Live Blogging Camping World Trucks From Chicagoland (SPEED - 7:30PM ET)

That is driver Steve Arpin, who is on tonight's pole for the Camping World Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway. It looks to be a pretty racy bunch tonight. There are some current Cup drivers, a handful of one-timers and a group of regulars chasing the points. That's been a good combo for this series.

Krista Voda kicks things off at 7:30PM with The Set-up pre-race show. Rick Allen will call the race with Phil Parsons and Micheal Waltrip. Hermie Sadler and Ray Dunlap are the pit reporters.

This track is fast, but not the type of track for which the truck series was intended. Beating and banging here just results in less aero downforce and ultimately lack of a shot to win. Passing is tough and restarts might hold the key to the race.

TV looks to be the familiar package from SPEED. The focus is on the race, nothing from the TV side is designed to take over the telecast and it really works. Look for lots of split-screens tonight to follow two groups racing or green flag pitstops.

This post will serve to host your comments on the Camping World Trucks in Chicago. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below.

Hey folks! Have a feeling this is going to be a light crowd. Lots going on this weekend.

Took a trip to Medford, the hotel doesn't have Speed and the trucks are on tonight!!!
Yikes..
What to do????
Race Buddy comin' up!!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Better yet, sports bar and RaceBuddy! Combo platter.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Don't forget RaceBuddy tonight at NASCAR.com for the race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Looks cold up that way tonight.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Johnny Sauter and Austin Dillon the NASCAR.com RaceBuddy in-truck cams.

Caught the end of Cup Happy Hour, and chuckled when Kyle Petty pointed out that, for all intents and purposes, TV and the rest of the media will only be giving time to the 'chasers'...whether a 'spoiler' wins a race or not. He does tell the truth.

Afraid lots of trucks are packing it in early tonight.

With the typical cookie cutter track, I'm not sure how long I can stay awake tonight watching the race. Gonna be a close thing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Busch, is Jen Jo going to run the distance tonight?

diane said...

Nice "Up close and personal" with Paludo. Good luck to him

Roland said...

This track has put on some really good truck races. Expecting some good racing tonight. Was kinda stunned last night that Speed had live coverage of the TORC off road truck race from across the street. They never advertised it. Wasnt my cup of tea so didnt watch much, but I heard Brendan Gaughan did good.

Arpin winning the pole is surprising. Very surprising. Afraid though its going to be the Kyle and Kev show. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll wreck eachother.

Crowd looks abysmal. Not shocked considering the temps. Even in July this place was half empty for Cup.

Buschseries61 said...

Gotta love Krista, silly but fun. JD, I'm pretty sure JJC will run the distance.

Charlie said...

Good anthem.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Hi everybody. Time to see a first time pole winner prove why he earned it.

This will not be a good day if you cannot stand Mikey, because he was absolutely annoying in quals.

B for the Anthem. Not bad.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Those two seemed pretty nice for actor types!

Good to see Mr. Camping World there too.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Oh yeah also one from the Jayski news department, Gresham Motorsports Park might get a Truck race.

Steve L. said...

So nice to watch a race without the crawl at the bottom of the screen.
(hear me ESPN?)

Roadgeek Adam said...

This is already the Kevin Harvick show. Someone wreck him and Kyle. Then we can have a real show.

Happy Pick 'em Ups racin' Planeteers <3

Shocked to hear that 62 and 9 trucks won't be running next year

Buschseries61 said...

Harvick or Busch up front only provides the same dull storylines for SPEED. Can they win another?

Daly Planet Editor said...

I'm afraid it's only going to get worse. You see Mr. Camping World scrambling to get in there and deny rumors the series is ending?

Anonymous said...

I know I saw that and thought WOW!

Brendan doesn't seem happy, according to the article.

Also, everyone here is skeptics.

Bobby O said...

Hmmm, Trying race buddy for the first time tonight. I know all of you hard core fans are laughing!

Not sure if I like it or not.

Really surprised it seems to work very well on Uverse.

Buschseries61 said...

Germain spread themselves too thin this season. They have the 13 struggling in Cup, the 60 and 50 parking in Cup. They struggled jumping from a 2 to 4 truck team, and led to lack of results. If Harvick and Busch did not show up, maybe these guys would of had more opportunities to run up front and build confidence. Anyway, The whole thing started to blow up when NASCAR forced GEICO out of Nationwide.

Roadgeek Adam said...

