Live Blogging Nationwide Series In Iowa (ABC - 1:30PM ET)

The good news is that the Iowa race is a stand-alone weekend for the Nationwide Series racers. Away from the hustle and bustle of Charlotte, the series regulars are ready to race on broadcast TV to a much larger crowd than normal. The bad news is that All-Star race winner Carl Edwards boarded his plane and flew to Iowa for today's race.

Marty Reid is off this weekend as he preps for the Indy 500 telecast on ABC next week. Allen Bestwick is filling-in and will be joined by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. This trio often presents a much more cohesive on-air presence than with Reid in the mix. Bestwick's knowledge of the sport is the difference.

Nicole Briscoe is not happy about being away from her IndyCar husband Ryan, but she is in Iowa and will host the NASCAR Countdown show from the Infield Pit Studio. Rusty Wallace has other duties this weekend, as he is the designer and partial owner of the Iowa facility. Jarrett and Brad Daugherty will join Briscoe on the pre-race show.

One story of this race is the fact that Kenny Wallace is making his 500th NASCAR start. Wallace is one of the series regulars who is rarely heard from once the green flag drops. This series is the playground of the Sprint Cup Series drivers who bring superior funding, equipment and experience.

This should also be an opportunity for ESPN's production team to respond to Bestwick's presence and present the race with a broader perspective. There are some diverse stories to tell, even if Edwards and friends are running away with the race.

This post will serve to host your comments on the ABC production of the Nationwide Series race from Iowa Speedway. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

Well, it's a rough week for teams and camerapeople alike.

Hoping the tight shots et al from the All-Star race get canned.

We'll see. I haven't had one good reason to throw rocks at Speed yet when it comes to coverage...when it's bad, it's still good...so..I dunno.

Hope they go back to the usual stuff for NW. All-Star was hokey and resplendent with Fox style coverage, and it sucked.

Just my thoughts, don't shoot me.

Happy Race Day Planeteers <3

Very proud of Herman! Happy 500th race! He's a great man :)

Did I just miss it or did ABC/ESPN make absolutely no attempt at any practice or qualifying coverage of this race?

So, Cope, Cope & Cope are running the distance?

Anonymous said...

Intersting that this race is on ABC. I was kinda shocked.

oldnewenglander said...

In light of the S&P count, it makes me wonder. Which do you prefer --

Those nine positions in the field being filled by teams that don't intend to race or by Sprint Cup regulars?

Roland said...

No Marty? No Rusty? WOOOOOOO!!!!!!! No MRN for me today. Should be fun.

West Coast Diane said...

Well this will be a first. Following race on TDP live.

Don't get network channels on sat dish when out of home area. So, hooked up to campground cable and they don't have local channels. Never upgraded regular antenna.

So will just follow along here.

Probably won't miss much if ESPN/ABC up to old tricks.

MikeC said...

They're expecting severe weather in that area this afternoon. That may be a side story.

They're on the big boy network. Of course doesn't hurt that it gives them to promote the big 500 broadcast one week from today!

AncientRacer said...

Washing dishes and waiting for the pre-race and listening out of one ear to "Baseball Tonight" on ESPN talking about the Cubs. What struck me is in all they were saying is that you could substitute the word "Junior" for "Cubs" and "Junior Fans" for "Cubs Fans" in nearly every case and it would work.

I hope Herm does well today.

MikeC said...

From the National Weather Service:

Roadgeek Adam said...

MikeC: Radar forecasts are calling we should be fine due to a near miss of Newton.

Daly Planet Editor said...

A season of opportunity? Well, in a way I guess.

Roland said...

This track needs a cup race!

oldnewenglander said...

DJ neglected to mention that Austin Dillon is helped by having a great team to drive for. It's Harvick's car.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Shhhhh.....

West Coast Diane said...

Can anyone help a girl out. How about a radio station broadcasting race. I've tried MRN affiliates and my Tune-In app on iphone. Not having any luck.

