the momentum
Hey, I can post as myself tonight! Yay.
Major digi pixel nightmare out here on the left coast...
Every thing is broken up...
Yes it really is I don't know why the shows have gone downhill :(. Back in 2K3 it was all Must See TV even when it was on FSN & they did it at 8 am regardless of race time & not always having drivers available to interview. JR, Waid, Mr. Winston were all awesome!
It's become a FF & then stop when a good segment is on :( if I do watch it live (which is generally only if a night race, it's not a wake up & watch anymore) I half pay attention until something catches my ear or I see a heads up on Twitter.
In Des Moines, IA, KDSM (my local FOX station) is off the air. Can't get it on DISH or via antenna. DISH reports the channel is having problems.
Anyone heard the latest on Trevor Bayne?
I wish I could watch...KDSM, FOX 17 from Des Moines is currently not working on Dish Network. They have a message and some horrible music saying they know about the problem and working on having it fixed...Hopefully it comes back in time for green flag.
they just said Trevor's hoping to be released tomorrow from Mayo. Was having double vision. Tricky things, insect bites.
So why is there just Fox signs behind the guys being waved by the fans.
Pretty interesting that Tony finally talked about his Jessica Zemken relationship on TV.
Charlie, how weird was that?
JD, Does nascar.com offer a free leaderboard for the Cup races?
Should be right on the front page!
I came upon a blog accidentally a few months ago...mostly female Stewart fans going on about Jessica. Wow...talk about having the claws out...yeeouch...! But it's not like he talks about them a lot, and to talk to DW...well, it's not like they've always been bestest pals.
Wonder how much you get paid to hold up a sign. The more air time the higher the pay?
Des Moines FOX is not on DirecTV either. Annoying music with a message they know about the problem and NO NEED TO CALL US. I'd be happy to see anyone on the screen right now, even KyleB.
Darrell Waltrip trying to pump Talladega, a race that featured absolutely no racing at all...just two-car drafting and trying to avoid the other two-car drafting teams.
Come on DW, get real!
Ginny, being told that station is off the air for a while.
Hope the race isn't as scripted as the fans behind the pre-race show were.
I can certainly understand Kyle Petty's loyalty to his father's 200 wins, but Richard's 200 wins weren't all on tracks you'd recognize today. At the time this issue was being discussed and debated, another Nascar site had a long, detailed article about those 200 wins. They would occaisonally run 2-3 times a week on the Grand National circuit with wins at Savannah,Georgia(?) being counted in the 200. There were other obscure tracks this very old man never heard of, so Kyle Petty's tirade was not totally fair. Personally, I hate comparisons from one era to another in any sport. This isn't the first time Kyle Petty and John Roberts were at loggerheads.
JD, that was weird. I was thinking, why the heck is he talking about 'dega two weeks later?
This Fruit of the Loom ad is getting a whole lotta air play.
From Nate Ryan of USA Today after Waltrip talked about crew chief swap for JGR being "possible."
Ryan: As a national media outlet, if you talk about rumors that are KNOWN to be patently false, you increase their "truthiness."
Weird word, but I get his point.
Mr Editor -
Paul Sawyer legacy - simple, dignified pre-race ...Semper Fi - blow it loud and blow it straight Marine Corps band
Walter
Absolutely shocked at a real American anthem for a change.
Did all the American Idull contestants have previous engagements?
Drum and bugles! Love it! The Marines do it right!
Thankfully I found an alternate viewing method...tuned in just in time to see that award winning shot of Kurt Busch adjusting himself. Fake crowd and that...wow, what a start to a broadcast...

Hey! The Star Spangled Banner wasn't ruined by an American Idol as usual! Richmond is typically good about that (and this is where I live!) My office is 3 miles from RIR.
They always seem to get the opening ceremony done right in Richmond.
@Roland
Leaderboard up on FOX
That tweet we could have done without.
Bill...it hasn't been Idols who've been messing it up last year. It was aging rockers who can no longer sing.
We need a good race and solid coverage tonight with no BS!
Yesterday's anthem was a good one to with a 10 year old singing her heart out.
Rick Allen did a masterful job at keeping the reigns on both Waltrips last night. Maybe Mr. Joy learned something! We can only hope...
They really shain't put the first race after an offweek down on Speed - I done totally forgot about it.
Looking forward to some good racin at Richmond tonight. Love FOX night races.