This Cheaters Show is not helping make this race more interesting.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bobby, this is the small size with just 4 video sources. The RaceBuddy for Cup is 8 sources, live leaderboard and Raceview tracker.

Roland said...

Would love to see Gresham get a race. Only an hour south of my location. Gresham family has poured a lot of money into that place.

Not shocked to hear the 62 and 9 are shutting down. Brendan is unhappy and has a family owned sponsor that will follow him anywhere he wants to go. They have been awful this year. Max is a great personality and a awesome sports car driver, but he just tears up so much equipment and hasnt progressed as much as he should.

If this series doesnt run common bodies (with different nose pieces) and crate motors soon, then this series is in deep ____. The cost to run this series competitively is unreal. This series would be awesome if costs were cut and the playing field was equal. I hate having common templates in the cup series and I cringe at the thought of the crew chief's box getting smaller, but this is what the Truck series, and probably the Nationwide series too, need. and go back to short tracks. This series needs to run Irwindale. It would be epic.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Gresham Motorsports Park would be a great addition. Maybe Gateway and Memphis (definitely Memphis) could get theirs back. The new ownership is up and running on both tracks, so the possibility is open. I know Moroso Motorsports was looking at 2013.

Charlie said...

I take racebuddy and frame the screen so I just see the truck. That way I don't have to see the chat.

Buschseries61 said...

Costs would not be an issue if chevy, ford, toyota, dodge got back into the series with a new push for selling efficient trucks. Gas guzzling trucks are not popular in this economy and not ideal for companies to advertise on.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, got to tow the boat with something!

Roadgeek Adam said...

Does Pikes Peak have SAFER Barriers in it? There's an open candidate if it does.

Roland said...

Irwindale, Gresham, Lucas Oil Raceway, dare I say Bowman Gray (probably not practical, but they did run the east series there this year and it was awesome)

Im totally out of it tonight. I have been on the computer the whole time and I couldnt tell you what has gone on so far in this race. No fault to the Speed crew, Im just easily distracted tonight

GinaV24 said...

Hi folks, sorry I'm late, I'm reading through the comments.

Adam, I like your style! Wreck the cup drivers so we can enjoy the race. I'll second that emotion.

Buschseries61 said...

Lol. True, JD. Just an idea. Adam, Pikes Peak had safer barriers in 2005, most likely still there.

Anonymous said...

How is a race a race with only 5 trucks on lead lap? Ls

Roadgeek Adam said...

Definitely Irwindale, now that they lost the All-Star-Showdown. Bowman Gray was on my eye.

Got Pikes Peak, Gresham, Memphis, Gateway, Evergreen, Portland, Hickory, and several others.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Add South Boston to that list. A lot of the tracks they dumped after 2000 are really open for possibilities.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon, kick the Cup guys out of NNS and truck if you want to see some guys really racing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

There are soooo many tracks where this series would put on a great show.

Run it with other NASCAR regional series and have a blast.

Buschseries61 said...

Adam, Id love Hickory, but I don't even think they have 36 pit stalls. I think the Busch series used to run 33 cars there.

Anonymous said...

I agree.....kick the cup guys out. So tired of the same ole show. Ls

Roadgeek Adam said...

Well if a couple teams are gone in 2012, that wouldn't matter. Also with start and parks, 36 can become 33 in a hurry.

It sucks that Wilkesboro is not open. Same for Mansfield and Jennerstown. Jennerstown would be fun if they could reopen.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Ray Dunlap win.

Bobby O said...

Thanks JD about the Race Buddy.

Another thought, surely you all have debated:

While watching the US Nationals, I had forgotten, but someone got penalized for oiling down the track!

How do you all feel about a similar rule in Nascar?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bobby, not going to happen in NASCAR. But, if they ever felt someone did that on purpose, they would be taking a seat for a while.

Tracy D said...

Cool shot of the Romeo? window.

Buschseries61 said...

Maybe even the Nashville Fairgrounds Adam. Now would be a great time to get their act together now that the big speedway finally crashed.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I've been keeping an eye on the updating story from the Reno Air Races.

Pilot crashed into some tables and seating areas on the tarmac. Went in nose down high speed. Got lots of folks injured and it looks like a good number have also been killed.

That event always had risk, but it was for the pilots. The planes don't race near the spectators. This happened as the planes were taking off for a new heat race.

Live video is on EmergencyStream.com and there are several videos of the incident at YouTube.

Pretty daggone awful!

Roadgeek Adam said...