Thanks.

Ps..JD...I'm a JR fan but really don't fit the 3 descriptions. Yes, I was interested when he was in the Busch series because of his Dad. But if he had been a jerk (and it was close at times :-))I wouldn't be following him today. Just seems pretty real and low key to me even with his money. Plus, even though I wish he would cool it with the 4 letter words, listening to his scanner is great entertainment. Also, I am a pretty loyal person and don't switch just because my guy isn't doing well. I also root for others:-)

West Coast Diane said...

Wow....Perky Jerky has a banner ad at the top of the MRN website.

oldnewenglander said...

Herman is the in-race reporter? He might talk during green flags.

Daly Planet Editor said...

500th start for Kenny, hope we get an interview with him.

Di, I kinda do think you fit one group!

Charlie said...

Is there a scanner for the race today?

Roland said...

@Diane Try WYSH out of Knoxville TN, or WTDR out of Talladega. I noticed since the last update TuneIn doesnt show many stations broadcasting the races, even though there are. Could try typing in the name of the race. Sometimes more stations will pop up.

Daly Planet Editor said...

No scanners at this stand-alone race, that service returns next week in Charlotte.

oldnewenglander said...

Didn't Michael McDowell already have a big chance and make a habit of being unable to qualify?

Charlie said...

No scanner, bummer. I always listen to Kenny Wallace and here on his 500 start I don't get to hear him.

Anonymous said...

The lineup at the bottom showed Danica Patrick starting?? Shouldn't she be at Indy? Or was it an error?
Cathy

Roland said...

Good pre race show so far

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yep, Nicole has been good in this role. I just hope the weather does not turn bad. That is a lot of people sitting outside.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Error.

AncientRacer said...

@oldnewenglander

Of course Herm will talk during green flags! Heck, give him half a chance he'd call the race from the car! That is why they have mute buttons in the truck! :)

Anonymous said...

Is it me or is Big Brad more subdewed without Rusty in the pit studio?

BTW, fantastic job by Ryan McGee on the Nascar now classic track tour last week.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I think Kenny knows he might be wrapping it up in the car pretty soon.

Talks about moving back to MO and settling down all the time.

glenc1 said...

ya know....I like Austin Dillon, I think he has a great future and has proven himself. But I don't even think *he* would say he did it 'the hard way'. I mean, really....compared to what?

hey, there's a tornado watch up...did they mention that?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Great observation. The #2 guy has to follow the #1 guy's lead on TV.

When Rusty is there, it's all about volume, excitement and hype.

DJ is a thinker and is low-key. I think Brad is more effective with DJ.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Glen, they sure did. The wind is howling. Hope it stays green and goes fast.

West Coast Diane said...

Roland...THANK YOU!!! I love TDP and the Planeteers. Always so helpful. And just in time...enjoy the race all.

Ps..we are towing a trailer so motorhome bound. Hotter than Hades and humid outside...especially for this California girl :-). Looking forward to listening to race and following TDP.

Anonymous said...

They were talking about Austin Dillon's progression from ARCA to Trucks to Nationwide. Big Brad said that Dillon did it "the hard way". He's got to be kidding. He's had the best chassis, motors, mechanics, crew chiefs, pit crews and budgets. I'll bet there tons of drivers in those three Race Series that would kill to have to deal with his 'adversity'.

Anonymous said...

Allen in the booth always #winning that.is.all <3

MikeC said...

Iowa Speedway is on the very western edge of the Watch area. Where I'm located, in western Illinois, we're in the same Tornado Watch (#323). I'm on the very eastern edge of it. It's in effect until 9p.m. Central

Anonymous said...

Yeah Patrick, both Cope sisters ran nearly 40 laps each in practice. Derrike Cope's normal car the #28 has sponsorship, so Setzer is racing too.

Cobb, Harr & Shepherd may not make it past halfway based off their records.

MikeC said...