@ Anon @ 7:29. If Fox and other media want to give Kyle's 'stats' with credit for every Nascar race he's won, that's fine. Then they also need to do it with EVERY driver wh has EVER won in any other Nascar series. That would puff up several other drivers stats, too.
I have been in Tuscaloosa for the last few days. Sad here but I love how many people have come to help.
Had planned on being home this weekend, but somethin' happened.
I hope all my fellow Planteteers have a great race!
What's up with the music bed under the pit reporters? I can't even hear them! Why does FOX have to overdo everything?
Whew! Barely got to the mute button in time to mis the 'B's'!
That was a little weird! I could hardly hear the pit guys.
Lots of early in cars and tight shots.
I love the tight shots though - get to see the cars!
Apparently, Fox wasn't paying attention the past couple of nights...
Long shot shows the stands aren't packed.
It looks like the zoomed out camera angles is what we will see today on FOX. In my mind, it doesn't really matter, because I enjoy the coverage.
Mr Editor -
I guess RaceBuddy raised my expectations ...camera work on backstretch seemed better last night ...Is same production crew in place? ...truck and cameras
Walter
AncientRacer--*hugs* & prayers :(
See the difference from last night?
This is hyper-tight with in-cars. Few field shots and no perspective.
Showing 2 or 3 cars at a time just doesn't give a sense of what's happening on the track! Rats!
Kinda like watching an arcade game with some little kid changing the pictures.
Walter,
This is the FOX team. Last night the SPEED truck team produced the NNS race. Different producers and directors.
Many of the TV crew are the same.
Ooo, good one Charlie!! Hear that, Mr. Kempner?? Didn't watch the NW race last night, did ya, Artie?
AR-- all of AL is in our thoughts & prayers. Heartbreaking stuff.
So the shots will be there, just whether or not production team wants to use them?
FOX is always terrible at the beginning of a race. It's presented like they don't know what to cover. So they just hop from car to car randomly.
Wow. DW actually had a salient point about the modern brakes.
Truck can't tell the story. Just shows pics. Sooooo different from trucks last night.
Gotta mention the yellow line. Every. Single. Race.
NW had 15-20 cars racing on backstretch ...Cup has two cars racing ...the suits know how to screw up a decent race ...showing one at a time is an insult ...MRN audio, FOX mute ...time to channel surf and stay updated w/the blog @Sally ...wish I had Marty Brennaman to deliver the goods on the Reds broadcast ...true professionals elevate the broadcast
What's up with that commercial bumper? Seems like David Hill is still pushing for the 7-12 year old demographic.
JD your SOOOOOOO right, last night the camera work was spot on! So far tonight its the same fox tight tight tight shots, in cars dominating ughhhhhh oh well im trying not to think about all the im trying to enjoy this as much as I can, cause go figure the past 2 nights I watched the races but had to work so I couldnt enjoy em as much as i'd like! Thursdays k & n pro series race was just wow unreal how they showed all the battles! Tonight back to the same old fox why dosent anything change? WHY thats my only question WHY WHY WHY WHY??????????????????????????
FOX WHY
Kempner's Mise en scène leaves a lot on the table with respect to live sports television. And you know it is deliberate. In fact, I don't believe many cinematic techniques have a place in covering live sports. But we are going to get it anyway. Oh well. Off to channel 795 and HotPass. As Good As It Gets.
Once again, whoever is unexpectedly running up front, DW liked their chances before the race. Even if he never mentioned it before.
This approach grinds fans right into the ground. Gives no perspective on what is actually going on in the race. Just picks and chooses cars to update and then moves on.
Pretty lousy, especially on a short track where wideshots make it very exciting to see all the racing going on.
Well, the stands aren't full, but neither are they empty. Pretty good, considering.
But FOX, oh, FOX. Why? Why can't you learn anything over the years?
If I hadn't been to Richmond about 20 times, I'd have no clue what was going on. Wish I was there tonight, as I'd see a better race.
Thank goodness we got our Jimmie Johnson/Chad Knaus update.
A little off subject, but is anyone having issues with Facebook??
Trying to keep up on FB, JD's blog & Twitter. Thanks.
The race is oblivious to the producer. This is nothing but calculated tights shots on individual drivers.
DW == Captain Obvious
Edit: Darn... I spelled "Oblivious" wrong
FYI, DW's "new" explanation for tight an loose was how BP explained it years ago. Simple and makes sense, but suddenly it's DW's New idea? Puh-leese!
@slander...that's OK...they both work. ;-)
FOX problems in Des Moines continue, possibly caused by fire in nearby forest. Picture in and out. Listening on MRN radio.