Hard to say on the Fairgrounds, don't know if Karl Dean would want it. Unlike Rockingham, which has political support, the Fairgrounds has a problem.

If they'd do some upgrades, Texas World Speedway in College Station would be a great track.

Bobby O said...

JD

I guess what I mean is I've seen 1000 blown engines in Nascar. The drivers ALWAYS drive ALL the way around the track, down the pit lane, and into the garage, spreading oil everywhere.

The yellow for clean up lasts FOREVER!

In NHRA, get over as quickly as it is safe, or get penalized.

jerry said...

Nashville fairgrounds they are trying to get something together. Hamilton Jr. Running the joint now.

jerry said...

Yes, Adam, politics is the big problem.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Hamilton Jr, Marlin, Chad Little, you name it. The more names get in it, the more likely we could have money for a sanctioned race.

jerry said...

Curb has spent a lot of money out there already. Far as I'm concerned all they need is some safer barriers. The rest is good enough.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hey, sometimes changing things back to the way they were solves a lot of problems.

Might be that way with trucks. Liked them better as barnstormers spreading the NASCAR word at small tracks around the country.

Sally said...

Also, racing at smaller tracks with fewer seats, and without the diversion of the cup races might be the shot in the arm both series need. Find their own fan base again.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Well as tonight's discussion has pointed out, there's numerous possibilities.

Roland said...

On a broadcast note, I paid attention the last 50 laps or so. Really good broadcast. Mikey is mellow. Rick not yelling at everything like its the last lap. No technical issues. No missed restarts, no commercial overload, solid pit work. Not bad. Nothing really to complain about

Daly Planet Editor said...

Roland, it makes all the difference in the world when MW plays like a team member.

Roland said...

He can make or break a broadcast thats for sure. So can his brother.

Coming up next is Trackside...and Seinfeld reruns on my local Fox channel. Hmmmmm. I pick Seinfeld.

Charlie said...

Speed tells the story of the race as it happens.
And they do Wide camera shots.

Charlie said...

15 Laps to go.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Watching SPEED do trucks is just comfortable.

Buschseries61 said...

Happy to see Busch & Harvick ruin each others chance of victory.

Roland said...

Ty Dillon won the Arca race here in June. Austin wins tonight. Interesting sweep. Would have loved to see Piquet or Kligerman win, but awesome that a Cup driver didnt win. Lets see if he does the slide.

Roadgeek Adam said...

STEAL ONE FOR THE REGULARS :)

Buschseries61 said...

Dillon! Nice shot of the finish too!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Told Kyle almost put Kligerman in the wall, hope we get a replay.

Roland said...

Kyle was driving everybody dirty tonight. Running people down the track on the backstretch. Pinning trucks on the bottom to loosen them up. Show some respect man. This is their series, not yours.

GinaV24 said...

Nice job to see one of the regulars win it.

Roadgeek Adam said...

It'll be interesting seeing Austin in the NW Series and Ty in the trucks. I wish Richard would take Nelson and Ron's teams in those, but what can you do.

Buschseries61 said...

Let's see what version of Kyle we get to see. Humble owner or angry driver?

Roland said...

Austin will be bringing the #3 to the Nationwide Series next year BTW. Im cool with that, just not in the Cup series.

Sally said...

@Roland...you suddenly expect Kyle to show respect to these guys? Hey, they're keeping him ffrom getting to that '200 win' stat!

Roadgeek Adam said...

Anyway, been a pleasure, going to watch the post-race show. Won't be here tomorrow, will be in Williamsport PA tomorrow.

I will be here Sunday.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I can hardly wait to see Rusty on TV tomorrow. Dave Moody reporting MWR is taking 5 Hour Energy to Cup Series with Clint Bowyer and they are leaving Rusty's operation.

That's going to be a good topic!

Roland said...

@Sally haha good point.

Loving the Nelson Piquet interview "some speak more redneck than others".

Well people I enjoyed it. Broadcast was so good there was nothing really to complain about. Enjoyed the discussion on the health of the truck series. Epic points battle too.

Might see ya tomorow, might not. Tennessee vs Florida game is at the same time as the Nationwide race. Tennessee is my team and the Gators are my enemy. Might watch the game and record the race due to Espn's bottom line ticker.

It was fun guys. In the words of Marty Reid "Till we meet again"

Buschseries61 said...

I'll tell ya what, Rusty will be yapping his brains out.

Daly Planet Editor said...

See you guys tomorrow for the NNS race!

Very proud of Austin <3 Great win :)