Can definitely hear the wind blowing in the backstretch announcers's mic on MRN.

Anonymous said...

Look at those grandstands! Who said Cup drivers were necessary?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Loved the starting command with that little kid.

AncientRacer said...

Am I right there are 3 women in the race today? 2 Copes and JenJo?

Also, Front Row Joe got no credit for making the commute -- though he did get a head start over Carl and Brad.

Daly Planet Editor said...

The Cope twins! God love dental assistants.

Anonymous said...

The only problem with Nicole hosting the prerace is it means there is a chance Bestwick will be in the booth.

The coverage so far has actually been pretty good other than the PxP.

CRZ said...

I probably haven't been paying attention. Where's Dr. Jerry Punch been for the past month (or has it been even longer than that)?

glen1 said...

what a pleasure it is to hear Allen, Dale & Andy.

Do those Cope girls really not realize how trashy they look? Geez...

Anonymous said...

The sound of the cars is overpowering the booth. I can barely hear Allen, Andy and Dale.

MikeC said...

The whole booth sounds a lot more fluid and energized with Bestwick leading the way. Sounds like they're having fun calling the action.

Daly Planet Editor said...

CRZ,

All the ESPN guys go on vacation during the NNS season because they can't from July to November.

Just regular rotation of time off.

Vicky D said...

We don't need those stinkin' cup guys in a race! AB should be a fine substitute too!

Anonymous said...

ESPN is making some good moves off-camera, why can't they make that one final move to put Bestwick in the booth?

AncientRacer said...

@glen1

Thant is not a nice thing to say at all. At all.

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's weird how they cultivate that look! It's their brand.

Anonymous said...

Need a through the field segment before the competition caution

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon, Bestwick's NBC past was an issue for ABC. Now, all the races are on ESPN. I agree it's time for a move.

glenc1 said...

AR, that's probably true.
:0

Daly Planet Editor said...

Cars are back on the track in Indy. Jumping back and forth.

Drama vs. racing!

Roland said...

AB, Andy, and DJ are really working well together. Nobody is talking over anybody. Nobody off topic. Theyre just simply calling the race. Hope FOX is watching. Best ESPN broadcast of the year so far.

glenc1 said...

wish I could watch Indy. But upgrading DISH is probably not a good option right now.

oldnewenglander said...

I assume Dr. Punch returns next week to his tradition May role as a lead pit reporter for the Indy 500?

Anonymous said...

If these Larry McReynolds rumors are true, ESPN gotta hire him to replace Brewer.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jerry will be back at Indy, you are correct.

No rumor that Larry Mac will be out, just that DW was trying to get his brother in the booth for the FOX races.

Larry loves SPEED and that network loves him. I think Larry and DW will be gone from the booth for live races soon. End of a good run.

oldnewenglander said...

I should clarify to say Dr. Punch's traditional May role at the Indy 500 until NBC takes it over.

West Coast Diane said...

Of course the one time I can't watch a race reading positive comments. Glad for all of you, though. Enjoying listening to radio. Recaps, thru the fields, excitement. Forgot how exciting a race can be if you stick to calling the race and updating what's going on...with everyone!

Vicky D said...

Thanks TB you need brakes to stop the car! Back to you AB!

Anonymous said...

Both Larry and DW out?
Wholesale changes coming for FOX, JD?

AncientRacer said...

If Larry Mac does replace Brewer will he become like Brewer?

And who is running the camera on top of the stands? I have yet to see one long or wide shot. These tight shots are giving me a headache!

Daly Planet Editor said...

As you know from Bestwick, most guys do not jump from one network to another in NASCAR and move into big positions.

BTW, ESPN loves Tim Brewer.

Anonymous said...

Char-leet?

Anonymous said...

ESPN will be interesting if there's an NFL strike.
I think I've heard talk of them stepping up their Nascar coverage in the event of that.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hehe....that was kind of funny.

Anonymous said...