I see Fox is still looking for a sponsor for the "What's Going On At The Speedway" Cam. Until we have a sponsor for a particular shot, it doesn't make it on television. Right, Artie?
Those three guys in the booth are beautiful. They're chit chatting about Mark Martin trying to pass Montoya. Behind Martin is Kyle Busch. By the time the guys in the booth complete their "thoughts"(?), Kyle has passed both Martin and Montoya. The three stooges in the booth obviously didn't notice it because they never mentioned it. Ahead of Kyle was Hamlin. Now there was a REAL story. Go figure.....
Here he goes again with the crew chief issues at Gibbs. DW has all of the answers. Anyone follow Monte Dutton on Twitter? He addressed the fact that DW keeps bringing this up. @Slander, you called it on DW, Captain O...
What a mess.
They keep jumping from one pit stop to another, never showing enough to see the entire stop! Nicw of Krista to slap down DW's crew cheif rumors!
THIS ISNT A MESS ITS A CLUSTER F*#&! I dont get it. I work at UPS if we worked like fox we wouldnt put the packages on the belt to get scanned to there right destination... we would throw all the packages in a big pile and pick one out of the stack and say ok lets focus on where this one package is going so it gets to its destination. LOL So sad
its not hard to broadcast the race right heck Speed had no trouble doing this.. why cant fox do this??
WHY WHY WHY
FOX WTF
Enough with DW talking on and on about the 11-20 crew chief swap. They have enough trouble keeping up with the facts!
Protip: Never make a drinking game that involves anything coming from Durrl's mouth. You'll be drunk before the first caution...
AncientRacer: thoughts & prayers to you & all in the effected areas.
Q: several times tonight, I've heard the booth refer to the driver of the 42 as "Juan Montoya." anyone know what happened to using his full name? Chef says "They're just lazy."
How are we supposed to watch this? No sooner than we see one car, they are off to another with no word from the booth? The coverage tonight is terrible compared to last night and Thursday? Are these not the same camera guys?
YES LETS SHOW KYLE BUSCH FOR A LAP AND HALF.... IF I DIDNT KNOW BETTER I WOULD THINK THIS IS QUALIFYING
The big issue tonight is that we have SPEED's telecast from last night to compare.
At one time, there were less than ten cars on the lead lap and it was still completely different than this mess.
Tight shots and in-cars. They love 'em!
green flag racing and over 2 minutes of replay wow! Ok im done for a bit im just fed up w this crap
Let's see if they find the 'debris'
Right - Dirty Durrl would have given the 42 some room. Sure.
Finally a caution. Like last night, 100+ laps (108 today, 123 yesterday)
Also hi all.
The Denny Hamlin show.
In car cams and bumper cams work great. If anything really happens, like an racing incident we can see it in replay.
So sad they do it like this.
This pit coverage is so bad they should hold down their heads. It is impossible to follow anything! Stay with the top three cars and then split the screen>
It makes it quite clear what we are missing tonight after seeing last night's race.
Weird that it continues like this without NASCAR stepping in for a chat.
@red...when JPM was running Indy cars, he weas just 'Juan Pablo'. When he went to F1, he became 'Juan Pablo'. Have no idea why.
that sucks for JPM DOH
If we wanted to watch replays we could just tune in Monday thru Friday and see it done with some thought!
Chris Meyers, certified journalist and clown-for-hire.
They just showed the replay of Montoya hitting the wall. I didn't see anything fall off despite significant damage. I'd love to see the debris. Off course, it was on the "backstretch". My cynicism is well founded. Nascar has done that to me over the last 25 years. Sorry, but I can't help myself....
@anon 8:15--LOL! True true :(. Whatever is actually going on is NONE OF OUR BUSINESS! :(
@red--I read once that he wanted folks to just call him Juan. If you say Juan Pablo that's OK but he prefers folks to just call him Juan.
JD if Nascar had a clue they would of steped in a while ago. I feel we will see this until 2014 in the Cup Series! Maybe Nascar dosent have much of a say w all the money the networks are pooring into this contract that was signed in 2005
Obfuscation is a new cinematic technique Mr. Bigtime Sports Producer is developing especially for NASCAR on Fox. How sweet.
three wide and they go to a ground level shot.
Restart master? Oh, right - he considers MotorMouth one of the greatest RP racers of all time, too.
Thank you lord, that was the best sude x side racing this year, LIVE!