Through the field! YES

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon, the big rumor is that if there is no football all the Chase races will move to ABC. No comment from the Bristol boys.

oldnewenglander said...

@anonymous

Chris Berman will host Nascar Countdown

Anonymous said...

Only the top 5? That was disappointing.

James said...

This is a much better flow to the race from the booth. AB is letting everybody do their job and they are responding with a lot of input. If this does not show you can not talk over DW and enjoy the race. NO agenda, no war stories, no I would've, no headache!!!!

Anonymous said...

I think that ESPN will probably look to renew their part of the television coverage package.
NBC/Comcast (or is it Comcast/NBC???) will probably end up with the full Indy package once ABC/ESPN's 500 contract is up.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I hope Nationwide races go to SPEED and ESPN just comes in for the final 17 Cup races.

SPEED could do so much for that series.

AncientRacer said...

@James

And no "boogity" either. ;)

And if DW were in the booth and his dad were being inducted into the HOF this coming week that is all we would hear about. Shows DJ has class.

oldnewenglander said...

Here's a question:

How will ESPN/ABC split the broadcast crews for the weekend of Oct. 15-16.

The 500-miler in Charlotte is Saturday night on ABC and the Indycar season finale is Sunday afternoon in Vegas on ABC.

Could AB get a chase race in the booth "on the network" even if they don't make a switch?

Anonymous said...

Agreed about SPEED and the Nationwide series.
And that will improve ESPN's Cup coverage.

Anonymous said...

Really need to move back through the field. Sorenson, McDowell, Herring, Edwards have dominated the broadcast so far. Barely a peep on Almirola, Leffler & Buescher. Annett, Bliss and Steve Wallace have been invisible.

Anonymous said...

Ah, come on. How could ABC NOT like AB after that spirited Dancing With The Stars promo?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Good question. My guess is Marty does both right now and he flies with Vince and Jamie to the IndyCar race.

James said...

I have followed this NASCAR for many years and I do not recall ever hearing DW and class in the same sentence! DJ is like his dad, a gentleman and classy as it comes!

Charlie said...

This race is not to exciting.
It is hard to know who is running where.

oldnewenglander said...

Going off topic here, but this is the greatest bump day drama since the Penske debacle in 1995.

Charlie said...

Bad restart there from the booth. Pit reporter talking and the race restarts.

Anonymous said...

Mandatory Cope twin caution.

AncientRacer said...

@James

I did not use them together in the same sentence, you did ! LOL

Charlie said...

According to the guy tweeting for Kenny Wallace, Kenny came in twice on the last pit stop.
Kenny is the in car reporter, 500 start and they miss the 2nd pit stop by him.

Anonymous said...

Charlie, they've mentioned Wallace only once today.

West Coast Diane said...

Well, on the radio I heard....

That one of Cope girls
was making her third stop, the third because of a black flag for smoke. Followed up soo after that it was a tire rub and that the hood was up and her pit crew was trying fix it.

Also, detailed info on the tires and including how clean they looked after comp caution.

Much more....amazing. Race is so much more interesting.

To whoever asked about camera shots. I thought I heard or read because of the potential severe weather they brought the camera men down from their perches.

James said...

I stand corrected, thx. Danica stuck in line to go out, rain, she would not get out of the car, she sure wants it bad! Big time drama, sorry

Daly Planet Editor said...

We may see Danica next week in Charlotte. Sitting on pit road in Indy trying to go out and qualify and it rained.

She might not make the Indy 500. Big story.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I give them credit because they are still out there, but it's weak from mid-pack on back.

Anonymous said...

Would it be safe to say that if Danica is out of the 500, she will go full time Nationwide next season?
Oh, ESPN will love that!!!!

Anonymous said...

Second Cope-twin caution, met the quota.

oldnewenglander said...

IMS Radio Network to Brian Barnhart: "The light precipitation is preceding what looks to be a pretty heavy downpour"

Charlie said...

How many sets of tires did they have at the start of the race to use.

AncientRacer said...

There was a picture for the ages from Indy: Danica in her bundled up car with a guy holding a bumbershoot over her head (I'm flipping back and forth too).

Daly Planet Editor said...

Oh, she will be in Charlotte getting lapped next week!

oldnewenglander said...

Don't get your hopes up about Danica in Charlotte just yet.

IMS Radio is now openly talking about removing our old friend John Andretti from the driver's seat of his #43 car (which is safety in the field) and inserting Danica.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Being told Danica and Go Daddy could possibly buy-out a qualified car. She would have to race that car, but it would carry her sponsor. That would be interesting.

Charlie said...

Oh well. Kenny got in a wreck but he wasn't up front so no big deal.

Charlie said...

Why do directors like tight shots.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Charlie, they get sucked into trying to show things they feel are important as opposed to keeping a broader perspective.

The FOX guys will tell you they are 100% right in the way that Artie Kempner cuts a race.

Anonymous said...

Isn't the Indy 43 co-owned by Richard Petty?
And isn't the new ownership of RPM high on Danica???
This could be interesting.

oldnewenglander said...

Too many Nascar/Indy connections here. The John Andretti Indycar is #43 because it is owned by Richard Petty. So technically, Danica could drive for an Earnhardt and a Petty?

James said...

AND the FOX guys also thinK DW is the face of NASCAR, so what are you left to think? Maybe they are in the wrong business?

Anonymous said...

Charlie, review the Cinematic techniques article in Wikipedia. Kempner will try to do each and every listed item once each broadcast. Once you have been taught these things it is difficult to understand there are situations where it is not always appropriate.

MikeC said...

Don't worry they'll see to it DP is in the 500.....GoDaddy.com will make sure of it. Way too much money on the line there....not only with the sponsor, but also for television.

Charlie said...

Yes Allen B. it is hard to tell what is going on when you are viewing the race through a bumper cam.

oldnewenglander said...

Hey, wait a second here:

www.versus.com is redirecting to nbcsports.msnbc.com

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's IndyCar.com for the info, not VERSUS.

They are in the middle of a major rebranding.

I heard NBC Sports Net and also CSNBC. We will see what they pick.

Anonymous said...

Oldnewenglander, welcome to the new world of NBC/Comcast.
Versus will soon be rebranded to NBC something or other.

AncientRacer said...

Danica will be at Indy even if she is the one in the Hot Wheels jump car.

oldnewenglander said...

Ah thanks JD. That is much more useful!

Anonymous said...

JD, is it true that Dick Ebersol left NBC Sports because of a Conflict with Comcast?

Charlie said...

Watching this race you would think the only cars on the track that count are the top 4.
Not much camera time for the other drivers.
It is easier to cover 4 cars then 30 if your doing the camera work.

AncientRacer said...

Yes there is quite a lot going on at Comcast/NBC in every division. Know folks there who are quite nervous.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Looks like John Andretti might be the car that gets the whammy so Danica can get Go Daddy into the field. Stay tuned.

Pretty good race, be nice to have a NNS regular win today.

Anonymous said...

So if I am seeing this right, IndyCar's points leader Will Power, Danica Patrick, Scott Dixon, Marco Andretti, and a lot more of their big names are going to miss their biggest race of the year because of this. They are streaming something on Indycar's website and they are talking about what would happen that qualifying is stopped because of rain.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Ebersol said he could not reach an agreement on a new contract.

He is used to losing money on his pet project, the Olympics.

As you know, Comcast is not going to lose money on anything. That is a pretty fundamental issue.

oldnewenglander said...

Brewer is not on tape! Wow.

Anonymous said...

Herring is up to 5th, we've heard nothing from him since his pit road issue.

AncientRacer said...

One rumor is Ebersol may be going with Current with Gore and Olby.

Anonymous said...

First time the RWI cars have been covered all day.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Good old Steven Wallace!