@sally: i've always heard either just "juan pablo" or "juan pablo montoya." until tonight, i NEVER heard him referred to as "juan montoya." just wondered if JPM had asked for the change or if it's self-proclaimed by the booth.
Thanks to all for the ever thoughtful comments ...so I'm missing nothing on FOX? ...gotta say it, Mr Editor, so I'll try to keep it clean ...ole DW is a real pantload, isn't he?
Could the crawler possibly go any slower?
NOW THATS A CRANK IT UP WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
@w17scott:
Up-voted for diplomatic phrase.
lol sorry love Crank it up!
Hey guys, it was Juan Montoya before he went to Europe. There was potential confusion because of a world renown architect by the same name.
It's the 6 degrees of DW. Every incident, radio communication, has a DW story
I'm sure there is close racing somewhere on the track, but Fox won't show it to us. Don't they realize how boring it os to see 1 or 2 cars running away from the field?
Tight shots. This could be practice.
@slander ...Thx ...for first race on new configuration we had to walk through a hole in the fence and over a 10-ft pile of stable residue ...this was a fairgrounds first, you know ...appropos for DW's territory
@Buschseries61.....:-)
@Buschseries61:
After watching the ticker for 135 laps, I could read that rather clearly.
Never thought I would prefer Rick Allen to Mike Joy, but the long periods of silence tonight have changed my mind.
Does Mike Joy really think that Busch is going to fight his team mate Hamlin really hard for the lead with less that half the race over? Unbelievable. You let anyone go by at this point and save your brakes. They're already glowing red.
Tonight I really see their new philosophy on featuring 'personalities'. DW is the psychologist, breaking down every mental and physical problem through his own stories. The producer just hops to different drivers for DW to diagnose and treat.
Mike Helton, Dale Jr., Darrell, doing the NASCAR Unites ad. Where is NASCAR day? Haven't seen any of that recently.
But, but... glowing brakes don't mean nothin'. Durrl said so.
@Buschseries61:
Which brings to mind the old saw "Physician, heal thyself..."
Darryl's thinkin' too much tonight. And talkin' too much (as usual).
Mike Joy sounds tired, like he's just waiting to read the next promo or go to the next talking point, regardless of the action on the track. Such a waste of talent.
Helton said on RaceDay that the NASCAR Unites deal is going to be first because of the tornado stuff.
NASCAR day is last week of May.
Reading a promo during an attempted pass for the lead. Head up Mike -- look at the race.
Oh boy. Another piece of useless Fox technology. More toys for Artie to play with and ruin the broadcast.
To think a bumper cam is better then a wide shot to show two cars passing is crazy.
I really do feel bad for Joy. This network philosophy is just out of his control. Nothing else he can do but go along with the tight shots and bumper cams.
ok, i tried but i'm out: watching american in paris again instead of the fox broadcast. i'll follow the race here and on twitter but NOT on the tv,
thanks, again fox.
88 miles an hour!!
Done with this, see everyone with 15 to go.
Zooming in on one car at a time and moving on to the next single shot does not show the race.
Action track?
Oh - irony. I get it.
You guys complain too much.
Mr Editor -
saw a twitter comment about Madhouse at Bowman Gray ...miss that show ...hey, was that one of the Myers brothers in last nights NW race? Franklin County Speedway (VA) has its own version @1030a Sunday on Roanoke's Fox 21/27 (fox2127.com) ...Buck Wild Saturday Nights ...I believe track promoter Whitey Taylor does the promos and promises someone will be thrown out of the infield before the first race is run ..just a cozy little place in the hills of Southwest Virgina, don't you know
Walter
@Anon 9:02
LOL - U MAD?
Kurt got a little bit sideways there. Couldn't tell he hit the wall. How is that a caution? Because he love tapped the wall?
I can't take this anymore. I guess I'll try 'Ghost Adventures' or something more interesting than this is.
That's because we are fans, not cows.
Did Kurt hit anything?
Looked to me like Kurt either just brushed the wall or missed it. Didn't see anything flying off the car. Just another excuse for a caution?
Huh???? Caution?? It looked like in the replay that Kurt never touched the wall. What was the caution for? Notice they didn't say debris for running to commercial.
WOW...Fox attempting to show us why we are under caution...*EPIC FAIL* Have they just decided to stop trying? Seriously, how does a multi-million dollar company screw up that bad, that often?
Yes! But little Digger will be OK.
Looked like they were looking for a reason to throw a caution.