Anonymous said...

I guess Disney will make a major effort to get the Olympic package.

CRZ said...

Full-screen extreme weather updates on KSTP have taken over - this is the kind of thing that makes you wish NASCAR was NEVER on network television. (Or at least online, like the NHL Playoff game is! Thanks NBC Sports!)

MikeC said...

That's why I don't have a problem if NASCAR went with the 43 fasteast and eliminated the top 35 safety net. Trust me, if a big name wasn't among the 43 fastest, they'd still manage to buy their way into a race.

Charlie said...

Just show the top 2 cars racing and for filler we will show you Steven Wallace.
No flow to this race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Disney has a problem in that the networks they own are full of programming.

They should have changed ESPN Classic into an ESPN3 network when they had the chance.

Going to be interesting to see how much of the next Olympics is online.

Anonymous said...

At least I can understand NASCAR's Qualifying procedures, and their live charting of qualifying speeds. Indy Car's is confusing the heck out of me listing the same names more than once.

And looks like severe weather will miss the Iowa Speedway to get the NNS race all in.

Anonymous said...

So the 10th place car and possibly the only battle on the track as well as teammate racing with an Iowa native was not worth covering Mr Editor?

oldnewenglander said...

@Anon

The Indy 500 qualifying procedure allows three attempts at qualifying per CAR.

So those drivers have actually attempted to qualify primary and backup cars (backup cars are indicated with a "T" next to the number)

Daly Planet Editor said...

I agree! Cover the racing.

West Coast Diane said...

Oops. The camera thingie was at Indy. My excuse...following 2 things on many sources. TDP, Twitter, Radio, TV. Overload :-)

AncientRacer said...

I think the Indy qualifying procedure goes back to the old days when the cars would break down a lot.

Dang. This camera work is giving me no feel for the field at all.

Daly Planet Editor said...

ESPN now doing a full on FOX impression.

SPEED truck guys laughing.

Anonymous said...

Not quite full on FOX.....better booth.
BTW, JD any idea who will host Nascar Now's HOF coverage tommorrow?
I was none too thrilled by the ESPN staffer, I forget her name, who filled in last week.

AncientRacer said...

Holy Moly!

A wider shot from above showing 3&4 and part of the front! Caution lap, but still.. Maybe now that the rain is not a threat there is someone on the roof.

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 402 - The Cope sisters have a long history of causing cautions and getting in the way, has nothing to do with their gender. Just their last name.

glenc1 said...

if you mean Michelle Bonner--personally, I think she's better than Nicole.

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's going to be Bestwick with Dale Jarrett and Marty Smith in Charlotte tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

anon 4:02...many of us have been supportive of female drivers with actual talent...I think it's embarrassing that Drag racing has done so much better in that respect than NASCAR. I keep hoping one of these gals will be given a chance in a good ride. But as long as Cup owners put so many of their own Cup drivers in their NW rides, opportunities get slimmer & slimmer. It takes owners and sponsors to change it.

Anonymous said...

Michelle Bonner.....thanks.
She was just okay, maybe it's just personal preference.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Don't feed the trolls. We have been strong supporters of women in both racing and on TV since we started.

Indycar drama around 5PM is going to be big.

Charlie said...

15 Laps to go.

glenc1 said...

Michelle has kind of a no nonsense (maybe old school?) style--less of her own personality. I guess one either likes it or they don't. Sometimes Nicole is just a little too smiley for me.

AncientRacer said...

I feel kinda bad for Stenhouse right now. Runnin' for his life with Carl and Brad just behind.

Anonymous said...

Guess I'm just expecting Ryan Burr to fill in, forgeting how his star is rising at ESPN.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Michelle has been filling-in for the last two years. She likes NASCAR and is a no nonsense anchor who is much more news-oriented than Nicole.

Both Mike and Nicole have done solid jobs as they rotate in and out of the studio. That is a rough gig.

Stenhouse is going to do it!

Rusty Shackleford said...

Just sent to programming@kstp.com, I suggest any others in the MPLS/STPL area unhappy right now do the same:

Pat yourselves on the back for the "community service" KSTP provides by dumping Sunday network sports programming (viewers your station desperately needs, judging by the cracks in the studio sets) for OMG WEATHER EVERYONE PANIC GET DAHL ON AIR NOW! Pathetic. We've all seen thunderstorms, and pre-empting one of the best races of the year (ran in IOWA, the closest thing this godforsaken metro area will ever sniff to a proper motorsport) in order to completely botch storm coverage with obsolete graphics and putting your people on-air with terrible cell reception (do your job right for Pete's sake, find a loving landline if you want to be on the TV), reporting "trees down" (again, OMG) is just embarrassing. No wonder I don't bother with your station unless I have to. Can't wait for the Hubbards to run out of money, by my estimate it won't be long from what I've seen from this media "empire." Yes, you are outside the traditional NASCAR market so I'm sure you can justify your angry viewers with that old line, just remember in the end making the public unhappy will effect your bottom line, the only thing you people care about in the first place. Good luck with that.

Roland said...

YES!!!! Finally a Cup driver didnt win!! Good Job Ricky!

AncientRacer said...

That was nice! Bet Stenhouse feels real good.

Shepherd stayed in all the way, too.

See Y'all later.

Thanks, JD!

Anonymous said...

Go ahead and celebrate Ricky! You deserve it kid! They said it at the beginning of the show: The race of opportunities: Ricky just took advantage of his opportunity!

Charlie said...

Only showed the first 5 cars crossings the finish line.

If you were not driving in the top 4 you got very little camera time.

People that watched this race on Tv as their very first race to see, I don't think they would go to a real race.

People at that track I bet saw a completely different race then what was on Tv.

Anonymous said...

FINALLY a win by a regular & what one to win it! Very proud of Ricky! <3

Daly Planet Editor said...

Regardless of what you think of him, that Jack Roush is one tough SOB.

Anonymous said...

Tough day for ESPN. ESPN was focused on the top five the first 50 laps. When they finally did a through the field segment, it covered just the top 5. Drivers running from 5th-15th were ignored until ESPN finally covered them the last 60 laps. But that effort seemed disjointed as one blog member noted. Tight shots dominated the afternoon and hurt the viewer perception.

Bestwick did mesh with Dale and Andy very well. He was unable to change the camera angles, but he kept up the energy. Normally he pushes for a deeper view of the field but he did not today.

The race was not the best Iowa race, but it was still decent and enjoyable. I'm so happy to see a regular finally win.

@Rusty,

You're not being fair. As I type this, WCCO is pre-empting PGA golf and KARE is pre-empting an NHL (PLAYOFF) game - KMSP is also showing weather live so it's not like KSTP has a choice here.

What *is* disappointing is they couldn't find a way to move the race to Channel 5.2 - what good is a "weather" channel when you're blasting the weather all over your primary channel? Wasted technology there.

(Also, including the Hubbard stuff and the Dahl stuff is sure to meet your email with the response it deserves - straight to the bit bucket.)

I'm not happy about missing the second half of this race either, but there are better targets for your disappointment. Just my humble opinion.

Morgan Shepherd gets 20th, not bad for him. :)

Kenny Wallace and the great pit call gets 6th.

Reed Sorenson gets the most laps led award, leading 77 of them, nice job there.

McDowell's first race in the 18 nets him 7th.

And ultimately the streak since Boris Said in Montreal in 2010 is finally over (yes I count Boris's post). Ricky Stenhouse did a whale of a job.

I'll be in Windsor NY camping next weekend, so I'll see you guys in 2 weeks.

Sad this blog has people complaining about the storm warnings and coverage during a race??!!

Does anyone know exactly what Dave Burns' forearm tablet mount is? Where can I get it?