Me, JD, and Anon at 9:04 saw the same thing. Amazing that the "experts" in the booth missed it.
Looks like the WWE is present tonight(again).
@Sally:
Or go to YouTube and watch Whose Line is it Anyway episodes. Pure comedy gold.
The races Thursday and Friday to get a caution you had to be stopped and in the way big time.
@Sally -- I'm sure there's a replay of that darn wedding on somewhere in case you missed it yesterday!
This is the type of thing that non-fans use to show how ridiculous Nascar can be.
Kyle and Denny ...Denny and Kyle ...does FOX think this is a match race?
Guess the 88 is the lucky dog so everyone is complaining that it was a fake caution. Oh boy!
The Digger Cam in Turn 3 is out of focus. Cars look blurry there.
Junior was in the lucky dog position so of course it was a caution. How long have you been watching NASCAR?
Almost half way - the coverage has been so bad so far, and now the booth will get tired. I'll still watch though since it's the best we have.
Yawn
Fox's determination to show us that stupid rodent obscured the only shot they had of Kurt's wall kiss.
After all this time, I am amazed that "Digger" isn't sponsored by someone. Everything else is! I know! "Digger, brought to you by d-Con."
Mike Joy is on a roll. Stewart passes Menard. Joy says "rubbing is racing" thinking they made contact. It was very clear on my 50" that they never touched.
"Digger" -- sponsored by the INS?
Wonder what the "all new Digger" means?
No surprise, but sounds like JPM is living down to his reputation as being both a hot head and one of the dirtiest drivers in Sprint Cup. Its OK when he gets into someone..."get over it" is what he once said. Sounds like he wants to take Newman out?
The all new Digger - IN 3D!!!
"If the stunt drivers in that movie (Fast Five) drive like Robby Gordon, I want to go see it." So you go to the movies for the crashes, Mike?
For some reason the TV guys for all the networks take digs at R. Gordon whenever they get the chance.
Digger is in 3-D? Thanks.
You ever met Robby? That might answer your question.
hey the coverage stink buts it A OK WE HAVE DIGGER IN 3D YES YES YES!!!!
SAD
FOX = :(.....@ look a my pile of tears
I just got a pretty good look at the right side and right rear corner of the #22 car that brought out the caution. I didn't see a mark on Kurt's car. I'll keep watching.
at
Man, this is like the on-air guys are out of gas.
How about we get Byrnes, Hammond and Kyle Petty in the booth?
Need some new energy!
42 vs. 39 that one isn't over with yet - stay tuned
That looks more like Newman over driving the turn, until that second replay. and then Kurt Busch had no where to go. I wonder what will happen at the end of the race between Newman and Montoya?
I wish all the effort they put into showing you replays was put toward the race in real time.
I do believe that John-Paul better pull a Kryle Busch after the race and run for his trailer...
Newman! isn't someone he wants to mess with.
Those idiots in the booth need to shut up unless it has something to do with the actual racing on the track! Of course, its Chris Myers to the rescue!
actually, JD, while I haven't 'met' Robby...I've seen & heard him many times. He's *great* with fans, very personable. It's the drivers (and perhaps media :) ) who think 'not so much'....and probably for good reason...
Man, I miss the days when NBC would cut into a break to show an on-track incident. Instead, we get a full break then a billboard, which forces the pit reporters to rush through their reports. Only then do we get a replay of the incident. Sigh.
How can you "give it back" if you jumped the restart. Penalty !!
I think Kyle Busch hit the wall in turn 2 last lap after they went 3-wide. That's why he is going back. And what was the screaming on the radio?
Mr Editor -
Enough is enough ...off to bed early thanks to FOX's ineptness ...night all
Walter
glen: he not nice with TV peeps.
Bye Walt, we have had about one-third of the peeps leave tonight.
It's not because of the racing.
NASCAR told JPM one more incident and they would put him on the trailer!
JD, I'm not surprised. He's one of those 'polarizing' figures....knows when to 'turn it on'. Took a while to figure it out.
Personally I've gone to Dr Who. Just checking in.
KTTV feed in Los Angeles is out of wack right now. A few minutes ago it lost its HD feed and it shrunk my whole picture.
(Jimmie twirls mustache)
MWA-HAA-HAA-HAA-HAA!!!
If Artie would televise the race as it happens we wouldn't need all these instant replays. Who is sponsoring the replays anyway, Memorex?
How can Nascar not penalize the 18. Last I knew a rule was a rule. UGH!
